WASHINGTON TRIP Friday, 6:15 p.m. ---a long awaited day---we climbed aboard the bus---heavy suitcases, cameras- --waving good -by to friends and relatives---speeding on our joyous journey. Saturday, 5:30 a.m. ---New York. We all climbed from the bus, after a sleepless night, with wrinkled clothes and weary heads. We filed into the Henry Hudson Hotel where we stayed that night. We walked all over New York, saw a program at Radio City Music Hall, climbed to the top of the Statue of Liberty, rode the subways, escalators, elevators, and examined the stores. Sunday. We started for Yorktown, Penn. accom- panied by the Littleton, Mass. students who were with us during the rest of the trip. On the way we stopped at various places---Philadelphia, Valley Forge. Early Monday morning--Maryland. After an all-day ride through that part of the South and on the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, we went on an exciting tour through the Endless Caverns---New Market, Virginia. Washington--a hot day. We arrived and had to crowd into an already too -crowded cafeteria. Places of interest seen during our three -day stay were: the White House, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Bureau of Printing and Engraving, Library of Congress, Capitol Building, Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery- -changing of the guard, drill at Annapolis, Franciscan Monastery, Smithsonian Institute, George Washington Masonic Temple. We rode down the Potomac on a four -decked cruiser in the moonlight and stopped at an amusement park on the river. It rained all the time, but it was still fun. Friday night--back in New York. Although we were without a few of our best play- ers toward the end of the season, we won seven of our twelve games. Bob Gray '56 is-Q. ...Wim Back: Gail Johnson, Ralph Lathe, Arthur Avore. Front: Robert Gray, Ruth Rollins. A FRIEND - INDEED Mr. Leet, a favorite with all, had to stop teaching due to illness. A friend indeed, Mr. Johnson, came in to substitute. Leaming lessons from Mr. Johnson was a pleasure for his manner and sense of humor made him a very able replacement. World History Cla ss Pwr X-mr ..-eh DIRIGO GIRLS' STATE DIRIGO BOYS' STATE An honorable privilege ---- never to be forgotten. Girls' State is held at Colby College and Boys' State is held at the University of Maine. Juniors throughout the state who meet certain standards of leadership attend lectures on various procedures of government. The opportunities for the practical application of these forms of government were given by forming towns, counties, and a state, by campaigning, and holding elections. Recreational activities included basketball, tennis, ping-pong, volleyball and softball. Tours and special events were held. The delegates ate together in a large dining room and stayed in dormitory rooms. It truly was a thrilling and memorable occasion. There are flowers and streamers. Gail Johnson and her crew did a great deal of work to make the decorations beautiful. ,Z .Y ,jf JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM Connie Reid engaged a band that contributed to everyone's enjoyment of the Prom. The band was known as the M. C. I. Dance Band lead by Connie's brother, Jimmie Reid, who played drums Johnny Foss played trumpet, Frank McConnell played tenor sax, Fred Caron played alto sax, and Lloyd Cutting played piano. They were great! JUNIOR CLASS On September 3, 1956, we juniors started our third year at Hallowell High. Immediately did we shine in school activities. A good part of the football team was comprised of the juniors! V. Libby, D. O'Laughlin, 1. Calnan, M. Smith, B. Jones, S. Wilson, and Bill Holbrook. Cheerleaders selected from our class were M. Vickery, J. Lerette, S. Selwood, and L. Campana. Next on the program we contributed a large supply of talent to Hokey Pokey. T. Masciardri was chosen stage manager. M. Vickery was publicity chairman. Participation in the specialty acts were I. Hughes: the Hallowell High Sextette, consisting of the Misses Mary Vickery, Judy Nichols, Tykie Masciardri, Fran Maher, Jane Petherbridge, and Linda Campanag Joan Lerette, Glenda Merrithew, Joan Lerette, Mary Vickery participated in the dancing chorus. Endmen chosen from our class were Verne Libby, Bill Holbrook and Bryant Jones, A large part of our class was in the chorus. When basketball season began, our boys sparked again. Stan Wilson, Jay Calnan, and Danny O'Laugh- lin played on the varsity squad. Bry Jones and Bill Holbrook played on the junior varsity squad, Joan Lerette, Mary Vickery, Judy Nichols, Fran Maher, Tykie Masciardri, Linda Campana, and Patsy Kendricks played on the girls' basketball team. Mary Vickery has certainly contributed her share to the success of our class by writing articles for the paper on the activities that occur at our school from day to day. Hamilton, N. Larrabee, E. Smith, M. Rollins and several others made the gym look most attractive using black and orange streamers and other Halloween decorations including a stuffed skeleton. Hokey Pokey featured D. Waterhouse and S. Shain as soloists. E. Smith and G. Merrithew sang a duet while M. Colfer and B. Beane had the audience roll- ing in the aisles with their end man antics The sensational group tap led by E Cronin included J Webster D Drummond from our class We are well represented in athletics this year P Lerette played varsity football and basketball A. We soon dis- covered that all high schools have strange creatures running around in them called Seniors. These Seniors delight in tormenting Freshmen. So we soon found ourselves being herded through the streets in front of all the town. S N LATIN CLUB s - 'CP The school year of '55-'56 ushered in a Latin Club. Meetings were held twice a month once during free period and once on the members' ovsm time, usually Wednesday. The first few meet- ing were devoted to setting the club standards and electing officers. Sue Selwood was voted president: Marcia Daker secretary-treasurerg and Mrs. Smith was the club advisor. The club celebrated Christmas with a party at the High School. Latin songs were sung, games were played, and gifts with Latin phrases attached were exchanged. A Latin banquet and many Latin programs are being planned for the near future. On Friday, the 1'7th of February, the glossy white shell was broken into thousands of tiny pieces during the Winter Carnival at Hallwell High. Teachers and student alike bundled up and enjoyed a heap of fun in the crisp, frosty air. Cheers and shouts arose as girls and boys fairly flew across the front yard in snow-shoe heats. Contestants were started by Mr. DeLois's whistle and met by Judges Roy and Harfouch. In the girls' final race, Connie Barton crossed the finish line first and Franny Maher was second. Winn- ing top and second honors for boys were Brian Beane and Bill Holbrook, respectively, Andy Bowman, Pete Selwood, and Donnie Leighton were winners in ski events and obstacle races.
