FADM HALSEY was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, 30 October 1882, the son of Captain and Mrs. William F. HALSY. He was appointed to the Naval Academy in 1900 and graduated in February 1904. After graduation FADM HALSEY served in many capacities ranging from Naval Attache to Ship Com- mand. His early career during and subsequent to World War I was devoted to commanding destroyers. In 1935 at the age of 52 he won his wings and designation as a Naval Aviator. The succeeding years saw FADM HALSEY com- manding first the USS SARATOGA and early in World War II the South Pacific Force and Area, where he succeeded in routing enemy forces from Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. FADM HALSEY next as- sumed command of the Third Fleet and his forces left a trail of enemy ruin and destruction throughout the West- ern Pacific, culminating in attacks by his Fast Carrier Task Forces on Tokyo in July 1945. On August 29, 1945, FADM HALSEY, flying his flag in the 'USS MISSOURI, entered Tokyo Bay. On Sep- tember 1, 1945, aboard the USS MISSOURI, Fleet Admiral william F. HALSEY, along with General of the Army Douglas McArthur, accepted the formal surren- der of the Japanese Imperial Government. ' In November 1945, FADM HALSEY relinquished command of the Third Fleet which had exemplified his slogan Hit Fast, Hit Hard, Hit Often. Fleet Admiral HALSEY retired from active duty in December 1946. FADM HALSEY died in 1959 and was buried with full military honors on August 20, 1959, in Arlington National Cemetary. USS HALSEY QDLG-235 after Modernization. USS HALSEY CG-23 USS HALSEY CCG-231, named for the gallant and aggressive naval leader of World War II, is the fourth of a class of nine ships constructed from the keel up as missile launching ships. ' Constructed by the San Francisco Bay Naval Shipyard, HAL- SEY's keel was laid on August 25, 1960 and she was christened January 15, 1962. Her construction was completed on July 8, 1963, and she was commissioned on July 20, 1963. After commissioning, HALSEY successfully completed five WESTPAC deployments be- fore being placed Out of Commission, Special on November 4, 1971, and turned over to Bath Iron Works, Maine, for Anti-Air Warfare CAAWJ modernization. Upon completion and recommis- sioning on December 16, 1972, HALSEY returned to her homeport August 1961, HALSEY's hulltakes final form 1 I l l l 'HI T FAS T' 6HI T HARD, 'HI T OF TEN ' ' .,.... ...M of San Diego. She made three more successful WESTPAC's before entering Long Beach Naval Shipyard in August 1977 for additional updating of the Terrier Missile System and installation of the Harpoon Weapon System. During the thirteen month shipyard overhaul, HALSEY's Naval Tac- tical Data System finstalled during the 1972 mod- 'ernizationj was extensively modified to provide in- creased capabilities in the area of Command and Control, so vital in today's complex world. The engineering plant also received an extensive over- haul to ensure the continued reliability necessary to enable HALSEY to continue to meet all commit- ments. Leaving the shipyard in September 1978, HALSEY spent the next year proving to the fleet that she was still Number One. Successful comple- tion of Systems Qualifications Trials proved that HALSEY's StandardfTerrier missiles were still deadly accurate against any and all air targets. The demanding rigors of the Operational Propulsion Plant Examination were soon passed with flying colors, proving the engineers and their plant were ready. Next, the intensive period of Refresher Training molded the crew into a well trained team of professionals ready for the Fleet. A summer of exercises, including a major Fleet Exercise, and HALSEY was ready for her next deployment. That deployment is the subject of this book. July 20, 1963 1
