Mann was the first to open her home in hospitality to the High School Senior Class of 1931, of which Miss Fay Hobdy is a member. About forty of her class were very happily entertained in her pleasant home on Friday evening, January 23. The guests were so cordial that all formality was left on the out- side as the young folks trooped into the cozy reception room. Games and contests led by the younz hostess and Miss Amy Wade aided and abetted by the whole class were enjoyed by all. This party will be one of the brightest of the happy memories treasured by the Hamilton High School Seniors of 1931. One of the merriest festivals of the schoo1's social calendar was the Hal1owe'en Party in which the Juniors so graciously entertained the Seniors on Hallowe'en night. The K. P. Hall, the scene of the joyful time, was decorated in the spirit of the night and was truly spooky enough for the most weird -- 2 - ' J ' 'mt F' --'-- . 'The hostess even overcame the Seniors mantles of dignity and all joined in for the jolly games that were played. Truly it was a night to be treasured in the memories of the Seniors who love 'Ole Hamilton High forever, as well as for the jolly Juniors. But there must be an end to all things, so after delicious refreshments were served, the guests departed, taking with them a pleasant memory of a joyous time. St. Valentine was elaborately represented when the Seniors of '30-'31 assembled at the home of Miss Lucy Helen Pigg on February 6, 1931. A very pleasing color scheme of red and White was effective- ly carried out, representing the Valentine motif. As the Seniors arrived they each registered and then all entered with that class spirit into a number of interesting games. All members present reported a swell time, and expressed that this party would be a happy Senior memory for long years to come. On account of St. Valentine's mighty grip over the Seniors, they again gathered at the home of Enid King on Friday night, February 13, to be entertained by Maurine Register, Ruth Risinger, and Enid King. After the guests had arrived and had registered in the Valentine Register, the games were started. Games, stunts, and contests were the diversions for the evening. While all were deeply interested in games, the hostess broke the fun to serve refreshments. After which other games were played and then they bade each other good night. Following this the Seniors had their annual party at the Perry Country Club House which was a gay meeting place for the Seniors of '30-31 on the night of March 13, when they were entertained by the social committee of the Senior Class. The radio furnished imusic while the guests entered into games of 42 , flinch, bridge, other card games, and a few ring games. The Saint Patrick Day motif was brought out in the refreshment course and the favors. 4 ....--.... ' 5 11' ff F DFI, G N?-?IQQlQ N'75i5l , JC- . -,L.- A . sr A w f ..-,. I . And Prentice Hendrix in our play takes a part, He really makes an ideal old-fashioned sweetheart. There's Sammy Harelik, the president of our class, He belongs to that noted Unholy Three, mass. And Loyd Hummert is also an Unholy Three member, An occasion last Christmas he's sure to remember. J. fT. Wren, a most studious Senior lad, is he, We have no idea what his future will be. Also Norman Thompson, who is interested in immigration, Perhaps he will some day be a leader of our nation. There's Herman Walton, whose speech is very rare, Of course he 'possess that high and mighty air, And James Billingsley, who is little but loud, They say he can be heard in any crowd. Then comes Edgar Williams, not the least, but last, He's a believer of the future and not of the past. The total of the girls is thirty-one, .A nd amid their work comes FUN. First comes Merle Ferguson our most masculine girl, She would not change her roudy ways for all the world. There's Velma. Gromatzky who a saxaphone can play, She'll surely be a professor of music some day. And Geraldine Durham has won her renown, By her winning smile for every one round. 