' 'Sm AMDEN IGH 1937 TRIBUTE by MARIl,YN DE LIC-UORI Here are the bricks and motar, here the hand Whic'h cast this building in its visioned mold. And here, too, is the pattern which controlled This gift to mind and beauty on our land. Here, dropping chains of darkness, warmth can stand Against the senseless planning of the cold, Who see no growth in freedom from the oldg But mark the shell and not the substance brand. Here are our bricks and mortar, so disposed That we may build the pattern of our mind. For us no inspiration can be closed Or darkened by tradition's fastened blind, But like a golden tower be composed, That all may see its splendor, challenge-lined. SENIORWOCKY iTwas eight-ten and the seniors bold Did rore and chatter in the hall. All noisy were the sophomores And the juniors lorded all. Beware the Final-Test, my lad. The questions hard confuse and catch! Forswear the movies, lass, and shun The Wessenburg dispatch! They took their heavy books in hand. Long time the knowledge tree they sought. So rested they in school all day And for awhile they thought. And as in hazy thought they sat, The Final-Test, where questions flame, Came stalking through the last two months And menaced as it came! One, two! One, two! At last we're through The dreaded tests. We ean't go bark. We've left them dead and with their scores We've come triumphing back. 4'And hast thou passed the Final Test? Come to my arms, my brilliant boy! Oh wond'rous day! Three cheers! Hooray! Cry parents in their joy. 71 ,Twas eight-ten, and the seniors all bo longer clattered up the hall. Their places, empty now, will be Filled up by others in the Fall. -FRANCES Al.l.EN, IQ37 Page Sixty-three AMDEN IGH 1937 JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY Then came the dawn! The brilliant dawn of the memorable September ll, 1936. We were in the new Hamden High School with a clean slate before us, ready to begin the modern mode of education. We were now upperclassmen, out to make good impressions on new teachers. Our library opened with Marie Guarino, Marie Hollingsworth, Theresa Cofran- cesco, Muriel Katz, and other students, equally capable, reporting for duty to aid our librarian, Mrs. Murphy. Although we had quite an unsuccessful year at basketball, such squad players as Bill Sumby, Roy Winchester, and Jim Powell gave promise of a brighter season the next year. The greatest success in our athletics was with the Hockey Team, the Green Raiders . George Eckles, Francis Burland, Bob Dunn, Art and Paul Laich, Jim Everett, and Bob Messier, displayed talent, as champions. Congressman Shanley ofli- cially closed the season by honoring us with the Shanley Trophy for winning the District Championship. The baseball call was answered with Ed Kromer, James F. Smith, Francis Cagliardi, and Ray Birmingham representing our class on the team. Our successful Dial was initiated with Fred Jackson as editor-in-chief, assisted by Elliot Barske, and Alvina DeLorenzo. Juniors on other boards were Ben Segal, Charles Boak, and Shirley Hine. The Dial Staff may well be proud of the paper dur- ing the first year of its existence. Lucien Cardinal's artistic ability supplied us with the school seal, for use on class pins and rings, and on school publications. The class election caused much suspense and excitement with preliminary bal- loting and rallies, our first President was Fred Jackson, Vice-President, Bill Behlerg Secretary, Dottie Ann Nelson, and Treasurer, Bob Vining. The Hallowe'en Dance opened our social season, but the most important social event of the year was the colorful Junior-Senior Promenade. It was a great success with a fioor show and the wonderful dance music. Junior members on the decoration committee were the following: Barbara Male, John Flynn, Dee Mahon. Music was supplied by our orchestra with Lois Keller as concert master, assisted by Arnold Jordan, and Mary Roche. The concert by the joint Clee Clubs was one of the best musical events of the season. The band distinguished itself with Everett .Johnson and Nello Malavasi. A very important day in our junior year was Sub-Freshman Dayn. The little insignificant Sub-Freshiesn with looks of fright ran around the corridors, getting lost at every possible chance. Dottie Nelson, Lois Keller, Bill Sumby were on the committee for Sub-Freshman Dayf, Several clubs were organized including the French Club, and the Dramatic Club, enrolling such artists as Eileen Pikosky, Carl Hauser, Leonard Hovey, and Clair Upton. The Public Speaking group entertained us on Monday mornings with The March of Time with such fine Thespians as Eli Cold and Dottie Nelson. And so, we, the class of 1937, passed with anticipation from our joyous junior days to our culminating year. By MURIEL Kxrz. Page Sixty-four AMDEN IGH 1937 SENIOR HISTORY Seniorsl It was a thrill to play the most important role in our scholastic life, ready to work, and to be in June the greatest graduation class of Hamden High School. This year offered significant activities and many experiences. Once again class elections gave a political atmosphere to the school: ending in the reelection of Fred Jackson as President, Elliot Barske as Vice-President, Jane Elder as