FRESI-IMAN YEAR Remember, September 6, 1955 . . . that sunny, warm day, we the class of 1959 timidly made our debut on the scenes of Hamden High School. Innocently we swallowed tall tales of the fourth floor swimming pool and the private elevators. But it didn't take us long to get into the swing From those innocent days we've established ourselves and accomplished much. Football was off with a bang! School spirit was riding high - PEP was our motto! To the polls we went and elected our class officers . . . president, Mike Toomey, vice president, Michael De Gen- naro, secretary, Anne Colavolpeg treasurer, Beverly Kelly, historian, Adele Gay. Elected to the Student Council were Beverly Kelly and Mike Toomey. Then , . . the pride and joy of the Freshmen class came when we presented our very Hrst dance Picnic -'how wonderful it was! Mr. Nolan and committee members are still afraid to go into Penny's as we never did return the hundreds of flowers we borrowed. Thanks to our wonderful sponsor, Mr. Nolan, whose helpful ideas we couldn't do without, and Mrs. Bassett, who told us what to do and what not to do in the halls, our freshmen year was a success. SOPHOMORE YEAR Returning in the fall of 56 we were ready to play our role as Sophomores. Unfortunately we were still the school scrubs since there was no freshman class to pick on due to the construction of the new Michael Whalen Junior High. Our sophomore officers, president, Michael Toomey, vice president, Michael Achorng secretary, Carol Milici, treasurer, Carol Del1'Acyg lead our class aided by Student Council representatives Michael Achorn, Michael Too- mey, Karl Anderson, and Anne Colavolpe. A main attraction of the year was the Sweetheart Dance, in February, where students voted Melinda Neal to be Sweetheart Queen. ,May might have been labeled cheerleader and twirler picking month. After the tryouts which were followed by much anticipation Judy Cawood, Carol Milici, Sandy Adams, Linda Vischio, Cathy Iannotti, Melinda Neal, and Ginny Borelli, were selected P-E-P Roarersg while Jennifer Lloyd, Donna Doyle, Sue Ayotte, Judy Carbon- ella, Ann Aitro, Georgia Zaichuk, Joanne Iacobellis, Pat Ocone, Pat Davin, Lucille Sandella, Patty Epps, Brenda Massey, Theresa DiLello, were selected twirlers to add grace to school rallies and games. In the sports world the basketball team did an up- jumping job to defeat Hillhouse of New Haven C55-53 bg the first Greenie victory over Hillhouse ever recorded. Sophomore members of the team were Mickey De Gen- naro, Al Johnson, and Dave Hunter. After those final exams we looked forward to a long summer of relaxation and to the day when we would return as upperclassmen. 28
