These were Dexter Leland, Richard Horton, Kendall Edlxins, Harry Curtis, Robert Lloyd, David Nelson, Edward Dunn, and Iohn Sollien. The one party ol' the organization held before this goes to press was successful. Music by the Ensigns was enjoyed by all. On December 14, the B. D. Bfs presented Polly ofthe Circus, a three-act play by Nlargaret Mayo. Much credit for its success was due to the untiring elivorts of Bliss Carley who directed the play and to Mr. Ives and Miss Cook who helped with the new sets. HAMILTON FUTURE FARMERS Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve. The Future Farmers' organization is one of the most active in the school, tak- ing part in many affairs outside of our own school. This year, they sent judging teams to the Morrisville, Canton and Cornell judging contests and will also have a team at the Delhi contest which comes later in the year. They have continued to uphold Hamilton traditions in making high scores in all contests. Their most successful one was the Canton contest at St. Lawrence University where they had two first places, and third place for the entire contest. Recreation, in the form of a basketball team playing boys from Cornell Short Course, alumni and others, had its past in the year's activities. A Wiener and corn roast and a wood chopping contest also provided enjoyment. The members of the agricultural evening school were guests at their annual banquet this year at which the homemakers gave their services in preparing an excellent meal in their rooms. A few members of this group will go to New York City, Long Island and cen- tral New Iersey on a Farm Management trip during the spring vacation. This club, having the largest membership in school, meets every other Tuesday morning. It supplies experience in plays and prize-speaking for those interested in dramatics but not eligible for Masquers. Program committees provide the pro- gram for each meeting which includes one-act plays, skits and readings. At Christmas the club had a Christmas tree and party, at which time the members exchanged gifts. It also played for several basketball games. As this book goes to press, the band has its principal activities yet to come, namely, the Madison County Music Festival, and the New York State Band and Orchestra Contest, the latter preliminaries to be held in Hamilton. The finals will be held as usual in Syracuse. It is hoped that the Green and White Band may come out as well as it did last year at which time it was the only band in the state to win a place in concert playing as well as in marching. This year the Board of Education bought for the band several fine new in- struments, including tympani, a new drum set, bells, a bass clarinet, and a bass saxophone. With these and other new instruments the band has attained a much better and more balanced instrumentation with which it should reach newer and greater heights. Much praise is due Mr. Gall and Mr. Qtto for their fine work in making our band the leading organization of its kind in the county. Top Row: Gaylord, Gazlay, Greenleaf, Carroccio, Wheeler, R. Although the orchestra has not become very much larger, it has greatly improved in quality. The orchestra has enjoyed playing for its many concerts, some of which have been in other schools as well as in our own school. Among these concerts were numerous special assembly programs, the Parent Teachers Banquet, the three-act play, Polly of the Circus, the Prize Speaking Contest, the annual operetta and a tour of neighboring schools. The orchestra worked diligently to enter the preliminary Band and Orchestra contest which was held in Hamilton this year. Another important event in the history of this organization was its participation in the Madison County Music Festival held at Madison during the latter part of May. Congratulations should be given to Mr. Gall for his excellent leadership ol our orchestra. Top Row: Larsen, Gazlay, Austin, C., Peckham, Austin, D. About thirty individuals reported for mem- bership and the following officers were elected: Prewident . IDA FOUNTAIN Vl'C6-PF8.Vl.dEHf CUTHBERT AUSTIN Secreiaqu . LUCILLE EDDY It was decided to hold the meetings every first Thursday of the month in the Latin room. The programs are made up of short speeches or skits pertaining to Latin. Mythology is the main topic of the year, as it is of interest to all students of the department. The Latin Club presented a Christ- mas program in Assembly, singing appropriate songs in Latin. Plans are now being made for the Latin project for the exhibit in Iune. Much credit is due Miss Whitehead for her able assistance to the club. LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club held its meetings every first and third Thursday of the month during opportunity period in the library. The club has as its main duties the care and upkeep of the library. The members, numbering ten have prepared and Bled the new books which have been added to the library this year. The club members also have charge of the library during the day, making it possible to keep it open