Gardner Following a vigorous campaign, culminating in speeches by the twenty-two nominees, the eleven mem- bers of the Student Council were elected by the student body. Those chosen were Nancy Dunham from the seventh and eighth grades, Conard Dahn from the Freshman Class, Susan Schapiro and Leigh Fitchen from the Sophomore Class, Carol Nelson, Tony Amen- dola, and Tom Fitzpatrick from the Junior Class, and Susan Storing, Allen Fitchen, Larry Griffin, and Dietz Kessler from the Senior Class. During Dietz's tem- porary absence from school, Celia Hoben was elected by the Senior Class to sit in his place. Larry Griffin was chosen President, Susan Storing, V ice-President: Carol Nelson, Secretary, and Tom Fitzpatrick, Treas- urer. The advisors are Miss Gardner and Mr. Vogel. The Student Council has been very busy this year. We joined the National Association of Student Coun- cils. 'TUBE T CUU CIL Individual pictures, sponsored by the Student Council, were taken of the entire student body by the Vantine Studios to finance Seniors on the U. N. trip to New York. Student Association tickets, with pictures on them, were sold to almost one hundred percent of the students. Several assemblies have been sponsored and organized by the Student Council. Among the most outstanding were the Christmas assembly and a pro- gram concerning the seeing-eye dog and the blind given by George McDermott. The Council held one dance before Christmas and sponsored another near the end of the school year. In January a very successful bake auction was held, the profits going to the polio fund. The Student Council would like to take this op- portunity to thank the student body for its wonderful cooperation with the Council and its recommendations throughout the year. J. Rathbone, S. 'l'he llamilton llonor Society is an inactive organi- zation whose members retain their membership after graduation. Students eligible for this Society in their Junior and Senior years in high school are chosen by a committee made up of faculty members. Starting in l95-l-, two initiations will be held each year. HU Ull 'UCIETY Margaret Heffernan Four basic factors are important in the judging for new members. These are scholarship. leadership, character. and service. Students chosen as members of this society in 1953 from the class of 1954 were Allen Fitclien, Dietrich Kessler, and John Rathbone. Advisors of the Society are Miss Inez Vook and Miss Margaret lleffernan. Achieving ent rance into this Society is such a great honor that it promotes better standards in our school life. -U . Rloore and Mr. Sandwick, football coaches, turned out a team which earned a five and two season record. The Emeralds finished the season in a tie for second place, behind massive New Hartford. In the opening game, Hamilton's gridders tackled Canastota, always a tough team to beat. Hamilton scored first on a pass from quarterback Bob Karpp, a junior, to end Dick Loop. The conversion attempt failed. Later in the first half Canastota scored a touchdown, but also missed in their try for the extra point. Then in the third period Dick Benson recovered a Canastota fumble to score Hamilton's last points. In the last part of the game, the Hamilton line held firm on its own one-foot line. Shortly after Canastota scored a safety, making the final score 12-8 in favor of Hamilton. At Oneida the Hamilton cause seemed to be fading. After scoring on a pass from Karpp to Loop in the first quarter, Hamilton yielded three touchdowns to the Oneida team. But in the last quarter the Emeralds scored one touchdown, and the extra point, to trail by only five points. Then in the last Q0 seconds of play, Bob Karpp passed to Tony Amendola who scored the winning touchdown, giving Hamilton a squeaker, 19 to 18. At Hamilton the next week, the limeralds played host to Fliiitenanyo. The game proved to be an easy win, -I-6 to 25, in favor of Hamilton. Quartcrbacks Bob Karpp and Lefty Baker completed 8 out of I0 passes. Twice Skip Fitclien and Tony Amendola scored, while Dick Brieteustein, Dick Loop, and Bob Ripley each scored once. Everyone on the team got a chance to play. However, at .Yew IIIIVUIUFII, the next week, things proved difficult for our Hamilton team. New Hartford did all the scoring in this game: but Hamilton allowed only 19 points to be chalked up against them, which was New Hartford's lowest of- fensive record of the season. Hamilton fought its way to New llartford's twenty yard line, but a fumble and a penalty dampened the fire. This was the first loss for if Pi ITY FUUTB LL Fir-'t Row: R. Galler, J. Olmstead, M. Bob Karpp, Bill Betts, Tom Fitzpatrick, Sam Giordano, and Sam Stradling have come up from the undefeated Junior Varsity team of last year. Lefty Baker, Skip Fitchen, and Gary Grems complete the team. The first game was played at Hamilton with V. V. S. It was a see-saw battle all the way, with the Emeralds trailing by only one point as the half ended. Dick Loop, Bob Ripley, and Dick Benson were stand- outs in the game. But V. V. S., with Hennessy leading the way, was a little too strong in this first game. A tremendous Hamilton effort fell one basket short, leaving the score 52 to 50 in favor of V. V. S., at the end of the contest. Benson and Loop hit for 18 and 14- points respectively. Skip Fitchen, Tom Fitzpatrick, and Lefty Baker played well. The next game was played at VVaterville. The Emeralds forced their way back into the spotlight with a 60 to 40 win. Dick Benson, Dick Loop, and Bob Karpp scored 46 points among them, while Larry 66 Griffin and Bob Ripley were standouts. Wlaterville never was close to a win as Hamilton led 36-23 at the half, and 50 to 34 at the end of the third quarter. Clinton was Hamilton's next foe. This was the school which tied the Emeralds for first place in the league last year. This time Hamilton held the filinton team to 28 points while the Emeralds scored 59. Clinton made only two baskets in the second and third periods. This has been the greatest defensive effort on the part of Hamilton this year. Bob Karpp tossed in 17 points while Benson, Griffin, and Loop scored 14, 13, and 12 points repectively. These three games mark all the Emeralds efforts to date. After a loss to V. V. S. which could easily have been a win, the Hamilton basketball team has rolled over Waterville and fflinton. There is a very good chance that the team will again become Tri-Valley League Champions. But if the team happens to drop a few games, we should remember that one of the ob- jectives of the game is to have a good time, also. The players enjoy testing their skills at basketball, while the rooters like those long bus rides home. V7 front Roux' M. Roekafellew T. Rausa. G. Cook, D. Breitensteln, T. Tegtmeyer, D. Randall.
