AMERICAN LEGION ORATORICAL CONTEST On February 9, 1939, tSiore v;as a contest held in the school auditorium under the auspices of the American Legion. Primarily, eight entrants were selected to write a theme on .Americanism, and from these, four were chosen. They were Eleanor Thor.ipson and Thomas I ' illerick of the senior class and Jane Pei’kins arid Edward J ' allace, juniors , The first prize, a silver medal, was awarded to Jane Perkins, and Eleanor Ttacmpson received a bronze medal, as second p lze. V hile the jud es were in conferexice, a movie entitled The Decla - o f Independence was enjoyed. T ' ' is contest is a pro ' ; ' ressive one, and on March 9th, Miss Perkins represented Hamilton Hi ' h at the Essex County contest, held in Peabody. Francis Barry, a junior frora Lynn Classical Eiph School and l.iss Perkins tied foi fli ' ’st place, Iiaiing received the ssne num- ber of points. On Monday, March El, the third elimination was held in Lowell. The winner vi as Francis Berry vTio represented Essex and Iliddlesex Counties at the State Contes c in V ateraown on March sSth. AMERICAN FOREi ' SIC LEAC- ' JE CONT rpme: rp The American Forensic Leauge held its annual public speaking contest on liiesday, March 14, at Gloucester. The diistrict to which Hamilton belongs v as represented by four speakers-- tv o boys from Lo ;ell High and tv o girls froi.. Gloucester High. Cambridge Latin High was to have sent candidiatcs; but, because of the storm, they were unable to be present and so ' ithdrew from the contest. Jmss Jane Perkins v;as our liai.ilton representative in the original oratory division. Her essay was EAdvanta ' es; of a Be: ocracy . Miss Perkins did an excellent piece of v ork, in fact, so excel-, lent that she v on suh ' icienb xeoints to be placed first smong the speakers in the divisien which she entered.