'There's Ione Gardner who indulges in fun, If we were entering races. I'm sure that she would run. And Hazle Davis who loves a bl-ond as well, All the girls auite envy her, and she's a popular belle. Also Naona Livingston with her laughing eyes of brown, Wouldn't it be terrible if she should wear a frown? And Merle Whittenton, who pretends to be bashful and shy, But if you believe this you'll learn better by and by. Certainly Enid King would keep going to the drug store, Even though her mother told her never to go any more. There's Ruth Risinger, whom we all like to hear speak, tl at u'i'XM w..f-as at , 1-.ET ' L :J W , ' H l 'ff up 'ii' 11111-11. T, - - I s 74:5 48- f' ' 4 -sv v 1 4 1 ,.., ,Hx 5 bo 5 ., .M ,Nw . - A . Don't forget Pete Hawkins, w'ho's the life of her class Indeed she is a teaser, and a jolly little lass. Lucy Helen Pigg really might be called Miss Prim, But we'll have to admit, she's always neat and trim. And Freda Clayton, who likes all conversation, But ask her how she feels about Math. examinations. Marrrie Schwartz whose silence is just gold, But no Wonder, it's just this, her age she hasn't told. And there is Johnnie Petree, who is known by all, Of course she is fond of boys, whether they are large or small. Also Sarah Knorzer, whom her future has starred, We hope her prospects will never be marred. And Alma Hartin who's as studious as can be, She's striving to reach a goal, as we can all see. There's Myrtle Windham, with her starry eyes of blue, We hope her success, in what she undertakes to do. Also Margaret Collier who's little but loud, She believes the saying that two make a crowd. And Erna Clay Franks, a writer she hopes to be, And then there'll be good literature, as we can see. 'I'here's Maurine Register who really is precise, But she's a SENIOR, and of course we think she's wise. Loraine Munnerlyn with her fascinating eyes, And really her smiles should win the prize. And Edith Pitts of study she has no fear, Some time her education will be a treasure dear. There's Zuba Agee with her curly hair, She doesn't like to study she does declare. And Hazel Richerson who considers Math. a pleasure. This subject in the future may prove to her a treasure Sara Nell Embry whose tricks are so rude, It would be impossible for her to be good. And Mildred Smith the campus round-about, Of her frequent car rides we are in doubt. There's Maxine Huddleston our librarian clever, She is always courteous and gives us service ever. And Gayle Hendrix, who likes English so well, She says that she could master this if she' could only spell. There's Maxine Durham, who likes to keep in style, Although she keeps on studying all the while. And Faye Hobdy, one who likes all books, She has at last found her favorite reading book. Ruth Hibits an intellectual Senior lass, She concludes the list of our '30-'31 Senior Class. -Dedicated to my Senior Class and our sponsor, Miss Urcy Cook. FREDA CLAYTON, Class Poet. Aw ,t -me . :qv , , ,, JUNIGR CLASS HISTORY lMavis Higdonj When there's any school activity in progress-watch the Juniors forge ahead, The Junior class of 1930-'31 is one of the most progressive classes in school and looking over their memoranda we find that out of 47 students, six are in the Orchestra, four in the Lions' Club and, ten are in the Glee Club, six were on thc football squad, three are on the Pioneer Staff, twelve were in the Pep Squad and Russell Fuqua was elected the most popular boy in Hamilton Hirh School. Are the Juniors speedy? And how! Many of the students started out together in the grade schools, and united i11 the seventh grade in one jolly band, forgetting the old enmity between East Ward and West Ward. Officers for this year are: Loraine VVhite, tpresidentg Daphine Pointer, vice- presidentg Amye Oglesby, secretary-treasurerg Louise Pierson, Chairman of the Social Committee. The Juniors believe in the fact that all work and no play makes students dull company, and they set the example of mixing social activities with studying. Their social calender, which we do not. have room to print here, was full of picnics, weiner roasts, parties and other happy carousals. Let the Seniors boast of their dignity, their superiority of underclassmen, speak of their intelligence and stately mien-but after the Junior class of this year has passed on, others will say: That was a live class, always progressive and active, jolly and friendly, and greatest of all they were good sports. YVe have entered into every contest and school activity with the right spirit, and have been very successful. We have boasted many athletes. John Payton Williams, one of the most popular boys in high school, made the first team in football, and showed some of the upper classmen in the lineup how interference should be run. Pewee Jones, another soph, was student manager of the football club. Gordon Toby Gipson, Otis Grant and Ernest Grimm also worked for the squad, and Will be valuable men hater on. During the County Interscholastic League Meet many Sopho- mores competed. Nellie Eidson played doubles in tennis, Joe Garnett Walton won first 'place in Senior Boys' Declamation, Clarice Lawson and Obera Richey took first place in Junior Spelling. The Sophomoes could not be left out of the high school orchestra, as we have more members than any other class. 