ma.sKW ozwel, AUDITIONS - nervous enthusiasm - innate desire to do best reading possible - the forceful, the shy - all hopeful THE FIRST CUTS - expectation CALLBACKS - This is itln - the first hurdle cleared A particular part readings - confident - determined - THE CAST LIST - the blending of surprise and chagrin - anticipation mingled with doubt- HOORAY! - rehearsals - scripts attached to hands - taped boundries - awkward wanderings - scripts give way to props - lights blend - reality softens to illusion - characters emerge NO SCRIPTS - memorizing -- not acting - keeping one line ahead - LINE - the set rises slowly - tape gives way to walls - doors open and close - windows up and down - lines become real - acting at last- Characters - a play MORE PLUSES THAN MINUSES - costume fittings DRESS REHEARSAL - one pause means disaster ELEMENTARY PERFORMANCE - giggling - noisy audience - cheers - youthful responses - awkward applause A Q'They liked itf, - anticipation - cast pictures OPENING NIGHT - parents - relatives - worst of all, friends - one down FINAL PERFORMANCE - applause - tears - excitement - embraces - lingering departure - cast parts CAST PARTY - dismantling the set - empty stage - 'CI wonder what Mr. A has picked for the next show?', As a director I work to make myself superfluous. The play gradually becomes the students' - both backstage and onstage. My satisfaction comes in sitting in the first row of the balcony on performance nights and watching the production - a spectator. The play is in their hands now - their combined efforts and talent now work to produce the final result - a hit show - not merely a High school productionf' It is only then that I can really measure the results of my direction.
