Monty Moreno hurriedly scarfs a taco in anticipation of other culinary delights. Food Mania Lunch hour was the mid-day time when one could really talk with his friends while eating. The open campus program allowed one to eat in the cafeteria or eat off campus. For those who ate in the cafeteria, the big question was, “What’s on a bun today?” The pizza and scroodles were a popular hit with most. The burritos and tacos, which were newly added to the menu, gave the school a new taste. Others brown bagged their lunch by bringing salami, peanut butter, fish, and other sandwiches, and mom’s homemade chocolate chip cookies for their dessert. Those who chose lunch outside the cafeteria, often walked down to the taco stand for tacos, Antonino’s for a sandwich, or to Mimi’s for a hot dog or ice cream during the fall and spring months. For those living close by, going home everyday became a relaxing ritual, providing escape from the lunches and people in the cafeteria. Foods 17
