' --- r. up assemblies---Side door of the Hudson Theater---Pizza House---The Willeys--- I , I On May ll 1956 the Iumor Class of Hale Hlgh School held 1ts annual prom at the Stow Town Hall The motrf of the prom was Stardust. The decoratlons conslsted of sllver st ars and mrdmght blue crepe paper stage was cleverly decorated wrth a whrte p1cket fence and flowers The music was furnrshed by Larry H111 s orchestra from Lowell Massachusetts, and was greatly enjoyed by everyone We should like to express our srncere apprecratlon to all those who helped to make the prom a success I I . ' I streamers , forming an arc over the center of the dance floor, while the - - I I Class Prophecy One nrght as I lay tossrng restlessly rn my bed the most fantastrc dream came to me The year was 1977 twenty years from the present trme Thrs turned out to be the year I was to take a trrp to Mars The government had opened a rocket arr base rn Stow where all shrps left for the Moon and Mars After purchasrng a round trrp trcket, I boarded the rocket and settled down for a long Journey The shrp was berng delayed for one passenger, whom we srghted runnrng across the freld frrst dropprng her handbag, and then her coat Iust as she reached her seat, our conveyance lrfted and we took off I sat starrng at the befuddled woman, tryrng to re member where I had seen her before Oh of course rt was Nancy Johnson, my old classmate! After rntroducrng myself, we sat together and talked of old trmes Nancy was strll lrvrng rn Stow, whrch was now qurte the metropolrs srnce the new a1r base had been burlt She enlrght ened me concernrng the whereabouts of many of the others of the class of 57 Shrrley Blanchette why, of course I remembered her Yes, I knew she had marrred, but what happened to her after that 'P Nrne chrldren Shrrley had nrne ch1ldren! Well, she always had been a patrent sort Nancy told me Elarne Carmrchael had opened a restaurant shortly after graduatron and that now she owned a charn of them all across the country Elarne s wealth hadn t gone to her head, though as she strll vrsrted Nancy qurte often From what I was told, she was strlla clownll Mary Iokrnen had moved to New York where she had obtarned a Job as secretary Mary and I had roomed together for srx months She was employed by a theatrical agency, and after a year she had rrsen to the hrghest posrtron pos srble private secretary to the presrdent It was Just about thrs trme Mary was introduced to Iohn Willrams, one of the wealthrest men rn the Unrted States Rumor had rt that Iohn was backrng a show Well Mary and Iohn h1t rt off qurte well and they are strll very happrly marrred after erghteen years We had been travelrng about two hours, so Nancy and I went to stretch our legs We met the stewardess, and to our surprrse, rt turned out to be Ioanne Lawson She sard that a few years after leavrng school her Job as secretary became so dull that she couldn t bear rt any longer She told Grnny Iokr of her plan to become a stewardess and Grnny began to consrder a srmrlar After many hours of travelrng, we reached the Moon Nancy and I had never been there before, so we were very anzrous to land The rocket shrp passed carefully and qurckly throughthe air locks, and soon we were rnsrde the man made atmosphere Only a few mr nutes passed before we were takrng our frrst steps on moon sorl A sudden clamorrng after the lrttle stooped man who was the last passenger off the plane, made us look more carefully at hrm In utter amaze ment Nancy and I suddenly realrzed that rt was our dear old prrncrpal Mr Oakey Sens1ng hrs frarl condrtron, we rushed to hrs ard but a man wrth a camera rn one hand reached hrs srde frrst It was Ronnre Denaro' The four of us made our way to the arrport coffee shop, seekrng refuge from the other reporters Mr Oakey told us he had grven up teachrng rn order to enter the screntrfrc freld He stated that he was havrng a diffrcult trme though, because he spent too much trme tellrng Shaggy Dog Storres, and not enough trme workrng Ronnre had come to the Moon when the frrst newspaper was started He was now the star reporter on the Moonbeam Trrbune He told us that June Macomber dropped rn to see hrm qurte often when she landed there Iune had Jorned the arr force after graduation and was now on space patrol Ronnre rnformed us further that Ioan Herrrck and Ann Stott were also rn the arr force but they very seldom got to the Moon Ioan spent much trme on Mars berng engaged by the physrcal trarnrng servrce of the arr base