CGMMEN ceMaNT 'nc 'Q 9 W' fx! 8' Q Woman s Place m American Progress We hold the se truths to be self evldent That all men are created equal that they are endowed by the1r Creator wzth certa1n unal1enable r1ghts that among these are l1fe lmberty and the pur su1t of happmess For many years after th1s statement was wrmtten mto the Declaratlon of Independence th1s equahty was not beheved to extend to women G1rls were not allowed to attend school nor women college They could not enter profes s1ons such as law and med1c1ne and above all they had no vo1ce 1n the government exther nat1onal or terr1tor1al As years passed however women came to take a more pronnent pos1t1on 1n Amencan llfe When the country schools of the Un1ted States developed g1rls were gwen the same 1nstruct1on as boys At Troy New York Emma Wmllard after undergomg r1d1cule and persecutmn es tabllshed a c1ty endowed school that gave women the same educat1onal advantages as men W1th1n a few years Oberlm College opened 1ts doors to both men and women The effect was natlon wlde Even before the C1v1l War women were workmg hard for the 1mprovement of cond1t1ons 1n our country On a March mormng 1n 1814 Dorothea D1x V1S1ted the House of Correctmn at East Cambrxdge Massachusetts and went home that mght so shocked and terr1f1ed at what she had seen that she could not sleep What had shocked her so was the ghastly cond1t1on of the msane at the Ja1l They wore shackles the1r cells were dark a1rless and unheated and the walls shxmmered w1th frost Many wardens beat the mmates 1n order to obta1n sllence research she took her f1nd1ngs to the members of the Massachusetts leg1slature When con fronted wxth the shockmg evmdence they quxckly prov1ded for the f1rst hosp1tal for 1nsane patlents at Worcester From Massachusetts she went to Rhode Island Mame and then made her way throughout the Unlted States workmg unceas1ngly unt1l the phght of the mentally 1ll was vastly 1mproved On January Z1 1901 one of the most sensat1onal women 1n Amermcan h1story walked down the streets of W1ch1ta Kansas smgmg Onward Chr1st1an Soldlers She had a hatchet 1n her hand and when she reached Jlm Burns saloon she rushed 1n through the swmgmg doors As customers fled and the bartender ducked Carr me Nat1on threw beer bottles at the mlrrors and smashed 1n the heads of whlskey barrels w1th her hatchet In a few m1nutes the place looked as 1f xt had been struck by a cyclone By her f1ery and spectacular crusades she helped arouse the 1nd1gnat1on that made nat1onal proh1b1t1on posslble seventeen years later Dorothea D1x and Carr1e Natxon are but two women 1n a f1eld of thousands who have been and are workmg 1n the f1eld of soclal reforms Jane Addams as head of Chlcago s Hull House and Clara Barton founder of the Amer1can Red Cross devoted the1r 11ves to th1s cause day a vast number of women are employed 1n varlous flelds of welfare work The Umted States has produced many great wr1ters among them several women Harrlet Beecher btowe became natlonally famous for her 1nsp1r1ng novel Uncle Tom s Cabm whmch dep1cted slave llfe Everyone has at one stage or another read one or more of Loulsa May Alcott s books descr1b1ng the lxfe of average Amerxcan of the day These and a host of contemporary wr1ters have helped put our country on the hterary map , -O O . . ,, . . . G ' Class Hlstory Dear Frlends If you w1ll g1ve me your kmd attent1on for a few mmutes lw1ll relate to you the story of a marvelous class the most wonderful class that ever happened at Old Hale Hxgh namely the class of 1953 Its llfe contmued but four short years yet every day of those four years was crowded w1th events When the members of thxs remarkable class have all ach1eved the fame and honors that are bound to come to them the memor1es of those four years w1ll llnger m the hearts of each and everyone But I must return to the beg1nn1ng of my story It was 1n September 1949 A D that th1s br1ll1ant group of boys and g1rls f1rst made the1r trmmphal appearance 1n the halls and on the campus of Hale Hlgh and from that day unt1l the day of graduat1on there was more mtellectuallty 1n the atmosphere of that 1nst1tut1on than was ever known before or probably wxll ever be known aga ln As Freshmen we suffered many 1nd1gn1t1es but as Sophomores we passed them on to the class below us By the end of the f1rst year the freshness had ent1rely d1sappeared We had become qu1te fam1l1ar w1th the school customs and curr1culum so that durlng the second year we were able to enjoy more of the soc1al functxons and fest1v1t1es of school l1fe Next