Norre Dame Cathedral was a beautiful church decorated in gold wirh many wooden figur ines carved mro rhe walls. Sr Joseph's was a huge church famous for curing people of diseases Old Monrreal contained rhe original city buildings around which rhe present city grew Hall srudenrs are ar quoinr sidewalk cafes, rode carriages around rhe dry, and roured rhe World's Fair Expo Center. Student races in rhe stadium one day were followed by rhe Homecoming parade and community pep rally rhe next day Tim Dominy and Annette Piocenri reigned over Homecoming os king and queen, with Julie Homer and Adine Becker first and second runners-up. A bonfire, rhe first in many years, concluded rhe night. Friday was rhe doy of rhe big gome! School was adorned with red and white streamers, and rhe doy ended with on inspirational si-sir performed by rhe faculty Thor evening, alumni and fans cheered rhe ream for o victory Unfortunately, rhe Bock Falls Pockets blasted off, leaving rhe Devils behind 27-0. Having taken Spanish and English here or Hall, she hoped ro berrer her language and ro adapt berrer ro ours. Upon observing Spring Valley, ir musr hove been seen as a speck of dust in comparison ro her hometown, Bogora, rhe capital of Columbia, wirh a population of ap-proximorley four million. Among differences in rhe countries is dimare. From rhe region in which Vivian lives, ir is much warmer rhan rhar of an October temperature here. On many days while we were wearing our jackets and enjoying rhe days before Jock Frosr come, Vivian was found entering dosses well-equipped wirh mirrens and a scarf wrapped snuggly around her neck. Her visit here also gave her o special memory — rhe firsr snow she hod ever seen. Although Vivian was a senior and 18 years old, her return ro Bogora would find her orrending another year in her high school due ro differences in rhe school systems. Afrer graduating, she planned ro follow in her parent's foorsreps and srudy medicine or dentistry. In Columbia she lives wirh her parents, Dr. Abraham E Paz Cano ond Dr. Dhuvis C. Amador de Paz, her brother. Jose, and her Pekinese dog, Pinky. When she's nor or home, she's usually wirh her friends at rhe theatre, swimming, or enjoying rhe tranquillity of a picnic. During her stay, our visitor lived in rhe residence of Greg and Cathy McCook. There she gained an American brother ond sister, Casey and Tracy. Spore rime here was usually spent at parries, school dances, rhe moll, or wirh friends. Vivian was caught in a whirl of activities during Homecoming week. Her spirit, as oH spirit, gave Homecoming a boost. She rode on and helped decorate rhe senior float which read, Rod rhe Rodgers. To end Homecoming week, Vivian and her friends danced up a storm at rhe Homecoming dance. A rime musr come for all good things ro end, and Vivian was whisked away ro Columbia, a four-hour ride in a jet wirh one stop in Miami. Fourteen young men were ready to ploy football with fortification by a group of freshmen. After the initial practices, things looked optimistic. The underclassmen, though untested, seemed ready for an exciting season. The Red and White opened against Amboy The inexperience in the line was evident as the bod s rolled 24-0 The next two opponents, Dunlap and Marseilles, failed to yield a team; and the Demons were awarded 2-0 wins. Opening ogainsr Princeton, the ream played even to on 8-8 tie. Homecoming saw the Demons lose to Rock Falls in a close game, 19-12. Rochelle. Kewanee, Mendora, and Pontiac rolled by the frosh-soph squad. The learning process was evident os many sophomores were called up to the varsity during the latter part of the season. The offense was led by the running of Steve Koch and the passing of Aaron Campbell to Doug Domkuski. The defense was sparked by the hard tackling of Andy Wesrrum and Eric Turczyn. Although the 2-6-1 record is not impressive, the varsity will have good replacements for the graduated seniors. Srudenrs from several feeder schools were joined rogerher for rhe firsr rime in an organized practice. Sond-lor heroes soon