Secretary, and George Eckles as Treasurer. The first edition of The Dial blossomed forth with Ray Walker as business manager, Fred Jackson as editor-in-chief, and a staff of about thirty seniors, all ready, willing, and able. The athletic year started with tryouts for the Football Team, with candidates including Eckle, Nielson, Powell, Burland, Gagliardi, Winchester, Smith, and Olson. Again the Green Raiders opened the District Hockey League with a crashing victory, and closed it holding the championship title. Bob Messier, Bob Dunn, George Eclcle and those inseparable twins, Paul and Art Laich, were largely responsible for the teanfs success. Our basketball team did better this year: Powell, Smith, Winchester, and Sumby played brilliantly. Later in March a call was issued for baseball candi- dates, with the following reporting: Smith, Wlinchester, Fahey, Kromer, Birmingham and Burland. The team surpassed our fondest expectations. The Track Team partici- pated in seven meets, all of which were surprisingly successful. The social life which makes up a large part of modern education, brought us, fortunate students, many happy moments. The Hallowelen Dance with its weird decorations satisfying everyone attending. Much of the fame of our orchestra was afforded through the expert contributions of our class mates, Lois Keller and Marilyn Delignori. Among the prominent clubs the Theatre Guild stood out. This vearls plays, As Long as I Livev and 4'Dead of Nighti' proved to be very successful. J me TE I JW Af' 'nwmld Each club offered to the students a chance to carry out his hobby and to build 7q '7 a' -Viv ZLL up his assurance. Active organizations included the Archery, Motion Picture, Com- mercial Service, Bowling, Dramatics, and Home Economics. A few of the competent workers on the Trafhc Squad, who always had law and order in the corridors, enabled us to walk safely, while we day-dreamed of the Junior-Senior Prom, our biggest social event of the year which took place May I4 in our gym. Johnny Flynn acted as chairman. The music, decorations, grand march, and entertainment made it an affair which will never be forgotten. And so with humble gratitude to everyone connected with our happy, and we hope, fruitful days at Hamden High, we bid a fond farewell. Page Sixty-five J ffl,-05,1 vt? A squad of about sixty men reported. After a few practices. Coach Wyllie had reduced this number to approximately thirty. With this smaller squad. Mr. Wyllie began real work. Due to the fact that we had no previous football experience, we did not have the equipment and consequently were considerably handicapped at first. For the first few weeks stress was laid upon con- ditioning thc squad. That a splendid job was done is shown by the excellent record of no injuries throughout the season. The lack of a proper field made it very diflicult to have any practice scrimmages, which are necessary to co-ordinate the team properly. Uniforms did not arrive until a few days before the first game. consequently. actual playing in uniform was a new experience to the squad. ln the face of these ditticullies thc final squad of twenty-three men showed up admirably, considering that they were playing much more experienced teams. Improvement in team and individual play was evident except for a mid-season slump which prevented the Hamden hasketballers from recording a much lmetter his- tory than they did. Alex Cave's point-scoring and ,limmy Smithis team play were, perhaps. the outstanding features. lim Powell ranked among the best defensivemen in the State. Bill Sunihy and Ray Winchester added greatly with frequent bursts of brilliance when help was required. Hama, Maturo was always ready and effective. Bob MacArthur, greatly improved toward the end of the season, played well in the latter games. Altogether the year's play indicated that Hamden will, in a very few years, be able to compete evenly with other schools of its size. HOCKEY SEASON Ol the more than eighty candidates who reported to Coach Dave XVyllie for prac- tice at the lveginning of the season. only ahout twenty-five were left after the pro- xerhial knife had done its culling for the year. We had a very lew of last year's regulars and things didtft look too bright. But with joe Wallace there to hold up the line and George lickle and Paul Laich to help lloh Dunn protect the goal. Hamden went through another successful season. When Joe's Gang. which included Art l.aich and lloh Messier, hecame tired Little Dick Stacy, Harry Geary' and Nello lVlalavasi did an ahle joh in not only protecting hut also in increasing our leads. Praise must also he given to F'ran', Burland. ttBill Higgins. lVlasso Massoni. and Gag lVlerola for their fine piece of work as the third line. Due mostly to the poor outdoor season, only Hillhouse otlered much compe- tition among the league teams. There is little douht that anyone who saw either of these hard fought hattles will eyer forget them. There are other events which will prohahly' stick in the memory of those who were interested in the team and their season. To mention a few: ,loe Wallat'e's hrillianl solosg Nello lVlalavasi's timely goal in the last Hillhouse gameg Captain George Eckle s exception