'They are: Obera Richey, Nellie Eidson, Patty Logan Gerald, Margaret Davis, Eldon Jones, J. H, Smith, Louis Harelik, and Quinn Rounsaville. Almost all the girls were in the Pep Squad, and they were very loyal members. We believe in having our fun, too. On Friday, April 3, we had a picnic at the American Legion Park. It was a very enjoyable affair, with Mrs. Sullivfan, our sponsor, in charge. The Sophomoes beat every other class in school when they won the half-holidway for selling the most tickets. to a play directed by Mrs. Bentley and Mrs. Sullivan for the benefit of the piano fund. She Sophomores have also had the saddest event of the year happen to a member of the class, when M. R. Ballou died. He was one of the most beloved and most popular members of the class. If you do not believe We Have the Stuff just watch us as Juniors next year. -ff, 4 ,mr H LKSXA' .s-. S, 'fi ff- f' tml? vis is . .. ' 'J A ..,., ' Ag ' : ' Q MX Tl, 47+ -- 'i' ,-N ' N-E- IZ: A-H f ,. Altogether some 4000 pennies were dropped in the ballot boxes. Each class selected by popular vote a boy and a girl to enter in the contest for the most popular boy and most popular girl in the entire high school. Each pair of class candidates had campaign managers from their own home room. This system resulted in some warm political speeches being delivered in chapel and elsewhere. The Seventh Grade candidates were Mary Sabrina McKelvain and George McCoy. They were managed by Stella Jane Rounsaville and Vincent Wieser. The Eighth Grade, or Fish ran Ruth Miller and Presley Pep Atkinson. They were managed by Paul Claunch and Ruth Pirtle. T-he Sophs entered Genieve King and John Payton Williams, under the management of Nellie Eidson and Eldon Pewee Jones. The Juniors ran Louise Pierson and Russel Fuqua. These two candidates were managed by Andrew Craig and lsmael Pirtle. The Senior Class entered Enid King and Sammy Harelik. Geraldine Durham and Charles Lemmons managed them. The four candidates who survived the primary race were: Enid King, Sammy Harelik, Russell Fuqua and Mary Sabrina McKelvain. In the final run-off Enid and Russell won. ...f':5.-- 3 5 ....,,. Ann Wi: New- ,, PEP SQUAD On Friday, September 12, 1930 the Pep Squad was organized for another year's work in Hamilton High. There was enthusiasm shown not only at the first meeting, but also at every meeting held during the year. The first meeting was held for the purpose of elect- ing leaders and officers. Pete Hawkins was elected Pep Squad lead- er and Geralding Durham assistant. The following officers were elected: President,Pete Hawkinsg vice-president, Geraldine Durhamg secretary-treasurer, Johnnie Petreeg chairman of social committee, Hazel Davis, Enid King and Louise Pierson. The Pep Squad under the able direction of Mrs, Sullivan had the most successful year in its history. Great loyalty was shown the school, and the football boys. The Pep Squad was always on the sidelines cheering our boys on to victory. Many stunts were per- formed by the Pep Squad this year, and it gave the spectators a thrill to see those seventy boys and girls ready to do their part. Entertainments were given at various times by the Squad for the football boys, but probably the best was given by the football boys themselves when they entertained the Pep Squad with an old- fashioned souping. It is the wish of all the members of the Squad who wil not be here next year that those left behind carry on and make next year the best in the history of Ol' Hamilton High. They have been organized since September 19, 1930. and have been having jolly times ever since. Even two of the members, the honorable sponsor and a dignified senior, Bum Williams, were to lessen their titles to become Jolly Juniors once more. Not ony has the club been entertaining, but