became swearing bodies on rhe field. Run! Run! Gor ro ger you guys in shape! became Coach Doroski's barrle cry. Soon lessons in bkxking ond rackling began ro pay dividends. The primary goal for Coaches Doroski and Decker was ro devetope rhe row ralenr or hand. A schedule rhor hod proved ro be rough in rhe pasr again faced rhe Red and Whire. The inexperience showed as Kewonee seemed ro run pasr everyone in a 48-6 romp. Regrouping, rhe Demons bear rhe MDR JV’s 28-14 Several bright spots were noted on both offense ond defense. Men-dora and Rock Falls had ro play hard afrer close firsr halves ro bear rhe Devils 20-0 and 30-0. A group of freshmen were elevored ro rhe sophomore ream and did nor practice as much wirh rhe freshmen. This presented some problems for Coach Ooroski's ream. The Dig Red come bock wirh a 40-0 win over Amboy ond a 12-12 rie with a rough Rochelle ream. The season dosed wirh a loss ro Princeton. Highlighting rhe season were rhe electrifying runs of Jeff Dird ond Gory Orlondi as rhe Demons would come bock from adverse siruarions. The scorebook showed a record of 2-4-1. Before rhe srarr of rhe season, rhe ream losr rheir number one runner by rrons-fer The loss of other runners for various reasons throughout rhe year caused rhe Demons to loose rheir momentum. Despire rhese problems, rhe running Bed Devils compiled an 11-4 season This ser a school record for rhe most number of wins in a single season. Steve Schwarring was given rhe honor of being selected ro rhe all-conference ream. The invirorional finishes were nor whar had been onridpared, bur considering rhe problems encountered made accepting defear o lirrle easier. Wirh bur one senior Kenr Moe Herrmann leaving rhe squad, things certainly looked good for 1985. The return of Rich Savirch, Doug Bivaro, Mark Williams, Sreve Sch warring, and Neil Perzel gave rhe Bed Devils a solid nudeus for rhe upcoming seasons. The frosh-soph ream showed marked improvement throughout rhe year and will be rough ro handle in 1985. Mike Ellis, Bob Lehn, Jim Srebbins, Andy Ajsrer, and Mon-Vowels worked hard all year in developing rheir skill and technique. High hopes were anricipared for nexr year's cross counrry season. Running for rhe Vorsiry, Ned Perzel purs forth his bey effort ogomy Rochelle Runners get on rheir mork, ger ser, and rake off for rhe start of o sophomore run in o duel wirh Rock Falk The srarr of a comperirive girls' program in cross counrry characterized rhe '84 season Short on numbers, rhe girls were nor able ro ream score in meers. Individually, though, rhey had opportunities ro shine. Jennifer Nimee had an outstanding year. She became rhe firsr girl in Hall's hisrory ro make all-conference. In regional competition, Jennifer placed 5rh overall and 2nd individually Advancing ro sectionals, she finished 36rh overall our of 106 conresranrs. Individually, she placed 10th. Jennifer also holds every school record in disronce events ar Hall. Eighteen players tried our for the squad, half of whom had nor participated in 1983. Seniors Paul Bellerini and Paul Haywood formed the nucleus of the Red and White. Added were transfer Ray Lewis, juniors Brian Sebastian and Bill Parks, and freshmen Jay Sreinhilber. The season starred without fanfare In a duel meet with Henry and Wethersfield, Hall come up short, losing to Waring for rhe traffic ro dear on rhe 18rh hole, o rrio from o Sr Dede-Hal march war rheir rum Pitching from rhe foirwoy, Pool Hoywood's chip fob ro rhe left of rhe 2 pn Wirh o second purr, Terry Lmning holes our ond rokes o bogey score Henry by four strokes. This was ro be rhe pattern throughout rhe season. The Big Bed was not able ro reach consistency on a regular basis. Each march would find someone hot bur others nor shooting well. The varsity finished rhe seoson wirh a record of 0-15 in march ploy. The frosh-soph squad did fore a little better. They were able ro win two marches while failing 13 rimes. The biggest achievement was rhe lowering of strokes by each of rhe squads. A highlight of rhe season was rhe participation of two girls for rhe Devils. Renee Dermers and Ann McCarren were rhe pioneers on rhe links. The future continues ro look bright as rhe sophomores gained experience ond will make a valuable contribution ro rhe Red and White in 1985. 