I'm Kathy Kelly, editor of your 1959 Havala. Are you wondering why I'm standing here like this? Well, this year the staff and I are all set to take you on a guided tour of Haley- ville High via the Havala. We feel that in order to show you every part of H.H.S., a personal you and me tour by the Hav- ala staff would be the best way to do it. First though, introductions are in order. l'd like you to meet the little fellow standing next to me. He's Leo. You caught your first glimpse of him on the Havala end sheets as Leo spans the heavens, and, throughout this year's book you will meet him again and again as he attempts to help guide you through our own Haleyville High School. The staff, Leo, and I have collected all the high points of this past year and put them into print and pictures so that you might have permanent memo- ries of 1959. Of course, it was a tiring, year-long iob lwitness the circles under our eyesj, but we feel that every headache, worry, and sleepless night will be rewarded when you come to the end of our guided tour and realize how truly wonderful H.H.S. is. Exciting moments like win- ning the Russellville football game for the first time in six years, the glitter and excitement of the prom, the' ever-awaited graduation, everyday happen- ings like your English class, fill- ing out a Who's Who ballot, and your locker sticking when you have one minute to make a class, all these are included as only a small part of this book. So, if you're ready, so are Leo and I, let's turn the page and begin to iourney through Haleyville High . . . P I O I X64 ' wiv 0 ' 'ixee Q dex 066 cjivlx an 5 . Une- pfage fe W ' Tell Dorie Not to Cry, the second play, a highly dramatic one, is about the conflicting love of sisters for the same man. Dorie, Gail Quillenp Patricia, Sara Dean Blake, Babette, Dianne Cowart, Georgia, Davene Nichols, and Fern, Judy Harris, await the arrival of Cliff, the man in question, for his marriage to Patricia. A Night in the Country, the comedy pre- sented by the Senior Class, tells of a young girl's struggle to present her family in a better light to her boyfriend, whom she hopes to marry. Ralphie, played by Paul West, is the boyfriend who has to sleep on the porch in a broken down hammock, Doug Kirkpatrick in the role of Jackie, the ever-eating son, and Bill Alverson the loud-but-loving papa, carry on a late evening conversation. The Mystery of Mouldy Manor, the mystery- turned-comedy, is the hilarious story of murders for the love of money. In this scene, Hulda, the maid, Mary Slaughter, sneaks up on Dr. Carver, Paul West, and rescues the detective, Nick Sher- lock, Bill Alverson, sent to save Jennifer, Becky Gay, from the evil clutches of Dr, Carver. J: D 5675 VINA Vina, the first game of the '58 season, naturally caused unrest among the teamfno one knew what to expect. Once the game was underway, Haleyville dis- played a tremendous offense, scoring early and per- mitting every boy who was dressed out to partic- ipate. Vina's score came against the third and fourth teams. This opening contest was a preview of what the hard-hitting Lions were capable of doing this season. SULLIGENT The Lions really got their feet on the ground in this game, rolling up a total of 579 yards on offense and unleashing a very good passing game that caused the visiting scouts to get the iitters. Even though Sulli- gent had a lot of young, inexperienced players, they gave the Lions a good battle until they were completely overcome by the reserve strength of the powerful Haleyville team. WINFIELD This game came into focus as the big turning point of the season, Winfield had a strong team and were hard to handle. By the courage and determination of the Haleyville boys, they played an excellent game. The ends were very outstanding on defense, and the blocking on the punt returns was perfect. This, com- bined with their terrific knock-out punch was too much for the Pirates to hold, and the Lions went roaring on... 66 HAMILTON Due to the rain, the Winfield game had been played on Monday night. On Friday, the day of the Hamilton game, talk was still warm on the Winfield battle. This made it hard for the Lions to get the Aggies on their minds. Hamilton's team came with blood in their eyes and almost conquered the Lions, but once again the power of the Haleyville team was to prove itself to be more than the Aggies could hold. N RUSSELLVILLE The greatest victory of the year for the H.l-LS. Lions-it was, without a doubt, the best team work and individual effort put forth all season. The contact was vicious-our passing game really paid off with three touchdowns. Although the Tigers gained a lot of yardage in the first half and gave our Lions quite a scare, the defense stopped 'the Tigers almost in their tracks during the last half of the game. Thus the Lions chalked up their fifth victory. XNX X-4 FAYETTE Because Fayette had held Winfield in a close score the week before, the Lions went into the Fay- ette game prepared for the worst. The situation looked dark on the opening play as the Tigers scored with a lateral pass play and then held the Lions short of a first down. But the Lions refused to be held in check for long. Shortly after their loss of a first down, they started scoring in every way possible to once again exhibit a tremendous offense worthy of champions. The mighty mascot, Leo, con- tinued to roar... 671 DOUBLE SPRINGS After having a week off and hearing a lot of Talk about what the Double Springs team did not have, the Lions had begun to feel that all they needed to do was to show up for the game. Double Springs scored twice before The Lions could collect Themselves and reorganize enough to push forward and win over what appeared to be a stub- born, and well-prepared opponent. 555 LEIGHTON The Lions didn't have much information on the Leighton team, except to know That They were big and rugged. They went into the game ready to face most anything only to shortly find that the Lions were much more powerful, and rolled through to a comparatively easy victory, as once more, every man on the team had a chance to play. CARBON HILL Since most of the Lions had seen Carbon Hill play little more than a mediocre game against another opponent, the team made the worst mistake in football, that of underestimating your opponent. The feeling was that this would be iust another game and that the Lions had smooth sailing from there to the end of the season. The Bulldogs, however, had other ideas, they played the best game of their season to give the mighty Lions their first defeat of the '58 year. 68 ff . ff was 'gf ,Q , va 1 3' YQSVJ MOULTON GAME Moulton, not having won a single game up to this point, did not give the Lions much to worry about. Most of the Haleyville team felt that the season was already over. This resulted in barely managing to get by Moulton To bring in the ninth win against one loss for the 1958 Lion team that was one of the best ever produced by Haleyville High School. In the dignity of the noblest sense, she has instructed us, encouraged us, and led us by her example. Always ready to understand, to sympa- thize, to laugh, she has given freely of her time, talent, and herself. A gift of service and spirit on her part which, in countless ways, builds the morale of students and aids them in the quest for learning and good citizenship has meant throughout the years a greater Haleyville High School.
