The team showed improvement with each game, never gave up, and showed promise for a good season in 1981. The highlight of the season was the only win: a thrilling 7-6 victory over Cooperstown. Ten seconds were left in the game with Hamilton leading 7-0 when Coopers- town quarterback Rich Busse rolled back and threw a long pass deep into the end zone where it was caught for six points. Cooperstown went for the two-point conversion. At the snap of the ball, a host of grren shirts barrelled through the line like lightning to break up the pitchback. The ball rolled toward the goal and was picked up by Coopers town1s fullback. He was smothered by several Emerald tacklers. Hamilton had won! Hamilton placed three players on the 1980 Center State Conference All-Star team. Tom Nolan was named all-star linebacker. Mark Crumb was an all-star selection as linebacker. Tim Meier was the league's all-star punter. Named to honorable mention were: Mark Dobens, Bill Stratton, and Mark Fenner. Row 1: A. Balmuth, A. Kemp, S. Purdy, P. Vantine, D. Crumb. Row 2: A. Mo.a 72 The 1980 Field Hockey season was filled with excitement and disappointment. Each team improved with experience, especiallythe Varsity team. Only 11 girls participated on the Varsity throughout the season which presented difficulties at the outset but eventually was converted into an advantage. Elected to the Center State Con- ference All Star Team was senior Lynda Julian. All of the seniors on the team provided much desire to win and will be missed by their teammates and coach next season. Hamilton finished 5th in the league with a 3-4-0 record. A moment to remember during the season was the big win over Coopers town who eventually won the Sec- tional title. This established the quality of field hockey that Hamilton has achieved, and will provide a basis for further improvement next year. Kackd.il Lynda K My 73 74 Row 1: L. Humphreys, D. Wright. Led by Coach Andrews, the team ran off with a total of seven wins, while suffering only two defeats. The team also placed third in the sectionals. The highlight of the season was sophomore Robyn Benson's performance. She qualified for the State Championship race held at Long Island. Running in the Girl's C Division, she finished third in her section and in the mid-forties in the entire meet. Other seasonal highpoints were Eric Wunderlich's daring attempt at leaping an eight-foot fence at Oriskany, Tim Ross' experimenations on shoeless racing, and Ben Kuiper's encore performance at the Spa. Honorable mention goes to Carl Gronlund's Saturday morning smile and to all those great voices that helped make the singing on the homebound bus rides a memorable experience for the departing seniors. The Emeralds finished the season at 6-11, losing four one-run contests and a pair of two-run games. A strong returning nucleus adds promise for the upcoming circuit. Jay Stauffer, playing for the first time, went the entire season at first base without committing an error. Jay hit over .300, and was helped by timely hitting from Dennis Kiely and Bill Stratton. Tony Aveni added some defensive help late in the season. Row 1: T. Rider, J. Maxim, S. Gronlund, M. Kemp, P. Craven, M. Sacco. Row 2: M. Woltman, C. Ammon, S. Purdy, J. Brustad, J. York, B. Misch, P. Victor Hou, the lone senior on this year's team, had an overall record of 10-2, and part- nered with Casey Noble, was named to the League All Star team at the first doubles position last season. Their most im- pressive victory was over undefeated league champs Mt. Markham by a score of 4-3. The enthusiasm of the team gave Hamilton third place in the league; how- ever, it wasn't enough for a sectional berth. The 1981 season has high hopes for the softball team. The team didn't lose a single senior from the 1980 season. Returning seniors are: manager - Jocelyn Gibson, Kachie Wise, Anne Mitchell, Kelly Kwiatkowski, Holly Hollingsworth, and Center State Conference All Star Lynda Julian. 84 Kim Kaclviz Lynda Anne. 85 Row 1: J. tenHope, D. They achieved second place by defeating a tough Mt. Markham squad in the last match of the season with a close score of 175-180. Although the boys' team tied for sixth place in the Center State Conference Championships, individual records were continually being set, broken, and bettered. Jim Collins continued to improve, in the 3200 meters, attaining his best time at the Championships. Eric Martel not only sealed 20' % in the long jump, but also achieved a golden height of 6' 2 , breaking the old Championship meet record by V. The girls were not to be outdone. They have lost four games by a two goal margin. Senior goalie Tom Craven has been a standout in the nets since rebounding off a football injury. Senior center Jay Stauffer broke the school record for career goals with 64 midway through the season.
