When all was said and done, LOOK WHO CAME N NUMBER O One year after a season of close losses during the regular season, the conference tournament, and the state tournament, the varsity boys prepared to erase memories of what may have been. The goal was met as they united in claiming the conference championship, the first solely owned varsity boys' basketball title since the 1974-75 season. igh expectations anced about the campus, the ommunity, and even the con- erence. Word sneaked out that alifax possessed the pre-season ick for the Carolina Academy 'onference varsity boys' title. Most of us had played together ince the ninth grade and 'junior arsity, and we knew each other ell and had team unity,', emarked Ronnie Keeter. As a esult, the predictions grew, espe- 'ially after two strong opening erformances. A poor shooting erformance added to the revious year's horrors as the team ripped in the conference opener t Hobgood. Call it 'ithekjinx con- inued. Remarkably, Ronnie eeter called that loss the most emorable regular-season game. 'It woke us up. Look ho Came In umber One continued After a narrow loss to a red-hot Albemarle team at Elizabeth City, the team headed into the heart of the conference race. Beginning 0- 1, the boys rallied to win the remaining eleven conference match-ups and compiled an 11-1 conference championship record and a 15-2 overall record. Two keys to the title were a double- overtime win over Hobgood and a twenty-two-point smashing of Enfield there. Those back-to-back wins answered all questions and erased any doubts. jeff Green at- tributed the team's success to working as a team and never giv- ing up. Avenging both early- season losses, the team concluded TRAPPING DEFENSE keys another con- ference victory. Tommy Wright cornered Tarboro-Edgecombe's Mike Hale. TEAM MEMBERS. The season's goal moved closer to reality. A bye and a 53-49 defeat of Northeast placed the Vikes in the conference tournament cham- pionship against Enfield on their homecourt. A flu epidemic took its toll as the Vikes were upset 38-33 by a team they had earlier defeated by twenty-two. The defeat forced a playoff game to determine the rep- resentative for the state tourna- ment. At Halifax, Enfield met the 1 76 EI Boys' Basketball true champion as the Vikings sailed to a 47-30 victory. In the N.C. Inde- pendent Schools Division A Tournament, the Vikings muscled a 63-61 overtime win from Wall: O'Neal and upended Vance 53- to advance to the state title gan Defending champion High Po Wesleyan oversized and out powered the Vikes 69-39. Conch ing with a 19-4 record, the Vikir claimed second in the state 1 somehow to many they were than next to number one.
