FADM HALSEY was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, 30 October 1882, the son of Captain and Mrs. William F. HALSY. He was appointed to the Naval Academy in 1900 and graduated in February 1904. After graduation FADM HALSEY served in many capacities ranging from Naval Attache to Ship Com- mand. His early career during and subsequent to World War I was devoted to commanding destroyers. In 1935 at the age of 52 he won his wings and designation as a Naval Aviator. The succeeding years saw FADM HALSEY com- manding first the USS SARATOGA and early in World War II the South Pacific Force and Area, where he succeeded in routing enemy forces from Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. FADM HALSEY next as- sumed command of the Third Fleet and his forces left a trail of enemy ruin and destruction throughout the West- ern Pacific, culminating in attacks by his Fast Carrier Task Forces on Tokyo in July 1945. On August 29, 1945, FADM HALSEY, flying his flag in the 'USS MISSOURI, entered Tokyo Bay. On Sep- tember 1, 1945, aboard the USS MISSOURI, Fleet Admiral william F. HALSEY, along with General of the Army Douglas McArthur, accepted the formal surren- der of the Japanese Imperial Government. ' In November 1945, FADM HALSEY relinquished command of the Third Fleet which had exemplified his slogan Hit Fast, Hit Hard, Hit Often. Fleet Admiral HALSEY retired from active duty in December 1946. FADM HALSEY died in 1959 and was buried with full military honors on August 20, 1959, in Arlington National Cemetary. USS HALSEY QDLG-235 after Modernization. It takes a very special type of man, one blessed with a shiphandlerls touch and a natural ability to lead, to sit in the Captainis Chair and assume the awesome responsibility of Command. HALSEY is fortunate to have such a man. Captain Richard R. TARBUCK assumed command of HALSEY on May 19, 1979. He came to HALSEY from the staff of COMCRUDESGRU EIGHT in Norfolk, Vir- ginia, where he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Ops and Plans. Captain TARBUCK's principle assignments have in- cluded duties as Commanding Officer, USS WARBLER CMSC-2061, Commander Mine Division Thirty Two and Commanding Officer, USS KING CDLG-101. The Captain is no stranger to Westpac. USS WAR- BLER and MINEDIV 32 both called Sasebo, Japan, home. As CO of KING, he led her through two combat tours in Vietnamese waters and, during the India-Pakistan War, he guided her into new waters as she escorted the first United States Carrier Task Force to deploy into the Indian Ocean. We will always remember the wealth of knowledge he shared with us on the history and culture of the many places we visited. Born in Vallejo, California, Captain TARBUCK, gradu- ated from the Naval Academy in June of 1956. He and his lovely wife Roberta, are currently residing in Coronado.
