VValter Moore, Hamilton's new coach, greeted thirty-three young football hopefuls at the initial practice for the 1954- version of Hamilton grid forces. In his first year as head coach, Mr. Moore was faced with the unenviable task of finding replacements for thirteen graduated veterans, a greater number of them linemen. Returning was last year's stellar hackfield, comprised of Bob Ripley, Bob Karpp, Tom Fitzpatrick, and Tony Amendola, but the only linemen left with any appreciable game-experience were: Sam Giordano and Brian Vlialsh. During pre-season practice coach Moore and his assistants, Mr. Wheeler and Mr. Sorochinsky, worked hard to mold the team into a cohesive unit. As the opener with Y. Y. S. approached their efforts were beginning to bear fruit. Un the night of September 24, the Emeralds entertained an experienced V. Y. S. team on the Kendrick Avenue field. The inex- perienced Hamilton line made several costly mistakes on which an alert Y. Y. S. team capitalized to score three touchdowns while holding Hamilton to two, the final score was '20-13. Early in the game rugged Emerald halfbaek 'l'om Fitzpatrick suffered a dislocated shoulder and was lost to the team for three weeks. The following week, the Greenies journeyed to Canastota to play Pinky Schmidt's rugged Canas- totans. Throughout the game Hamilton experienced great difficulty in penetrating the flanastotans de- fenses while Canastota ran the middle of the Emerald line almost at will. Midway through the first quarter Hamilton scored its first and only touchdown with Dick Breitenstein going Q3 yards on a naked reverse for the tally. Bleanwhile Vanastota scored four touch- downs to win 96-6. The next week Hamilton was back on home grounds again to meet the always powerful Redmen of Oneida. It was in this game that the Greenies gave their fans their first glimpse of the fine football they were destined to play in the next three games. t'p against a heavier, more experienced Oneida squad the Emeralds put up a courageous fight but succumbed in ARSITY FOOTB LL l ir.vt Row: Whitney, Breitenstein, Kinney, Lambert, Briggs, Duheme, Evans, Fowler, Stradling, Mitchell, Grems, Case, Dahn. Hamilton was a win hungry ball club as they traveled to Chittenango the next week and beforethe afternoon was over Hamilton had chalked up its first win. Going through. around and over f'hittenango's defenses the Emerald line broke Tony Amendola loose for four touchdowns and Bob Ripley for two to win 40-13. The next game found Hamilton entertaining a strong Clinton team at the Kendrick Avenue field. In recent years the llamilton-Vlinton game has developed into quite a bitter rivalry and this year's game was no exception. In a seesaw offensive battle which saw the lead change hands three times, Bob Karpp hit Dave ltlorgan with a long touchdown pass in the closing minutes of the game which gave Hamilton a 38-31 win. The last game of the year found Hamilton meeting lea-gue leading Cazenovia. From the kickoff to the final whistle Hamilton's supremacy was never in doubt. The Emerald line opened gaping holes again and again for Bob Ripley and Tony Amendola to run through and the Emerald defenses bolstered by the return of Tom Fitzpatrick and Sam Giordano almost completely stopped the Cazenovia attack. The hnal score was 38- 90 in Hamilton's favor with Bob Ripley scoring four touchdowns as he rounded out his illustrious career in a brilliant fashion. Much credit for Hamilton's fine late season surge must be given to the coaches Mr. Moore, Mr. Sorochinsky, and Mr. Wheeler, who kept the spirit of the team going week after week. Next year you can look for another fine Emerald team for although Bob Ripley, Tony Amendola, Tom Fitzpatrick, Bob Karpp, Bill Briggs, Sam Giordano, Gary Grems, Walter Jaquay, Sam Stradling, Trent Evans, and John Bartlett are lost through graduationg Dick Breitenstein, Bob Kinney, Conard Dahn, Tom Rausa, Pete Koenig, Jim Getchonis, Dave lNlorgan,Fred Whitney, Gordon Duheme and Brian Walsh are return- ing to keep the coaches happy. ef' I A ' if . t 1 '35 1 . - at .1 Syl gafte-aff? 5 if in -f ' ' . . V RSITY B This is a year of rebuilding for the Varsity basket- ball team under its new coach, Walter Moore. Tom Fitzpatrick and Bob Karpp are the only men with sub- stantial varsity playing-experience. Sid Smith, Gary Grems. and Sam Stradling were also varsity men last year, with Brian lYalsh, Jim Mitchell, Dick Breiten- stein, Tom liausa, and Dave Morgan. moving up from the JY squad. Dex Vhaphe and John Bartlett round out the relatively green team, The season opened with