RUSS AN WGCD On the second day of our Westpac, some 400 miles from San Diego, a sharp-eyed loo- kout spotted an unexpected sight. HALSEY had come upon the sailboat Russian Wood. Establishing radio con- tact, the OOD learned that the boat was some three weeks out of Hawaii bound for Los An- geles, and in desparate need of batteries for their engine and radio. As HALSEY lay to in the heavy seas, the sailboats skipper expertly brought her alongside. HALSEY's crew quickly transferred the needed batteries along with some wel- come treats of fresh meat, vegetables, fruit, milk and wa- ter for the boat,s crew. Soon HALSEY was once again westward bound and the Rus- sian Wood was on its' way to the east with a new apprecia- tion for the humanitarian side of the U.S. Navy and especial- ly the USS HALSEY.