defense work equalled only hy checking. in spite of his Siberia venturesg and Bob Dunnis spectacular puck saving in the Hillhouse games. The three games with teams not in the league were not as successful hut just as interesting. ln spite of the twelve to nothing score against our boys, the Yale Fresh- nten game was one of the most interesting ol the season. ln their first encounter on outside ice the Green Raidersl' were defeated seven to two by Taft School. ln the last game ol the season. with interest apparently lagging. Hamden played an inspired, hut inexperienced Roxbury sextet to a one to one tie. The season was culminated hy a comhined hanquet with llillhouse. Congressman James Shanley. donor of the Shanley Trophy' lthf- reward for the most successful league team! was the principal speaker of the evening. The nine plays a home-and-home series with Hillhouse, West Haven, Boardman, Wiilby, Bassick and East Haven. It also meets Branford, Yale Frosh, and Roxbury. The squad has made a creditable showing, winning four out of six games. lt. is not a brilliant team, but could be rated as a good average club for high school coni- petition. lt anticipates being runner-up in the District League. The school is very proud of its ball team and looks forward to following it in at successful season. Page Sl'1't'lllj-flI't.' AMDEN IGH 1937 IA-It to right, first row: lf. Courd. I. l'iseilm-Ili. C. Crimes. lVlusic Director. To quote Mr. Crimes: 'chineteen players showed up on that darkest of days in October, 1935. A thorough canvass of the entire school showed that that number included practically all the band instruments in the entire student body of 1200 students. Wlith no trombones. no basses. no baritones, no French horns. and no tympani. l wondered at first how we could ever hope to have a band. However, there was one thing which l didnit figure on-the fact that Hamden High School possesses the UHIIGSI collection of wide-azcrlke boys and girls that I have ever melfi As the class of l937 graduates. the Band numbers 62 student musiciansg twelve of the outstanding members are of that class. ln the spring of l936. the Band was able lo boast of bass horns. baritones, and trombones so that a concert tour of all the grammar schools of the town was given to interest grammar school pupils in the possibilities of Band and Orchestra music. ln the fall of 1936, with the inauguration of a full schedule of rehearsals during regular class periods, a firm foundation to the Band's development was laid. Friday evening. January l5, the first annual concert of the 00-piece Hamden High School Band took place before an enthusiastic audience which Hlled the school auditorium to capacity. The fame of the Band soon spread and in April the Band formally entered the State Contest and Festival at Waterbury and was chosen as the nucleus for the massed bands at the Festival concert. ln addition to appearing at school assemblies, the Hand performed for the New Haven County Parent-Teacher Association meeting. March l8g the Chamber of Com- merce banquet, April l5g and at the Town Hall on Memorial Day. The graduation of the class of l937 takes away the following members from the ranks of these student musicians: Trumpets: Burton Payne. Arnold Jordan, Thomas lVlurray., Fred Jackson. and William Sumby. Tromhones: Carl Hansen, and Robert lVlcCarty. Clarinets: Nello lllalavasi, and Mary Roche. Saxophones: Donald Perry, and William Bossoli. Bass Drum: Everett Johnson. Every member received strenuous tryouts in May or June ol the preceding spring and this year this organization is composed of the combined girls and boys choir conducted by Mr. Crimes. and Mr. Knellcr, respectively. Re- lll'tlI'SillS are held three times weekly during the lirst period. twice with the boys and girls separately and once combined. The Girls' Choir, under the direction of Mr. Crimes, made its first appearance at the l'. T. A. meeting in February and was most favorably received. The Boys' Choir, led by Mr. Kneller, appeared at the April P. T. A. meeting and also sang at the assembly on April l5. at which time the Mixed Glee Club also appeared under the leadership ol Mr. Kneller. The highlight of the season was the second annual concert of the combined music clubs of the Hamden High School which took place on Thursday evening. June 3. The concert. although representing both the Band and Orchestra, featured the Choirs and Cleo Clubs and the Mixed Choir sang the following numbers: Dear liand of Home .. ..... ..r., , . . , .Sibelius The Nightingale . .,...,, . . Tschaikowsky Czecho-Slovakian Dance Song , . ...,, Luvaas Swing Along ..........,. . . . . Cook Lullaby .. , ,,..,,....... ,.., . . Brahms liehold the Lord High Executioner ....,, . ,..,, Sullivan The climax of the program was the performance in concert form of excerpts from the opera. L'Faust , by Counod. in which the Mixed Clee Club joined forces with the entire sixty-five piece Hamden High School Orchestra. The effect was thrilling and the crowded Auditorium resounded with applause. 7 Twenty-live members, including our distinguished pianist and accompanist, Marilyn De Ligouri, performed with the Mixed Clee Club for the last time on June 3.