also educational. There were numerous jokes cracked and Kangaroo courts heldg programs of art, poetry, authors, and many other interesting subjects. The club members were sorry to have Leota Newton and Bum Williams drop out at mid-term but were rerpaid by the arrival of J. C. Wade. Otherwise the club has remained intact. Fuqua CAPTAINS The elections of captains for athletic teams in Hamilton High School is a great deal different from the usual custom in high schools. Each season begins without a captain. On the day of each game the coach appoints a man to act as captain for that contest only. In this way various men receive the honor of act- ing captain. and every man on the club works hard to win that distinction. Then, at the conclusion of the season the club meets and chooses by popular vote the boy among the letter-men who they think has been most deserving of the captaincy. This means that a boy must deliver the goods before he can be captain of a team in Hamilton High. Mere popularity is not enough. Charles Lemmons, pictured above, was captain of both foot- ball and basketball. This was an unusual distinction, and the winner of it deserves more credit than should usually be bestowed on a high school captain, W. N. Fuqua, the other lad pictured on this page, was selected by his team mates as track captain. He lettered in football at end, basketball at forward, and ini track as a 440 yard dash man. He was an outstanding performer in all three sports. 15552.53 -is f to ... . l e f jg ' 4 ' 4-A V 'A'tlt d fiiiiifgl ,, X I -t 'iam 'T1'A4'- Ht - l--a': wX-'-J-- f 1' il e--f 1 '-'B . a s - ...W . .. He was one of the outstanding guards for two years, 'but he was shifted to the center the third year. In this new position Steve made good and was probably the best offensive center and line backer in this district. LYNDON SARGENT 175, Fullback This was Sarg's last year to play for the Bulldogs. He played fullback on the offensive and backed up the line on the defense. He covered the enf tire field when in action and was working all the time, He made not only the allfdistrict team but also the State Honor Roll as well, Sargent could be depended upon to gain ground when it was needed and could stop the other team from gaining. SAMMIE HARELIK 1.20, Quarter Sam came out for football last year and was a good second team man. When training stat- ed in the fall, Sam was right there. He started out playing halfback, but before the season was over he was one of the outstanding quarterbacks of the district. PRENTICE HENDRIX 1 80, Tackle Hendix had never been in a fooball uniform until this seas on, but before the season was over he made a man's size showing in the eyes of every coach of this part of the state. If Hendrix had one more year to play for the Bulldogs, he would put himself on the all- district team. CHARLES LEMMONS, Captain 205, Tackle Hoochie, the big captain, was the daddy of the team. He had that valuable, rare knack of instilling confidence and fight in those whom he led, His physical power, coupled with his personality, made him one of the best linemen and most valuable players that H. H. S. has ever boaster. He finishes this year. May we find more like him. PAUL WEST 1 5 0 , End Paul is known as the dash ing end , but was shifted to quarterback. Paul's leadership as quarterback brought the Bulldogs to victory over several teams at the first of the season, but Paul was shifted back to the end position at the last of the football season. JOHN PAYTON WILLIAMS 135, Halfback Payton lettered his first year this football season, but it was his third years to suit for football. Payton,' played a halfback position and was one of best interference runners that has played for the Bull- dogs in several years. He has a bright football future. Watch him! w. N. FUQUA 145, End Tince played his first year for the Bulldogs this season, but he made it a good one. Tince is a good natured boy but aggressive, cut out to be an end. He is fast and has all the qualifications of a good player. Hustle is his middle name. f'5 'I' stills? are -as . ssl f--. ,Aa 1 sf-N-fat ' - 1 -1 ...... .. Bogus was shifted to the guard position this year where he made his letter. He is a good natured, hardgfighting boy and the Bull. dogs are sorry that this is his last year to play on the team. EDBEN SIKES 160, Half Son lettered his first time this year