A new existence follows in time's train To take the place of what has lately flown. The past is swallowed swiftly by the life That starts for us in but a fleeting day, This present time is crowded out by strife Which future time will swiftly send our way. And in these years we have most greatly changed From what we were when first we entered here. Our future callings have been here arranged And new ambitions found with every year. Yes, we have changed far more than we can know, But we have grown together these four years. So to our eyes the changes slightly show As now another one, the greatest, nears. Although we feel that we are loath to leave The happiness we now can call our own, There still awaits new things we must achieve In future days: now we are nearly grown. I HAMDE HIGH Class Histor FRESI-IMAN YEAR We entered Hamden High School as freshmen in September, 1937. The class oflicially began with our election of officers in November. Rob- ert Donahue was elected president, Warren Stannard, vice-president: Merwyn David, treasurer and Phillips Brooks, secretary. Our irst social event, as members of Hamden High, was the Freshman Dance, held on February 22 under the direction of our class adviser, Mr. Ran- dolph Aurell. The various committees included: Entertainment, Nancy Rhynedance, Marie DeMayo, Joe Cozenza, Margaret Fulton, Dick Sarrat, Bar- bara Lehr and Burton I-Iicock: refreshment, Paul Rebucci, Douglas Pierpont, Gordon Stevens and Rita Griswold: decoration, Jane Randall, Isabelle McKean, Kenneth Voowinkle and Frances Posinelli. Mr. Wyllie acted as master of cere- monies and those who attended danced to Charlie Summers' Orchestra. The second social event in which the class of 1941 participated was the Freshman-Sophomore picnic, on June 3, at Gardiner Lake. Miss Fison and Mr. Dykes accompanied the two class groups, and in spite of the rain everyone had a grand time. We ended our first year on June 21, looking forward to the beginning of our upper class life as sophomores. SOPHOMORE YEAR We returned to high school as disillusioned sophomores in September, 1938. We now knew the meaning of interim and home room guidance periods. The seniors were no longer etheral beings garbed in an aurora of pink light, but quite ordinary mortals who even condescended to take your table at lunch after you had already put your books on it in a vain attempt to save it from maraud- ing bands of upperclassmen. We had also learned how to tell which assemblies would be good and which bad, in advance, and how much you could get away with in certain teachers' classes. i The elections were hot and furious, with much campaigning and many a prideful mother's Johnny scribbling caustic comments or just playing tick-tack- toe on the posters of the aspiring candidates put up in obvious places throughout the building. When the tumult and the shouting had died away bathe results were found to be as follows: Merwyn David, president: Russell Sandquist, vice- president: Paul Rebucci, treasurer, and Mary Quinlan, secretary. Our sophomore year was also the beginning of the Honor Roll system and we discovered to our dismay that all too few of us were good enough to make the grade when the Honor Rpll was first announced in December by Mr. Moody. If you were fortunate enough to make it and wanted your admiring friends and CLASS OF 1941 E ighty-one relatives to see you listed with the glorious few, your name was either spelled so horribly that even you wouldn't recognize it or you just weren't mentioned at all. The big social event of our year, even though some of the zeros in our Four Hundred did manage to crash the Junior-Senior Prom, was the Sophomore Dance, held on February 25, a happy beginning for our spring vacation. Charlie Summers' band provided the music and all who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves. 1939 was the year the musical organizations traveled to the State, New England and National Music Festivals to win high ratings. Many of our class- mates set off for Greenwich, Worcester or New York, after much counting of noses and bumping and banging of instruments, with the Band, Orchestra or the Glee Clubs. Everybody who went had a wonderful time, even those who got lost , who ate or blew indiscreetly and who became hoarse singing Daisy and Three Blind Mice . So our sophomore year was concluded on a happy note and we looked for- ward to coming back in the fall as upperclassmen . JUNIOR YEAR In September, 1939, we proud upperclassmenn returned to our studies with a zest for learning. After some vigorous campaigning, our esteemed class oliicers were chosen. Merwyn David won the presidency of our class, with John Connelly as vice- president, Evelyn Sweet as secretary, and Paul Rebucci as treasurer. Even though our hockey team lost the Shanley Cup, they are still to be congratulated for their fine playing. The baseball team deserves the most credit, the spectacular way in which they sent runs across home plate, kept the crowds constantly on their feet and explains why they won the cup. Several times during the year we were royally entertained by our own Band and Orchestra. The Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra also gave its