every period for the convenience of all students. The officers this year are: Prewidenf . WILMA DIXON Vice-Pre.rident RICHARD BERRY Secreiafjy . LUCILLE EDDY THE SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club held its first meeting in October and since then regular meetings have been held every other week in the science room. At the first meeting Ralph Bjorkman was elected president, Irene Norton, vice-president, and Marion Sikes, sec- retary. At every meeting there was a program. These consisted of labora- tory work, moving pictures and many other worthwhile projects. The pur- pose of this club is to help those in- terested in science to learn more about it ELECTRONS This year the Electrons under the instruction of Mr. Ives erected on the school roof, forty foot antenna towers and a one hundred and sixty foot antenna. Up in the attic the club built a sound proof studio in which there are the most up-to-date furnish- ings. Synchronous turn tables were purchased and an amplifier capable og carrying ten speakers was construct- e . Much credit for the success of the Electrons is due to its able and un- relenting instructor, Albert F. Ives, and to the leader and president, Ro- bert Lloyd. ASSEMBLY PROGRAM COM- MITTEE At the beginning of the school year a committee was appointed by Mr. Rose to take charge of our assembly programs. It is composed of three members of the faculty, Miss Carley, chairman, Mr. Gall, and Miss Gardner with Doris Browning, Alta Mosher, Mason Iones, Dexter Leland and Irene Nor- ton representing the student body. It began its work in September by planning the programs for the first semester. Each organization has been given an opportunity to provide a program. The mode of presentation has so changed that now the pupils have practically entire supervision, thus giving them fine training in public speaking. The committee, as well as the whole school, believes that this gnfcerprise has been highly success- u . The games in general were all close and verjv interesting to watch. Captain Dick Washburn led in the batting averages and was the outstanding player of the season. Among the graduated members of the squad whose serniices will be great- ly missed this spring are Bill Kerr, Red Chesebro, Paul Raine, and Dick Ryan. The scores of the season were: Hamilton Opponenir New Hartford 5 7 Yvaterville 2 4 Whitesboro 2 5 Clinton 5 1 1 Whitesboro l 1 4 Sherburne 5 2 Madison 5 9 New Hartford 18 24 Waterville 8 7 Clinton 9 17 Sherburne 8 5 Top Row: Sollien, W., Shelton, Penoyer Second Row: Yackel, Raine, Snyder, Tufts, Mr. Young Bottom Row: Wells, Ryan, Washburn, Chesebro, Kerr FCOTBALL Three weeks before school began last fall, the football squad began practice under the hot summer sun. The team was expected to be only mediocre this year but due to faithful cooperation of the squad and Ki Young the team had a very successful season. This year the team had play-by-play motion pictures taken of the last two games. It is expected that next year pictures will be taken of all the home games. Hamilton High School expresses its greatest appreciation for the tireless work of Coach Young, Manager Robbins, the scrubs and those who were on the squad but did not receive letters. Next year the team will miss Walter Sollien who was captain, Henry Berry, Iohn Wells, Richard Yvashburn and Nick Tufts, all of whom have played regular, dependable football. BOYS' BASKETBALL This 1954-1955 basketball team was generally successful, although it was not a championship team. Hamilton stood second in the league at the end of the first half of the season, and managed to win more than half of its games for the entire season, both inside and outside of the league. It would be hard to determine the best individual players of the year, but Nick Tufts and Dick Washburn led the team in scoring with ninety-three points each. These two and all the rest of the boys who are graduating will be very much missed by next year's squad. Although not spectacular, thisyear's season will be remembered along time as another one upholding theHamilton sportsmanship record. Appreciation and credit for the season's success are due to our coach, to Bruce Lamb who was manager, and to those boys who were on the squad throughout the season but didnit receive letters. Early in Ianuary the lettermen of last year elected Wvilma Dixon to captain the team. The girls' team, complete with much of its last year's material, had a much more successful season than it has had in several years, winning four games out of eight. The scores of the games follow: Ilamillon Upponenbv Clinton 50 22 Vtlhitesboro 20 10 New Hartford 9 16 Vllaterville 15 12 Clinton 22 10 VVhitesboro 15 14 New Hartford 6 25 Wlaterville 11 15 Top Row: Nelson, Nligonis, Innes, Nliss Van Den Burgh, Lloyd, Thompson Second Row: Swan, Depuy, Dixon, Lang, Taylor Bottom Row: Emmerth, Catlin, Sprague, Iuozaitis, Sollie, Edlcins BOYS' INTRAMURALS This year intramural basketball was again successful. A twenty-one game series was played, each of the seven teams meeting every other team