Q For the first time ih the history of H H S a girl, June Fowler, was selected as a drum majorette to serve with the others. We held two Mixed Dances this year instead of the usual one. The Hi-De Out furnished us with entertainment after the games. R'ans for the Senior Dance were made. It was held in October. The U S History Club sponsored three speakers this year, Elsa Maxwell, Archdike Otto of Austria, and Dr. Ruth Alexander, Quite a few of our seniors entered the services. and others graduated in the middle of the year. Many of us took the Army and Navy tests The Civil Air Patrol Cadets were organized for pre-iicuction courses in aviation Drives took place for paper, scrap. and bonds Surprise? Everyone took the exams' Oh' Our Senior one-act play was quite a hit Every senior bought a ticket The play was held during school time. It seems that cur life at H H S has ended before we got started, except for those final exams. Our class night turned out to be a fine success and most of us graduated. Our class had a big job in schod, but a greater one lies before us. Let's carry on! CLASS PROPHECY Dear Diary-Today is June l2, l9'55. We traveled back to the old home town just a year ago today. lt surely brought back memories to see the town where we had spent some of the best days of our life. As I remember we were met at the airport by Marna lber, Maria Cohn, and June Hall, who said that they would be our guides during our stay in Hamilton They were afraid we might get lost since the city had changed so much in the last decade. They took us first to the magnificent mansion of Betty Coggeshall who insisted that we stay with her. She told us that the plans for her mansion were made by Bill Van Wormer, a well known architect. She also informed us that she was having a welcom- ing party that evening for us. Among the first 'to arrive were Stella Wolfe, Mary Louise Hoerner, Bob Davis, Ted Wehr, and Charles Miller. Soon her house was filled with members of the class of '44, and tongues were busily wagging about the days back when .... Music was provided by Tommy Leach and his orchestra who had cancelled an engagement at the Paladium to be with us. Some of the members of his orchestra were Joe McFaIl, Bob Clark, Lawrence ln- loes, and George Mehas. Bob Jones, and Karl Hill were also there to enchant us with their singing. After everybody became warm dancing, we de- cided to go swimming in the moonlight. The class of '44 could still boast of having some bathing beau- ties. Definite proof of this was given by Donna Winn, Mary Llewellyn, Wanda Spradling, and Jean Edwards. lf it hadnt been for the heroic efforts of Butch Koehler, Ruth Gustin might have drowned. She al- ways did have trouble in deep water. The next morning we went to the business dis- trict to see whO was who. We met the mayor who was none other than our own Emery Ciill. He told us that he still went in for acting We found out that some of the other city officials were Ralph Wilson, Dick Koehler, Dick Martin and Frank Hamilton. After leaving Mayor Cill, we sauntered into one of the department stores. lt had twenty-five floors, which was twenty-one more than the four floors of the largest department store of ten years ago. Some of the pretty sales clerks were Evelyn Jones, Adele Hoerner, Thelma Schmerr, and Faye Church. Don Martin was the manager of the shoe department. It seemed so good to be able to buy all the shoes you wanted without a ration Stamp. On one of the floors we saw exquisite dresses modeled by Mary Adele Conradt, Rosemary Hepting, Lois Smith, and Barbara Hepke. The dresses were designed by Louise Rich- ardson, who is known the world over for her lovely creations. Helen McKenney was the head stenog- rapher and was in charge over Dorothy Dawson, Aileen Huston, Lois Uhl, and Elsie Woedl. At the time we were there, they were busily discussing a celebration in honor of Mr, and Mrs. Verlin Rose llillen Mc- Kenneyl who had been married nine years. When we were leaving the store, we bumped into Dick Wheelwright, who is now the football coach at Miami University. He told us- that Doc Long was now a famous doctor in New York City, and that Nick Jonson was basbetball coach at a nearby college. We then went down to see the new high school. As we started to go in, we saw George Beckett who had iust made arrangements with Bill Shulte, the principal, to show some pictures he had taken in South America. Walking down the halls, we saw Janet Owen, Thelma Skalley, and Martha C-ressel who were teachers. Louise Owen was faculty adviser of the school paper. . After eating lunch at a restaurant owned by Venus Jonson, we went to the theatre to see l Walk Alone which was based on a book written by Alberta Wells, While waiting for the show to start, we saw Dorothy Breinig, Helen Sommers, Margie Campbell and Mary Garrett. Mary told us that she was married and living in the country. Just as the lights were dimming, we saw Elva Schell, Marie Bruck, Lorraine Dutton and Norma Fisher rush to their seats. The show was very sad, but our gay mood came back when we saw Bugs Bunny in a comedy. He always was our favorite, In the newsreel, we saw one of Ohio's sen- ators, Braxton Tewart, who had just been in an auto- mobile accident. He was attended by his nurse, Roberta Kolodzik. - That evening we went to the banquet for the class of '44. We had a great time at our table talk- ing to Betty McCreary, June Acree, Ann Proeschel, Phyllis McKenzie and Ruby Couch. They told us that Faye Truster was a chorus girl in Cincinnati. At the dance after the banquet, we saw Eva Sexton, Ann Ziliox, Willie Owens, and June Fowler with men of their own choosing. We arose early the next morning since our plane was leaving at 8105. On the way to the air- port we saw lrma Smith, Bette House and Jeanne Galloway. Ah, yes, Dear Diary, the trip back to Hamilton made us all realize what a grand bunch of kids had been in the class of '44. Q f ' '?1' wum eq I ant. ozi l94l'42 Qfylsoupw Forty members compose the editorial and typing staffs and twenty-one members compose the business staff of the Weekly Review These students publish the weekly high school newspaper which has a circulation totaling thirteen hundred Advertisements are secured from the local merchants through the business staff each week Exchange papers with other high schools total approximately two hundred and fifty and the papers received are filed for reference This year approximately two hundred papers are mailed each week to graduates and former students in the armed forces Much appreciation has been expressed by the boys on their visits home on furlough. Quill and Scroll, an honorary society for high school iournalists, has a membership of thirteen persons from the staff of the Weekly Review including the editor of the Senior Issue . This chapter was named for C W. White, former superintendent of schools, and was organized in l939. Par King The Hamilton chapter of the National Forensic League was established in l939. Mem- bership is obtained in this organization by earning the required number of N.F.L. points while participating in various speech activities. This year the National Forensic League was awarded the Distinguished Service plaque. This plaque is given to chapters who have been particularly active in school and state speech contests. l-lamilton's chapter is the first chapter to receive this honor so early in its history. Each year a school wide speech contest is sponsored by this organization hoping to find new talent in the field of speech, lt has always been the aim of the NFL. to improve the speaking habits of students rather than win honors. l-lowever, this chapter has succeeded in doing both. Peggy Rice and Lois Lamb are the first juniors to receive the Degree of Distinction, the highest degree awarded, Bob Noes and Dorothy Orme qualified to attend the Ohio Speech League contest this year. Bob Noes qualified in extemporaneous speaking and Dorothy Orme in Original declarnation. In the past this chapter has been ably advised by Mr, John B. Holden who has recently been called into the service of his country, Needless to say, the chapter as well as the student body will miss hirn.
