PRESENTS THE 1963 HALL LIGHT TO THE FUTURE CONTENTS Athletics As high school students, we are offered many opportunities which give us the basis for our future plans. We learn to live and work with many kinds of people during our associations with the administration and faculty; with our participation in classes, organizations, and activities; through athletics; and most important, by the way we take advantage of our scholastic opportunities. All these things come together in high school and give us the KEY TO THE FUTURE. 4 CO-EDITORS— CHERYL KONETSHNY MARY JANE KRJYJEK BUSINESS MANAGER—BONNIE PINI DEDICA TION Our new addition in process of construction. In December of 1960, a bill was passed by a large majority of the residents of District 502 which would give Hall High School a new addition and remodel the present building. This year that proposed addition is completely finished and the students are enjoying its facilities. This measure was passed by voters, with and without children, with the realization that it would be an expensive project and that it would be they who paid for the cost of it. In appreciation for our “new school,” we, the forty-ninth graduating class of Hall, dedicate this year’s Hall Light to you, the citizens of District 502. 9 AD MIN 1STR A TION PRINCIPAL The citizens of Hall High School, District 502, are to be congratulated for approving the bond issue which made possible the beautiful new addition and the renovation program, which was completed this past school year. As a result of this program, our students now have the same educational advantages as do those in our neighboring communities. Our school plant is now large enough to accomodate an enrollment of 600-650 students. It is so constructed that new rooms may be added without altering the present structure. This past year our enrollment was 490. I congratulate you graduates of 1963. I wish you success in whatever you may undertake. Do not hesitate to call on the school for any help we might be able to furnish you. Virgil YV. Bingman ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL One of the many admirable traits of our young, thinking students is the reaction to, or possibly the absence of the pessimistic attitude toward, enormous initial tasks involving creative, discovery problems. With the proper channeling of their energy, they attack these challenges enthusiastically and fail to accept the defeatest opinion too often exemplified by the satement — “It can’t be done.” Charles Keyser BOARD OF EDUCATION Seated: Carl Blum, John Bussa, Dr. Henry Jacobs, President. Standing: Herbert Klein, Jr., George Micheletti, Otto Birkenbeuel, Dominic Rochetto, Walter Bernatavich, retary; Virgil Bingman, principal. The men on this Board of Education have given countless hours of their time and effort toward the completion of our new and renovated Hall High School. As students here, we will try to show our appreciation of your services by using our new and improved facilities to the best of our ability. In this way may we contribute to your sense of satisfaction for the good you hav 5 done. Mrs. Shirley Herrmann Secretary to the Principal 13 sec- CHARLES C. BAIN Agriculture. Science B.S.. FAREWELL TO A FELLOW SENIOR Well, here we are at the end of our high school road, and at the beginning of a thousand new adventures. As I look back over the past four years, I see many things that make me sad and unhappy — but as I compare them with the wonderful'experiences we ve known I cant help but feel that these years were full, successful, and meaningful. I remember days at school when we were rushed, days when everything made us laugh, and days when we wanted to cry. I remember that each day seemed a long thing, and sometimes painful — but now I realize that in the passing of each long day, the swiftly passing years were slipping by unnoticed. There were talks, and whispered confidences, and trusting, unquestioning friendships. And these arc the bonds that held us together. Although in life s journey we may travel on far and wandering paths, I hope that through the years you and I will always remain the truest of friends — for you possess all of the qualities of a sincere, thoughtful, unselfish, and loving friend. May God always bless you and may you continue to walk in sunlight and happiness for all days to come. 33 Ml UNDERCLA SSMEN Front Row: Jack Bussa, Vice-president; Tony Mautino, President. An air of anticipation was in the halls early in the week, even before the actual festivities began. Floats were being prepared by various clubs, queen candidates were being chosen, and decorations began going up. Thursday night a pep parade and bon fire was held during which Hall burned Rock Falls in effigy. It seems that this bit of vodoo paid off, for the next night Hall trounced Rock Falls 32—14 in the Homecoming game. Resolved: That the United States Should Promote a Common Market for the Western Hemisphere. This is a sentence familiar to all debate teams this year for it was the national debate resolution. Debaters, like our athletes, competed against schools in and around the North Central Conference. To be a good debater requires several things used in the correct proportions. The greatest of these is time. Before a debater can attempt to enter a debate he must have put in an unlimited amount of time on research and preparation. Also, a debater must know how to use sound logic, how to express himself fluently, and how to show good sportsmanship. Being in debate has many benefits. Debate instills in its participants a more fluent manner of speaking and a practice of weighing both sides before criticizing. Meeting debaters from other schools is another of its benefits. The members of this year’s debate team are to be commended for the fine job they did in representing our school in debate contests. 