English Department Encourages Appreciation, Teaches Mastery of Oral and Written Language. The essentials of our language are taught in the English and speech classes. In the various sections of English I, II, Ill, and IV the student is able to master the fundamentals of grammar, to express himself in oral and written exercises, and to appreciate good literature. Four years of English are required, although speech may be substituted tor the fourth year. Vince Stalsis gives an oral report in an English I class, The students of an English Il class discuss the short story. English Ill students work on magazine articles. Speech students work on radio scripts.

Social Science Gives Oportunity to Study world Conditions. The students have an opportunity to study government and the history ot the present in the light ot the past in the different history courses which are offered. Ancient and medieval, modern European, and world history are offered to any who desire them, while every student must take U. S. history. Civics, economics, social problems, and indus- trial geography are additional courses tor students interested in the social sciences. A modern European history class. A world history class. Languages Give Invaluable Culture. Through the study of Latin and French the students gain a rich cultural back- ground which enables them to appreciate the classics and gain a greater and a lasting value from these languages.