22 GOLF Hs opprooch shor folfcng shorr of rhe green. The ream coproins were Kim Roroplus, Dana Klug, ond Dodie Noll. The ream was coached by Barb Srank ond Ramona Noll. The season began wirh a Red Devil victory ogoinsr Kewanee. However, the season ended wirh a record of 2 wins our of 20 games. The conference rules changed the winning margin from rwo our of rhree games, ro rhree our of five games. The Devils pur up a good fighr, bur were nor able ro overcome rheir compeririors. During rhe regional tournaments, Hall challenged Tonico ond defeated rhem ro advance and challenge Losranr, rhe champion, on October 26. This resulted in another loss for Hall, bur rhe NOC released rhe names of rhe players selected for rhe all conference volleyball reams rhor some day. Senior Dodie Noll was chosen for rhe second ream, and senior Dona Klug received an honorable menrion. The day was nor o rorol loss. Blending rhe inexperienced players wirh lasr year's rerurning players inro a cohesive unir was rhe major goal of rhe year. Wirh determination they managed to pull our a 4-15 record. Major contributions were by captains Mary Berrotor and Becky Bernabei They worked hard all season even though their record didn't show it. Captain Mary Bertalot led rhe ream wirh her high scoring ability She was backed up by Becky Bernabei, Lori McDonald, Debbie May, Lisa Pettit, Carolyn Schwarring, Sue Vogelsang, and Lynn Wogner. Working together, rhe ream showed that they hod rhe skills necessary to defeat their opponents. The season gave each player more experience and confidence in a gome siura-rion. Wirh this under their belt, their hopes were high for next year. A booster's work is all too often unpraised, unrecognized, and unrewarded in terms of compensation for endless hours of work, countless telephone colls, and sometimes sleepless nights. A Bond Boosrer is a truck driver, a taxicab driver, a detective using rhe family car to chase down a lost piece of music, o chaperone, a cook, a confidant, and a problem-solver who must listen to rhe seemingly endless problems related to rhe band and come up with solutions to those problems. A Boosrer serves on countless committees, bur still rakes on rhe really rough jobs that hove to be done. Hon Prokup NATIONAL HONOft SOCIETY 115 Power Mechonics provide needy with holidoy food boskets and toys The Power Mechonics Club hod a very productive, gratifying year At Thanksgiving the dub with Student Coundl delivered food baskets to 20 needy families in the area. Various fund-roising activities were used to raise the money for the baskets. The annual Christmas Presents Drive for needy children was a huge success thanks to the Spring Valley Jaycees as both organizations contributed to the fund raiser. The Power Mechanics Club was therefore able to deliver Christmas presents to 50 needy children in the district. The dub hoped that in the future more dvic organizations would also help them increase the project even more. At Easter the dub donated money and worked with H.A.C. to collect and distribute Easter baskets to the needy. The group olso bought their own video cassette recorder for classroom use along with some new tools and equipment. The annual Power Mechonics Oub banquet was held at the end of the year or Jay’s Supper Oub. After speaker Jim Loy, Mr. Briddick presented the Power Club Award to Tim Sturtevant and the 150% Award to Jay Elwell, thus conduding another successful year. The students who rook parr in rhe program conducted experiments on their own os well as in a group They were in direct communication wirh NASA at all rimes during rhe nine-day Mission Watch, receiving rhe same satellite communications as NASA Mr Wesrrum originally submitted rhe idea of a Mission Watch program to NASA, and, in return, rhe school received much publicity during rhe mission.