59 Suzie Smith ... Armistice....... Sam Lorraine . . The Student Council members, under the guidance of Mr. Richard Schulz, sponsor, and the leadership of Eileen Blum, president, and motivated by their freedom of thought and expression during meetings, have taken great strides forward in the past year. The activities of Student Council started during the summer months with the organization of a handbook for incoming students. Since then, the members have refinished the stadium restrooms, erected the Christmas tree, sponsored assemblies and a hop, attended district and state conventions, sponsored the coat-check at basketball games, and constructed the winning Homecoming float. An all-school election for officers was held again this spring with many other clubs and classes following Student Council's example. — I-TRY 1st SEMESTER AWARD WINNERS Juniors: Seated, Linda Keyser, Sue Cattani, Linda Ballerinc; Standing, Jack Bussa, Melody Athey, James Kuzma. HONORARY A CTIVITY CLUB One of the most prominent, outstanding, and oldest organizations at Hall is the Honorary Activity Club. To be worthy of membership in H.A.C., one must be outstanding as a scholar, as a school citizen, and as a-participant in extra-curricular activities. This club, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Lynn Nimee, has had a very busy year. Besides the regular meetings and potlucks, the club has sponsored a hop, candy sale, and a clothing drive for the Save the Children Federation. During Christmas season H.A.C. visited and brought gifts to the Children’s Home in Princeton. H.A.C. members also attended the musical “Carnival” in Chicago. Its annual banquet was held in the spring. Officers seated from left to right are Mrs. Lynn Nimcc, Sponsor; Bonnie Pini, Vice-president; Mary M. Ossola, President. SCIENCE CLUB Science Club, under the direction of Mr. Charles Keyser and Mr. K. W. Kirkham, is an organization geared to stimulate increased interest in math and science. Each member of Science Club was required to work on a project pertaining to either math or science. Many of the students’ projects were taken to DeKalb and displayed at the district science fair held on the university campus. As an added attraction this year, speakers from several universities were invited to come and speak to the Science Club members concerning the opportunities which are open to those who wish to further their education in either math or science. Modern Music Masters, better known as Tri-M, is an honorary organization for those actively participating in music events. Sponsored by Mrs. Mary Juettemeyer, Tri-M has become a coveted achievement for many. Tri-M is a nation-wide organization which includes both high schools and colleges. The initial purpose of the organization is to foster and to encourage an increased interest in the fine art of music. In the past year, Hall’s chapter of Tri-M has engaged in many projects. Included among these projects were sending two students to music camp, buying books on music for the school library, purchasing record albums for the club’s library, sponsoring the Christmas and Spring concerts, attending two potlucks, and holding formal initiation for new members. Tri-M financed the year’s activities through the candy machines and by sponsoring a hop. This year the National Thespian Society, Troup 426. had a new sponsor, Mr. Richard Pommier. Membership in N.T.S. is limited to those students who have participated in plays, have served on play committees, or who belong to the Debate Team. N.T.S. has been very busy this year by sponsoring two successful plays. In the fall “Springtime for Susie” was produced and in the spring “Charlie’s Aunt” was given. In the production of “Charlie’s Aunt,” a new technique was used. Instead of having the usual one cast, “Charlie’s Aunt” had two casts — one for each of the two nights it was shown. N.T.S. also sponsored a hop and held their annual banquet in the spring of the year. Officers, Seated — Gary Strell, President; Cheryl Konetshny, Vice-president. To be eligible for membership in this organization, one must have earned a varsity letter in one of the four major sports at Hall — football, basketball, baseball, or track. Guided by Coach Dale Pienta, the Lettermen along with the Junior Class sponsor the Letterman vs. Faculty basketball game each year. In addition to this they sponsor various activities during the year and purchase additional athletic necessities. Seated: R. Garland. President; B. Carey, Vice-president. LAMBDA CHI Lambda Chi, which are two Greek letters representing L.C., is the name of Hall’s Latin Club. Lambda Chi, under the direction of Mr. Richard Pommier, has had a very successful year. For the Homecoming parade, Lambda Chi entered a float, and in the spring the annual Roman Banquet was held. The annual banquet is based on the sequence of selling slaves, dressing like the Romans did, and eating what the Romans ate. The slaves, which are first-year members, are bought by masters, which are the older members. Thus, once a slave is purchased, he is obliged to take orders from his master. It proves to be a very enjoyable and entertaining evening. Officers. Seated: Mr. Richard Pommier, Sponsor; Jack Bussa, President.