annual con- cert at Hamden. When the Symphony departed, students could still be heard applauding and crying for encores. In January and later in April we tried our hand at roller skating parties. Both Ventures were very successful due to the splendid cooperation of the two chairmen, Merwyn David and Peter Albertini. who were assisted by Jack Con- nelly, William Keeney and Bill Butler. The end of the year came before we knew it and with it the most outstand- ing social event of the entire school year, the Junior-Senior Promenade. The gala affair was held in our beautifully decorated gym and was naturally a huge success. Music was provided by a Yale Collegian and his musical-minded buddies. Thus one more year was completed and we juniors of 1940 are looking forward to our senior' year with eager anticipation. HAMDE HIGH Eighty-two SENIOR YEAR Seniors at last, and those little people walking down the hall are really freshmen, believe it or not I After much speech-making and banner-waving over elections, officers were finally elected. Arnold Kaufman walked off with the presidency, with Peter Albertini as vice-president, Nellie DePalma as secretary, Paul Rebucci as treas- urer and Nancy Rhyndance as our much-needed historian. The Dial started the year with Russell Sullivan as editor-in-chief, assisted by Mary Jane Stone, Susan Cartwright, William Lanzoni, and Richard Miller, acting heads of the various departments. In sports our athletic teams triumphed over all obstacles as usual-even though our football team was not always victorious they never failed to put up a gallant battle under the capable leadership of their captain, Alfred Ramelli. Our hockey team won the Shanley Cup for the fifth time due to the spectacular play of our team. The basketball team also turned in a line performance. In January we honored our fellow classmates by sponsoring a gala dance in the gym. All the people who attended agreed that this was a successful event due to the cooperation of the class ollicers, who were assisted by Richard Miller, Mary Jane Ingram, Marie DeMaio, James Barry, Warren Russell, Shirley Stretch and Edward Crotty, The year was also marked by a roller skating party. The success of this affair was due to the way Roger LaReau handled the publicity. The great social event of the year was the Prom. It was a great success under the direction of Merwyn David, chairman of the committee, assisted by Edward Crotty, William Smith, Edward Rosner, Burton Hicock and the class officers. In conclusion, we say as we leave the portals of Hamden High, To every one there openeth a way . FINIS OPERIS y MARTIN MALIA HAMDE HIGH Eighty-eight Y ACTIVITIES 1941 Eighty - nina Y all 1:1 3 V f lk i d H' h S hool with a team composed mostly of veterans opened the season at Coach Donnelly Ham en 1 c , - v Winsted on Octoier 5 with a 13-6 victory over Gilbert High. Behind 6-0 at the half, the Hamden eleven rallied in the final two periods. Callahan scored twice on short plunges. Both scores were made possible by the fine running of Jack Edwards. The first home game of the season ended in a 19-6 triumph over the Branford team. The score was deadlocked 6-6 at half time. The defensive play of Captain A1 Ramelli was out- standing. Vwlith a feeling of confidence after two victories. the Hamden team tackled a tough Derby eleven at Coon Hollow on Gctober 19. The game was strictly a defensive battle until the last 50 seconds, when Derby plunged over for a score. The score was the result of a 40-yard pass. The play of the Hamden line as a whole was excellent. While the tuneful 85-piece Hamden Band played stirring music, the Hamden gridiron war-- riors met a heavy. well-coached Hillhouse aggregation in the first night football game in the his- tory of the school. Thousands of excited spectators saw a very close fight in the first half, at the end of which the score was deadlocked, 7-7. In the second half, Hillhouse unleashed a smashing attack good for 18 points. The final score was 25-7. The plunging of Roger Hall and the defensive work of Arnold Kaufman stood out. Back in their own park, the limping Hamden warriors were nosed out by a smart East Hartford team, 1?-6. The captain and right guard for East Hartford bottled up Hamden's attack very successfully. On November 9, Hamden ventured to Middletown to play Woodrow Wilson, Class B champions. Hamden started very poorly and ended up on the short end of a 33-12 score. The only bright spot of the day was Joe Bruno's pass interception and dash of 70 yards to a touchdown. ' 1 Hampered by the loss of Francis Shay. able quarterback, the Hamden team closed the season with a 0-O tie- with their arch rivals, Commercial. Again and again Hamden was inside the 5 and 10 yard lines but lacked scoring punch. Captain Ramelli in his last game with Hamden played excellent defensive football. Playing their last game for Hamden High were Captain Ramelli, Jack Edwards, Joe Bruno, Francis Shay, Robert Eck. Jack Sugrue, Frank Reilly. William Dingwell. .Jack Maloney and Walter Bergammi. HAMDE 1-HGH . ' it mama.: 1:43111 C5 Hockey Coach Ames The Hamden High School hockey team annexed its fifth District League championship in six years after losing it to West Haven in 1940. The team started the season by defeating the defending champions, 3-2, in a hard fought battle at the Arena. The sextet subdued Hillhouse and Commer- cial by the respective scores of 4-0 and 3-2. In the second round, Hamden continued its winning streak by defeating the West Shore aggregation 3-2, and tied a stubborn Hillhouse sextet as Neale Gamache pulled an unassisted hat trick. Commercial upset the Greenies 3-2, causing a third round to be played. Hamden made it three straight by again defeating West Haven, 2-1, and clinched the 1941 title in an overtime 4-4 tie with Hillhouse. 