AN EXTRA HOUR to study describes a Thursday afternoon detention hall. For minor offenses students faced the extra hour, which was often used for studying or for cleaning. THE VALUE OF PUNCTUALITY equals one hour, or so they say. Angie Howell and jeff Green retumed to homeroom for the afternoon somewhat surprised that the halls were not crowded with students. Crowded halls received credit for tardi- ness during the early days of school. A FAMILIAR SIGHT each morning, Mr. Alston writes admittance slips for absences and for tardies. Even with the classic excuses, sometimes THE GUI G GOT TOUGH 'The alarm didn't go off! My car wouldn't start! K'But I missed the bus! These excuses, sometimes legiti- mate and sometimes not, ranked among the classics. Not all of the crutches related to tardiness, Frequently, incomplete assign- ments and other responsibilities encouraged creative thinking? To discourage tardiness, students faced a new rule that provided automatic punishment of one day of detention hall for three consecutive tardies. Effective for most students, the rule had its regular offenders. Experienced seniors shared some of their most frequently used Cand heardj excuses. Running out of gas, having a flat tire, and get- ting caught by the train often hindered transportation, Some students simply 'lhad to go to courtf' The fifth period English IV students once begged mercy from Mr. Nelson and protested after lunch, The cafeteria bell didn't ring. Once again, outstanding students were a oURcE or PRIDE, Opportunities for enrichment and for competition provided students of different grade-levels the potential to experience success. Students held to their heritage and represented the student body in local, district, andstate events and excelled. Poetry contests, poster contests, essay competitions, and other academic-related events brought honor to the school on numerous occasions. Presented at the 1985 Spring Awards Day, the award represented outstanding merit in academics and athletics. LEADERSHIP was the focus of the Rotary Leadership Conference, March 1-3, 1985, in Ahoskie.
