FOOTBALL On September 1, about forty football hopefuls reported for the first practice. The majority of these were freshmen, sophomores, and first year men. The inexperience of this team was evident in their opener with Sherburne. The Emeralds lost 21-0, but they gained valuable experience which helped them to defeat Central Square and Waterville. The next opponent for the Hamilton eleven was the powerful N. Y. Mills Marauders. Although the Emeralds were completely out-manned, they refused to give up, scored on a sustained drive in the second half, and gave the opposition a run for its money. The game wjth Clinton was a real heartbreaker. The Emeralds rolled up more than 20 first downs, while holding Clinton to only five. However, the Emeralds could put together only one scoring drive and with seconds remaining in the game the teams were deadlocked at a 6-6 tie. Recovering a fumble on the 19 yard line, Clinton kicked the first field goal in Center State Conference history to win 9-6. After a scoreless first half, Richfield Springs proved too much for the Greenies and they went down in defeat, 20-0. However, with characteristic determination, they rebounded and defeated West Winfield and Sauquoit. finishing the season with a 4-4 record. The outstanding coaching of Mr. Walter Moore and Mr. David McKay, backed up by the spirit and determination of the team, made the season a memorable one for all. -70- Coaches Moore and McKay THE RECORD Hami lton 0 Sherburne Hamilton 19 Central Sq. Coach Mlasgar VARSITY BASKETBALL The Emerald Cagers, under the fine coaching of Mr. Mlasgar, completed another successful year. With Dick Moore and Bob Holmes the only players returning from last year, the team lacked experience, but it was seldom evident. The Greenies showed great determination and a strong desire to win. Much of the team's success was due to the fine shooting of Blake Lamb, Harry Brown, Bob Holmes, and Rich Jones, and the aggressiveness of Dick Moore. Pete Feitsma, Bruce Dewey, Steve Jones, Dan Davey, and Chris Lynch also played a great deal and the strong depth which the team had, brought home many of the victories. Co-captains Pete Feitsma and Dick Moore were the only seniors on the team. Therefore, with the valuable experience obtained this year, and under the excellent coaching of Mr. Mlasgar, the Hamilton Emeralds should boast an eighth straight winning season for the coming year. However, lack of experience and heighth became an evident factor in the defeats the Junior Varsity had scattered through- out the rest of the season. The scoring of Gary Williams, Mike Hickey and Royce Birch, the rebounding of George Brustad and Alan Thayer, and the playmaking of Rick Capirci and Dave Berkey were all high-lights of the season.