1n the out-of-town games, the Amesmen won two at the expense of Nor- walk High, 1 1-l, and the West Point Plebes, 1-0. They lost the same number of games, one to Choate by a 1-0 score and the other to Cheshire Academy, 2-1. High scorer of the year was Neale Cmamache with 11 goals and five assists, making 16 points: Captain John Horne was runner-up with 11 points. Seniors of the 1941 team are Captain John Horne, Neale Gamache, Walt Brophy, Dave Zacchei, Vinny Johnson, Bill Lanzoni and Manager Paul Rebucci. ACTIVITIES 1941 Basketball The winter of 1941 brought to Hamden High School another successful basketball team. The team started with two losses but came up to a winning standard toward the middle of the season. After being tripped by Boardman Trade, the Green and Gold regained the services of Jack Connelly, only to be beaten by Hillhouse. Hamden played championship ball at times and then went off form for a game or two. Howie Robinson paced the attack through- out the rest of the campaign, setting a new individual school scoring record. He also led the team to new scoring heights against Meriden and East Hartford. Howie and Joe Bruno, co-captains, were the mainstays of the team, but Jack Connelly, Bill Butler, Ed Crotty and Joe Wright, who scored 22 points against Meriden for a new school record, all shared the glory. Paul Wagner, the only junior to play regularly, was a long distant scoring threat throughout. Paul scored the winning basket against Commercial to climax a hard-fought game in which Hamden was the underdog throughout. In the second Hillhouse game, Hamden's zone defense was solved and after a slow start Hillhouse went on to an easy victory. This feat was duplicated by Woodrow Wilson. After bad defeats, Hamden came back all the harder with the spirit of a Hamden team. Hamden split home and home series with Commercial, West Haven, Meri- den and Leavenworth. Throughout the season Hamden's boys fought for everything they got with the breaks against them most of the way. They never gave up and deserve all praise. HAMDE HIGH N inety-two xx ,X Baseball Their last year's pitching corps greatly depleted by graduation, the Ham- den High baseball team, defending their district league title, began their schedule by defeating Boardman Trade 10-6. The result of the contest proved that Coach Donnelly had produced two new pitchers to ill the gap left by Jim Doherty and Henry Cofrancesco. The Aristocrats were successful in their next three games with triumphs over the Yale J. V.'s, Meriden, and Davenport College of Yale. The seniors who will leave the team because of graduation are Al Ramelli, Fran Shay, and Howie Robinson. ACTIVITIES 1941 The Student Council During the year I94-O-41 the Student Council of Hamden High School has supported the drives of various charitable organizations. Among these were Red Cross, March of Dimes, and the Community Chest. The Council spon- sored the annual Christmas Party for school children of Hamden. New arm-bands for the traffic squad were partially paid for from Student Council funds. The funds used to support these activities were derived from the auction of lost articles and Hamden High School Movie Nights promoted with the cooperation of a local theatre. , The Student Council has worked toward school improvements: with the traffic squad a survey of cafeteria, problems was conducted and a new set of cafe- teria regulations resulted. Certain privileges are the reward of service. A number of members re- ceived the Honor Study privilege. A delegation of four members of the Council attended, as representatives of our High School, a conference on National Unity and Democracy. Wliat success the Hamden High School Student Council has achieved may be credited to its members and the leadership of Edward Rosner, president: Luke Camorata, vice-president: Alyce Penn, secretary, and Burton Hicock, treasurer. The Council members graduating this year are: Joseph Cosenza, Edward Crotty. Nellie Depalma, Alyce Penn. Margaret Fulton. Frank Cioodwin, Burton Hicock, Charles Kroger, Ward Minkler, Crescensio Rifino. Joseph Rosner, and Frederick Voos. HAMDE HIGH Ninety-four The Dial for 1941 Hamden High School's monthly publication, The Dial, has completed its sixth consecutive year and in all respects has lived up to the standard of excel- lence of previous years. Guiding the destinies of The Dial this year were Rus- sell Sullivan, editor-in-chief: .Ioan Waterman, assistant editor: Barbara Lehr, associate editor: Mary Jane Stone, school news editor: Susan Cartwright. feature editor, and Vvlilliam Lanzoni, sports editor. Most outstanding