a big disappointment as we lost to Vlinton, -1-Q-Q5. Although the game was reasonably close until the final minute, when Vlinton broke away to a big lead, the team, as shown by the statistics, was really off. Tom Hausa was high scorer for the losers, with 8 points. The next night was no improvement over the first game. A very good Norwich team tramped over our team, 74-46 in a game in which we were thoroughly out-played. Dick lireitenstein was top man with 11 points. Things began to look up as the team returned to league competition. Although Oneida won 65-51, it was a much more tightly-fought contest all the way. The loss was due to too much fowling by Hamilton and to 0neida's sleeper fast break which constantly beat our boys down the ftoor. Tom Hausa became the first man to score Q0 points and Bob Karpp had 12. The next game resulted in a convincing victory over a weak lvaterville team. By a 61-44 score, the boys romped home in a game in which the whole team got a good chance to play. Rausa had a great night with 20 points in the first half. KETB LL The Chittenango game was the most disappointing game yet, because of the manner of losing. With the score tied 51-51 and about ten seconds left in the game, a Chittenango dribbler broke away and sank a crazy layup. A technical foul added another point making the final score 54-51. Karpp had 21 points for the losing cause. Vanastota proved a good contest in the team's first outing after the holidays. Although handling the ball well and close behind all the way, llamilton lost by 8 points, 62-54, on the huge court which exhausted everyone. The Sherburne game gave the team a huge lift. Playing at Sherburnc-'s small home court, where they have been almost invincible in recent years, Hamil- ton found just enough holes in the opposition's zone defense to eke out a 59-56 victory. Jim Getchonis up from the JY's for this one game, put it on ice with a jump shot in the final minute. Rausa and Karpp led the great team effort with 17 points apiece. The Vazenovia game which followed was a big letdown. The f'az-men were really sharp and rebound- ed excellently in their 63-44 triumph. Hausa and Karpp each pitched in 12 points. The team has now nearly concluded the first half of its season with the not very imposing record of two wins and six losses, but the surprising thing about them is that they went on to defeat V.V.S., who was tied for third place. Nice going boys. The boys have all been improving steadily but each team we meet seems better than the last. Not so for V. V. S. First Row: Randall, Hadley, Soule, Srour, Mitchell, Rockafellow, Hartshome. Second Row: Moon, O'Hora, Dahn, Matteson, Getchonis, Sny- der, Morgan, Coach Wheeler. Abserd: Kranz. J.V. BASKETBALL Under the guidance of our new coach, Mr. Richard Wheeler, the following returnees from last year's J. V. squad, Jim Getchonis, DeVVitt Randall, Fonard Dahn, and W'ade Rockafellow, along with this year's new- comers Hopp Hadley, Gary Mattison, Bill Mitchell, George Srour, Johnathan Hartshorn, Dave Kranz, Lanny Snyder, Scott Morgan, and Jay Soule, were whipped into fine shape for their first encounter. Clinton presented a fine opener as we beat them 45-28. Jim Getchonis dunked 17 poirits while Conard Dahn made 10. As usual, when we journeyed to Norwich, we met an extremely strong team and lost. 51-39. Jim Getchon- is led the losers with 15 points. The following week at Oneida we won a thriller by the score of 48-45. Again leading the scorers was Jim Getchonis with 17 points, followed by Gary Matti- son with 14 points and DeVVitt Randall with 10. The next two weeks presented fairly easy victories against YVaterville and flhittenango. Respectively these were 51-41 and 46-31. Jim Getchonis led all scorers with 16 points in each game. Canastota was our first encounter after the long Christmas holidays. VVith a poor showing Hamilton lost 50-37. Getchonis and lilattison each had 8 points for the losers. An undefeated Sherhurne team presented us with our first non-league game since Norwich. After a tight first half the Sherburne squad began to pull away and won decisively 49-34. Jim Getchonis led the Hamilton team with 12 points. Back in the league, anotncr undefeated team, Cazenovia, was next to be contended with. A slow first half put the damper on our chances of victory and we lost 44-29. George Srour hooped 10 points to lead the Hamilton scorers. With another chance at every team in the league we hope to end up with a very successful season. First Row: Coach Sandwick, Fitchen, Amenflola, Grems, Hausa, Benson, Coat-h Moore.
