ARCHIE BROWN, the leader of our band. But ! he ' s something more than a band director. He is a symbol of a school spirit that has grown, in three short years, from a nebulous thing to a vibrant force making it¬ self felt on all school activities. This spirit is, of course, a result of the work of many people; but Mr. Brown seems to us to be the chief molder of this force. He, with his band, is present at all school assemblies, at all football and basketball games; indeed, anywhere that he is needed. As if that weren ' t enough, Mr. Brown originated a Pep Club to give organized moral support to our athletic teams. So with deepest respect and admiration, we dedicate the 1956 HALISCOPE to Mr. Archie Brown, the man who waves the baton. WHAT IS HALIFAX COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL? It ' s a building, yes; but no matter how beautifully functional it may be, a brick and mortar edifice is only the beginning of a school. HCHS is instruction and learning and par- ticipating and competing. Mar¬ shall Swanson, Fads and Fashions by Betty Lee Powell, and Dr. I. Quiz Em” by Delores Goodman. Several new columns were added when Ed Church and Janice Cole wrote on different topics each week. Comet Comments was a regular feature ofthesports pages and was written by Otis Poole and Louis Mc¬ Kinney. Nancy Bane com¬ pleted the list of columns with From the Bookshelf a regular report on new books in the library MANAGING EDITOR Louis McKinney Although Louis Mc¬ Kinney did not attend school for a period of two years, he returned this year to graduate and proved in¬ valuable to the STAR. He spent much of his own time with his work as Managing Editor and wrote the sports pages during basketball season. Besides his many activities in every branch of school life, Louis man¬ aged to work after school. NEWS BULLETIN EXTRA HALIFAX COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, JUNE 1 15£ PER COPY STAR’S THIRD YEAR SEES CHANGES FACULTY ADVISER EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Mr. Richard J. Fitz, Jr. Mr. Richard J. Fitz took over the reins as fac¬ ulty adviser and did a su¬ perb job this year. Although this was Mr. Fitz first year on the STAR, he was by no means a stranger to HCHS or to the field of journalism. He had previously taught English at this school. He graduated from the University ofRichmond where he spent much time on the Richmond Col¬ legian. There he gained his newspaper experience which enabled him to lead the ST AR to a first place in the CSPA contest. 1 95 5-56 saw many important changesin the STAR which played an im¬ portant part in the paper ' s success. The major change came when Mr. Richard J. Fitz became faculty ad¬ viser. The editorial page was changed to a large extent and featured several columns and ’Student Fo¬ rum , along with the regu¬ lar editorials and related cartoon. An editorial board was selected and did a commendable job in choosing topics of interest for the editorials. A new character was created by the STAR when Joe Hall began drawing Halifax Harry, a cartoon character whoappeared with each issue. Dr. I Quiz-Em” this year featured pictures of everyone who contributed to the column and a per¬ manent master head was drawn for the Star- lighters. With an entirely new staff, a new director, and many changes, the STAR managed to break financi - ally even for the first time in its short but noteworthy career. The Editorial Board Bernard Marks Bunny” Marks, the first senior to become Editor-In Chief of the STAR, did a commendable job this year. He was responsible for laying out the pages of the paper and writing edi¬ torials. He was in charge of seeing that every part of the paper was ready and at the printers on time. Bun¬ ny spent much extra time at the print shop and at school after hours in carry¬ ing out his job. STAR WINS CONTEST The Star this year was entered in the highest contest offered in the nation for high school papers and received a first place award in the CSPA contest. In this contest issues of this year ' s papers and copies of 1 a s t year’s STAR since Easter were sent in. The SIP A contest was also entered but notifica¬ tion was not received until May 5.In this contest three consecutive issues were sent in. MANAGING EDITOR Edwin Church Edwin Church turned in a creditable year of work on the STAR in spite of his many other activities. As Managing Editor he wrote the sports pages during football season and had his own column during the re¬ mainder of the year. Ed spent much of his own time on the paper and gained valuable, first hand ex¬ perience at the printers. NEWS BULLETIN This page is sponsored by CREWS OIL COMPANY of South Boston. Dolores Goodman, Ann Jenkins, and Janie e Cole are looking over cartoons and copy for a future editio n of the STAR.