of this year's issue was The Guile, an April Fool satire on the regular features of The Dial. Miss Margaret Clifford once more filled the capacity of faculty adviser to the editorial staff, The Dial enjoyed another year of financial independence because of a busi- ness board par excellence. Richard Miller served as business manager, and Marie DeMaio as circulation manager. Mr. John Laden, faculty adviser to the busi- ness board, completed his sixth year as sponsor of this activity. Whenever The Dial requested the aid of typists, Miss Ruth Walsh of the faculty called upon her students to provide this assistance to the editorial staff. Good Luck is the sentiment of Dial members of the Class of '41 towards next year's staff. HAMDE HIGH The Mixed Choir The augmented Mixed Choir of 125 voices sang at Woolsey Hall with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra on March 1. It was a thrilling experience for all of us. The program consisted of the following: Holy Art Thou, from Handell's Largo, 'AFinlandia, by Sibelius, and A'The Prayer of Thanksgiving, by Kremser. The Girls' Choir of 90 voices, under the direction of Mr. Grimes, has had a most enjoyable and successful year. A selected group from the Choir has sung for various organizations in the Town of Hamden: on two occasions at the Hamden Plains Church. The fourth annual concert of the Choir was held April 18, 1941, combined with the Boys' Glee Club and the Mixed Choir. Ar- rangements were made for the participation of the Choir in the State Musical Contest at Winsted, Conn. The regular Mixed Choir of 70 voices sang most successfully at the annual concert on April 18. The Grasshopper made a hit, with two members of our class singing the solo parts, Stella Morton, soprano, and Roger LaReau, bass. The Boys' Glee Club, directed by Mr. Stebbins, also took part in the an- nual concert. They sang their favorite, The Waits . ACTIVITIES I94I Ninety-seven The Band The Hamden High School Band, consisting of 85 members, has enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in its history, having the opportunity of per- forming in many local events. The outstanding event of the 1940-41 season was the fifth annual band concert, held January 10, 1941, with seven soloists taking part. This concert proved to be the biggest financial success ever held in Hamden High School. The highlights of the evening were the performance of the Light Calvary Over- ture , the march from the opera Tannhauser , and the saxaphone solo, My Regards , played by Spencer Ahrens. The Band added color to the 1940 football season by performing at the Ham- den-Hillhouse game at Donovan Field, and at the Hamden-Commercial game at the City Stadium. The Band traveled to East Hampton, Conn., in December to present a concert for the benefit of the East Hampton High School Band: played for an assembly at the Fair Haven Junior High School, performed again at the Loew's Poli Theatre for the State Teachers' Convention, at the Whitney Theatre, and paraded for the first time in the New Haven Santa Claus Parade under the lead- ership of the new drum major, Joan Waterman. On May 16, 1941, the Band traveled to New London, Conn., to partici- pate in the State Band Music Festival, and concluded the season by taking part in the annual combined concert of the Hamden High School Musical Organiza- tions. Twenty-one senior members played for their last time with the Band in this concert. 1-IAMDE HIGH Ninety-eight Q 'N Q59 vr'1eeo4'i' I ' The Orchestra This year the 57 members of the Hamden High School Orchestra had the privilege of acting host to the 12 orchestras competing in the State Orchestra Contest Festival. The adjudicator of the contest was Mr. Francis Findlay of the New England Conservatory of Music. Concerning our Orchestra's per- formance of Cesar Franck's Symphony in D Minor , he wrote: A Hne showing with an extremely difficult work. Unusually carefully worked out detail. The spirit of the work was excellent throughout. I also thoroughly enjoyed the playing of the Lohengren Prelude to Act III and con- gratulate the players, the student conductor and the teacher who made it possible to make such a fine piece of work under the conducting of such a young man . On March I3 the Orchestra played at Troup Junior High School. Fol- lowing this appearance, came the tifth annual concert which took place on March 21. In addition to the Symphony in D Minor , previously mentioned, the outstanding work of this concert consisted of Coriolanus Overture by Beethoven, Second Hungarian Rhapsody by Liszt, and Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole For Violin and Orchestra . For the first time, the Orchestra per- formed under the leadership of a student conductor, Robert Fredrickson, who conducted the 'iloohengren Prelude . Seniors leaving the Orchestra this year are Lois Pelton and Walter Berga- mini, violins: Isabel Riley, Nancy Rhynedance and Olga Berger, 'cellosp Milton Beisiegel, double bass: Jean O'Neill, flute: Phillips Brooks and Jean Steenhoff, clarinetsg Richard Kenneson and Gloria Criscuola, trumpets: Dorothy Brandt and Richard Sarratt, trombones, Angelina Lucibella, piano: Kenneth Vowinkle, tympani and percussion.