with the Bulldogs. His good punting and passing, along with his line 'plunging ability, made him a valuable man on the team. Son has another year of football and we hope he will be able to play for Hamilton. BERTICE BALLARD 1 9 5, Guard Although Ballard came in from the country and did not know much about football, he fought hard enough to letter. In every game he played hard. Ballard fought hard and hever gave up. This is his first and last year for the Bulldogs. VESTER NEWTON 160, Guard Vester's first year with Ham. ilton, but he showed what he was made of 'by his hard fight. ing. He started the season at guard and his fighting spirit kept him there. Newton always had his side of the line on its toes and ready to go. This was also his last year to be with the Bulldogs, f'-Dr-f fs KH 'E LaVERNE PATTERSON 2 0 4, Guard Zschiesche, after one year's absence from the team. returned to his position as a guard, and became one of the mainstays of the team. His hard fighting often encouraged the team to try harder. This was his last year, and it will be hard to fill his position. IRVEN JONES 150, Half Irvin is one of the few men who will be with us another season. He was held back this season from his best by an in- jured ankle. He is expected to lead the backfield next season. ROBERT HILL 160, End Hill entered his second and last year for the Bulldogs, and emerged as a victor in the vic- tories. He came in last year as a gre-enhorn and rapidly be- came a valuable man. He play. ed end last year but did a great deal of 'punting this year. They set a precedent by defeating Comanche for the first time in the history of the two schools, and defeating Gatesville for the first time in seven years. Most of the starting lineup graduates this year, but several good reserves and letter men will return to play another season. fr If The past season's schedule and results of games follows: September 19 September 27 October October October October October November 11 November 21 November 27 3 11 24111 11 31 af W ,N-R. 10 11 17111111 62:1 1.42 1 Desdemona vs. Hamilton 11 Daniel Baker vs. Hamilton 11 Goldthwaite vs. Hamilton111 111110-25 1111 110--0 1 .11 16-19 ,Comanche vs. Hamilton 1111 1111 6-13 1 Hamilton vs. Dublin-.- 11 1-0 Forfeit 11Hamilton vs. Stephenville-111111110-26 Gorman vs, Hamilton 11 11 1111 0-7 1 1 111 Hamilton vs Gatesville 11111111 14-7 Hamilton vs. DeLeon 111111111 6-13 Hamilton vs. Strawn 1 11111 111132-0 'IS ---s, 1. , il Hz H W 4 H 'af f r-- V 14... . With only ten men working out, no two of which had ever played together before, they Won the Hamilton County Championship for Senior boys and defeated most of the other quintets they met. Due to football the boys did not begin working out until after Thanksgiving Day. They ,practiced a little from that time until Christmas, and took up basketball in earnest on the second day of January. They developed fast, being in good physical condition, and started playing practice glames early. The height of their playing season was reached when they defeated Gustine in the John Tarleton Gymnasium by a score of 22 to 12. The Gustine boys had just wfon the Daniel Baker Invitation Tournament. +They then entered the district meet 'at Brownwood and drew May, one of the strongest contenders for their first opponent. They put up a stiff fight but lost to the May Boys by four points. In the County Meet. thed defeated Gentrys Mill, 31 to 85 Mt. View, 23 to 9, Carlton, 25 to 21, and Indian Giap, 25 to 15, in rapid succession to 'win the cham- pionship. Incidentally they defeated Comanche by a score of 27 to 13. The five outstanding men were: Lemmons, Sargent, Fuqua, Ballard and Hill. Hurley, Riley, Newton, B. Hurley, and Schrank kept them working hard for their positions. They then entered the district meet at Brownwood and won two second places and twon thirds. Ballard started the day by placing second in the pole vault. Sargent placed second in the 440 yard dash. In the one mile relay Fuqua started, Ballard ran second, Hill third and Sargent anchored to win third flace. Ballard and Sargent ran unusually good fraces in this event. In the same event at the county meeting Fuqua and Hill ran fast heats. Among the Juniors John Morgan looked best in the county meeting. Ballard and Sargent qualified for the state meet, but this book was printed too early to give the results of their work there.
