At present they boast over one hundred dollars in their treasury, To obtain this money they raked leaves, held one food Sale, and were in charge of the concessions at a basketball game. They also served at the National Honor Society Banquet held on May ll. This class has contributed greatly in the field of sports as well as in music. Eight boys were out for sports and nine students participated in music. Tony Vierthaler was their president and Wilbur Smith their vice-president. Marlene Winsky was kept fairly busy for a freshman secretary. They have now over 560111 their treasury from the candy sales. This will be a rich little nest egg for them next year. They have a fine cheer leader who is Joyce Brown. Dorothy Robins very successfully represented the freshmen in Student Council. They have taken an active part in the extra curricular activities and have been represented on the honor roll every time. They have two home rooms with Miss Spangler and Mr. Shaw acting as their sponsors. It is composed of four officers and a representative from each of the four classes, Y-Teens, Hi-Y, Dragonettes, librarians, and the music and athletic departments. Activities sponsored include the annual Homecoming celebration, which was held this year the 19th of October, and the spring election, which elected Student Council officers and cheerleaders. They also solicited the town for Red Cross Bloodmobile, managed the coke machine, and put up the Christmas lights and decorations which included the tree in the lower hall, and cardboard figures above the entrance door. Through their hard work and determination at their regular meetings, held on alternate Wednesdays, and their outside work, they achieved the highest accomplishment a club can receive--a gold seal. The club has received this award for ten previous years. The Y-Teens are under the leadership of Miss Nelligan and Mrs. Geist. The Y-Teens have contributed much to society and to their school in the way of spiritual and social leadership, moneymaking projects, society, recreation, and charity. During the past year their activities included: A girl-date-girl party, a Y-Teen Cabinet picnic at the Harvey Co. Park, an annual Christmas part , a Hi-Y Teens picnic, working in the concession stands at football and basketball, games, a Father-Daughter banquet, Y-Teen Fall Conference, annual church service at the Presbyterian Church, and the iving of Christmas baskets for town members. ln their re ular meetings tie club had pro rams of different natures which they thought would ielp in the betterment of the clui and the members. Their programs included films, talent shows, musical programs, and character betterment programs. Their job consists of checking books in and out, keeping things in order, and library quiet at all times. The librarians for the '51 -'52 year, under the direction of Miss Nelligan were Phil Jacka, first hourg Bill McDowell, second hourg Evelyn Hoffer, third hourg Dorothy Janzen, fourth hourg Mildred Talbott, fifth hourg Beth Wiebe, first semester sixth hourg Louise Rodenberg, second semester, sixth hourg and Jack Salisbury, activity period. Beth Wiebe served as library chairman during the first semester, and Phil Jacka was library chairman the second semester. During the year the library had charge of one assembly program. The Receptionists are assistants to Miss Jewett and Mr. Shenk. They handle many simple jobs around the office which involve a great deal of time and effort. They receive visitors wishing to see Mr. Shenk, tally the lunch tickets, gather absentee slips, and run many miscellaneous errands. In it we entered a dramatic reading by Jan Gradinger, a humorous reading by Joan Nightingale, an after dinner speech by Dorothy Janzen, and a standard oration by Louise Rodenberg. Toastmaster for the after dinner speeches was Phillip Jacka. Jan Gradinger and Louise Roden- berg went to the District Tourney at Wichita and from there Jan went to the State Forensics at Lawrence. Scenes from Dark t MUSIC fggggi Ig' ff' -if l T WB The music department, under the direction of Frank Malambri, consisted of three large organizations--the band, the mixed chorus, and the girls' glee club--six ensembles, and numerous soloists, both instrumental and vocal. The Pride and joy of Halstead, the high school band, resplendent in their new blue and grey uniforms, participated in numerous events during the '51-'52 season. They marched in the Hutchinson State Fair parade and took part in the K. S. T. C. Emporia and Wichita U Band Days. The band played and performed for all the home football games and provided a pep band at all the home basketball games and pep rallies. They marched in BAND the annual Santa Claus parade and held exchange concerts with Sedgwick later in the year. Highlights of the year for the band were the Mid-Winter Concert and the Spring Formal Concert, held in the high school auditorium. The department entered twenty-one groups and solos in the MKL Music Festival and twenty-four in the District Festival. By getting l ratings, nine soloists and three ensembles qualified to go to the State Music Contest held at Emporia. Out of these twelve entries, four won highly superior ratings, six won superior ratings, and two won excellent ratings.