there to trarn young male recrurts Ioannre al ways drd have a way wrth the stronger sex In her spare trme, we were rnformed, that Ann ran a nursery wrth the help of Albert Erkkrn, who was a rocket prlot Our dear cuzzrn had prloted the frrst trrp to the Moon from the Earth but now he Just went back and forth between Mars and the Moon Well, trme was runnrng short, so I boarded the shrp alone Nancy was stayrng at the Moon for awhrle The trrp to Mars was qurte uneventful, and I slept most of the trme Once agarn the rocket slrpped down through the arr locks and I hurrred down the steps to put my feet on solrd ground . . . I I notrced a n1ce lookmg woman 1n unlform trymg to get my attentlon ln the corner of the alr port rece1v1ng stat1on As we came closerl saw that rt was Lee Hannon Lee was a mall woman ln charge of br1ng1ng the mall 1n from other planets Well, she always had been interested rn males when we were 1n high school Lee told me what mrsfortune had befallen poor Ray McCarthy It really was a shame because Ray worked very hard when he landed to get a good Job on the moon He was an accountant and such books th1s boy could keep! The only thing wrong was that Ray worked 1n a prlson there but suddenly no one was ever bad All the cells stood empty, so the government had to close rt down Poor Ray! When I left Lee I declded maybe I should go to church and say a prayer for Ray The church was somewhat darker than lt was outside, so I couldn t see when I f1rst entered From the front someone was saylng, Is that you, Sally? Imag1ne after all these years! A f1gure came toward me and Iwas rackmg my bram to place the fam1l1ar vo1ce At last my eyes focused and Isaw be fore me Whrtey better known ln other crrcles as Dav1d Klnsl ey! Dave or Reverend Klnsleywas pastor of the largest church on Mars Hrs parish was very wealthy and Wh1tey was very happy When I explamed why I had come into the church Whltey told me that he had heard of Ray s troubles and had hired hmm for his own personal accountant Whitey told me what had happened to two of my other classmates In lme w1th hrs customary efforts to aim higher, as dlsplayed during those excltmg basketball games rn hlgh school Dav1d seemed to be concentrated on the stars which he studled avrdly wrth the rntentlon of becommg a future authorlty on astronomy Asslstrng Dav1d, and attemptlng to set h1m stralght when necessary was a former hrgh school buddy who was always on hand when Dave needed a partner The concluslon had been drawn that heavy 1ntellectual pursuits had agreed w1th Paul Rzasa, Judgmg from hrs corpulent bulk so unllke the lanky lad of the late f1ft1es In touring the Mart1an c1ty I slghted a beautiful new factory way up on a hill A sllght 1n vestigatlon told me that it belonged to two men by the names of Laurl Katvala and Russell Lawrence These two brxght lads had put the1r heads together when th1s new terrltory had been opened up and they had come up with a marvelous 1nvent1on turkeys made by machme, dead, cleaned and with no feathers at all Of course these fellows had a thrivmg business because they never had to buy grain, repalr turkey pens, or any thing else that ordinary farmers always had to do It took only two men to operate the entire factory one to feed the machrne and another to put the fln'shed turkeys lnto the boxes at the other end I always knew we had some orlglnallty 1n the class of 57 The only person I hadn't found wh1le on my trip was DebbyCobb Iinquired at the local lnformatlon center as to her whereabouts Miss Cobb was the proud owner of Celestlal Race Track She started out w1th only one horse, Lady Dancer, and had won so many races that the race track couldn t pay off any more and was obliged to make over the property in payment to Debby, with no strings attached Debby was one of the wealthiest individuals in the universe now, and most of her money was spent on her horses She was still single but many men were trying to marry her The trouble was that she wasn t sure whether lt was for her money, or her natural charms I grew slowly aware of a growing light and the sound of birds in the distance Slowly they came nearer and nearer to me Suddenly the feeling of lying in bed came over me and I quickly opened my eyes, sitting up wrth a start I remembered my dream but wondered why I should dream about the Moon, when a smell of Llmburger cheese became very apparent to my delicate 'lose Ah yes the Moon is made of green cheese, so they say Sally Sewall - - - - n - - u l I I I 1 ' ' ' . .
