Plan at the Constitutional Convention . . . our state was the third to ratify the Federal Constitution and first to ratify the Bill of Rights . . . beneath the Palisades near Weehawken, Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton fought their famous duel . . . Sam- uel F. B. Morse and Alfred Vail tapped out the first telegraph message near Morris- town in 1838 . . . Thomas Edison invented the incandescent electric lamp at Menlo Park . . . our state was the first to supply the ori- ginal inhabitants of America with a reser- vation . . . the first Colonial Bank was es- tablished in New Jersey in 1688 . . . the well known writer James Fenimore Cooper was born in Burlington . . . New Jersey advocat- ed Thanksgiving as a national holiday in 1789 . . . Woodrow Wilson, our 28th presi- dent, was born in New Jersey . . . citizen John Holland in 1881 launched the first suc- cessful submarine in the Passaic River . . .
