These excuses, sometimes legiti- mate and sometimes not, ranked among the classics. Not all of the crutches related to tardiness, Frequently, incomplete assign- ments and other responsibilities encouraged creative thinking? To discourage tardiness, students faced a new rule that provided automatic punishment of one day of detention hall for three consecutive tardies. Effective for most students, the rule had its regular offenders. Experienced seniors shared some of their most frequently used Cand heardj excuses. Running out of gas, having a flat tire, and get- ting caught by the train often hindered transportation, Some students simply 'lhad to go to courtf' The fifth period English IV students once begged mercy from Mr. Nelson and protested after lunch, The cafeteria bell didn't ring.