once. At the end ofthe season the Grey and White teams captained respectively by Harry Grems and Henry Berry, played during assembly for the cham- pionship of the school at which time the Greys won. The results of the rest of the games are: Team Won Lost Grey 5 1 Wh ite 5 1 Orange 4 2 Maroon 5 5 Blue 2 4 Green 1 5 Scarlet 1 5 More boys are enabled to par- ticipate in sports by means of intra- murals. Aluch interest has been shown, and the games have revealed some real talent and material for the varsity squad. Many of these games played after school proved as exciting as the regular varsity competition. Among the individual high scorers of the year were Harlan Scott, Don- ald Morris, loe Mooney, and Iohn Sollien. This year volley ball has again been taken up as an intramural sport, the competitions being inter-class. Each of the four classes and the postgrad- uates will meet each other twice, mak- ing a twenty game series. Much credit for the success of the intramurals this year is due to members of the var- sity basketball squad, who refereed games and to Dick Berry, who record- ed and had general charge of the games. 1 . GOLF Hamilton again introduced golf in- to its extra curricular activities last spring when a team was made up of Harry Curtis, Howard Patterson, Iames Leland, and Red Gahan, captain, with Beverly Moses as manager. Full privileges to the Seven Gaks Course were given the team, which was coached by the course pro- fessionals, lim Dalgety and Bill Iohnson. Because the team started late, only three matches were played. Although the team didn't win any matches, it formed a nucleus from which a better and more experienced team may be formed this year. While we are sane and still alive This Day of Iune in '55 DE PROPERANTE We don't like to hurry. It is only on rare occasions that we are persuaded of the necessity of doing so 3 needless to say, these occasions are the curse of our life, the bane of our existence. Nevertheless, it becomes increasingly apparent that we must either overcome our antipathy to haste or become lost in the rear of civilizationw-probably as a follower of Buddha. It is certain that civilization will not wait for us to overtake it in its frenzied progress toward its goal g although it is within the range of possibility that, if we live long enough, we may meet it com- ing back, already dissatisfied with its goal and progressing just as frenziedly toward a new and more alluring one. We, as moderns, are very proud of this faculty of accomplishing our ends in a minimum of time Cwhether or not the ends are worthy of their accomplishmentj. We call it Efficiency, and have set it up as a deity to which we sacrifice our tal- ents, our desires, and our interests. Do something! is the ever-insistent cry, it matters not whether the deed is great or small, or whether it is a blessing or a curse to humanity. The man who accomplishes something, be he the discoverer of a panacea for all our social and economic ills or the perpetrator of a particularly juicy murder, is acclaimed throughout the world as a reliever of boredom fthe greatest boon which at the present can be conferred upon Man is the relief of that boredom which seems perpetually to encompass himj and soon acquires that smug, well-fed appearance which we have come to associate with persons continually ex- posed to the Public Eye. Not only does the present attitude require definite accomplishments of us, but it requires that these be effected in a minimum of time. ln compliance with this, literary and artistic productions Cwhich are almost invariably classed by the press reviews as masterpiecesj are turned out in a quantity and with a regular- ity and precision peculiarly reminiscent of the methods of that famous industry of Detroit. Vtle do not presume to criticize this present attitude toward the necessity of haste as unscemly or at all detrimental to the common good. As we have said, we personally do not like to hurry. Vtle have been brought up in a village in which a person is permitted to gaze uncriticized at an approaching vehicle, and, upon its passing, to turn about and, Hngering the chin with meditative hand, to stare sol- emnly until the last puff of dust is dissipated over the once-more vacant landscape. This is not permitted in the centers of civilization-not because the by-stander gives offense to anyone, but because really, you know, a person should have more pressing business than that of standing about gazing at the passing show. Still, we do not criticize 5 we merely say that: saving intervention from sources more than mortal, we are condemning unborn generations to a speed-crazed, neurotic existence which will wreck their minds, destroy their souls, and hasten them to untimely graves! The event is the tenth anniversary of the graduation of the class of '55. There is the still small Marion Sprague, and the still short Camilla Squires who toot and saw in a band. Ruth Plato has risen to glory in her roles as a Vampire Actress. The lady way back in the corn- er has been working in a side-show as a midget.