came the .Tumor year A few changes were made 1n the personnel of the class as we had lost Ralph Crowell Ralph Ban.f1eld Ernest Beland Walter Scesny and W1ll1am Johnson but we had welcomed Audrey Law A course 1n Drmver s Trammg was 1nst1tuted thls year for JVUHIOTS and a car was rece1ved also the pat1ent help of Mr R1chard Bejune whose trammg made lt POSS1b1e for some of us to secure our l1cences Two very successful dances were held durmg our Iun1or year our class havxng become famous for conductmg the best dances ln Aprxl publ1c speakxng coached by Mrs Ruth Howard of the faculty was the mam 1n terest of our class Betty Lxnden Cath1e Vodoklys George Nlaclver and Davxd Crowell par t1c1pated The se four went to Lxttleton to compete w1th other schools w1th the result that George Maclver won fmrst pr1ze wh1le Dav1d Crowell won th1rd pr1ze One of our major projects as .Tun1ors was selectlng a class r1ng whlch was accomp11shed after careful exam1nat1on of samples Ah the t1me had come We were gomg to have our .Tumor Prom Preparat1on were made and on May 9 1952 some one hundred were enjoymg themselves at our fmal dance of our Junxor year At last the Sen1or year came w1th all 1ts d1gn1ty and lmportance and xts great feel1ng of super1or1ty over all the other classes And w1th lt came the thought and preparat1ons for graduatlon the select1on of the motto the class flower the class colors the marshal the gowns and all that enters mto commencement The year was just beg1nn1ng though and there was lots to be done Under the capable d1rect1on of Mrs Fa1re Potter Cheaper By The Dozen was presented to the publ1c on December 12th and 13th O : . . . . . 1 . Two early issues of the Pompositticut , one dated January 1914, and the other, June 1915 have recently come into the hands of the Class of 1953. These yearbooks were printed thirty- nine years ago, and have been carefully pre served by Mrs. Carl Thompson who kindly lent them to our class for comparison. This book differs greatly from ours. It is smaller, with fewer pages, no pictures of the graduates or of school activities, yet reading through the pages, you quickly realize that the same class spirit existed then as now, There were baseball, basketball, prize speaking, de- bating teams, etc, There was competition with schools An example given of a remark of one of You say you cannot hear what lam tell you again The class of 1915 believed in this The The The The in other towns, but above all there were class jokes. the teachers back in 1914 was say1ng'P Well repeat what you did not hear and Iwill grassy Freshmen sassy Sophomores brassy Juniors classy Seniors In these yearbooks it was customary to list the names of the graduates not only of the class of that year but of several years previous lt is interesting to note that many years there were but two Seniors to graduate The yearbook states that prior to the year V914 there had been thirteen graduations in Stow with approximately fifty graduates Looking over the lists of names we find many who are still in town today Think back perhaps you are one of the graduates And then there are many who have taken up residence in other parts of the country In the front of this book is a picture of the edi or 1al staff the only picture in the book there are three girls and five boys whose clothes proved of interest to the class of 1953 The boys appear neat dignified and serious in their dark suits and stiff collars there were no sport clothes worn to school in those days The girls are wearing high buttoned shoes partially hidden under long dresses or middy blou es and skirts there were no nvlons Let s salute the editorial staff of these early yearbooks the years 1 4 and 1915 Perhaps fifty years from now a Senior when thinking of material to make his yearbook interesting will haxe before him the Pompositticut of 1953 Carol A Vtetherbee Do You Remember? ' ' I V X ' - ' I 1 V ' I emo Y -1- .1 in? w .Z J whbk-L Cheaper By The Do en The Senior Class of Hale High School chose Cheaper By The Dozen as the year s Senior Class play This play was dramatized by Perry Clark from the famous novel Cheaper By The Dozen and it is especially popular in high school dramatic circles The original story was written by Frank B Gilbreth Jr and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey The play was most capably di rected by Mrs Faire D Potter of the faculty George Maclver and Eleanor Warren as Mr and Mrs Gilbreth headed the cast assisted by Elmabeth Linden Daniel Woodhead Susan Sewall Ray Crue William Whitney John Peck Catherine Vodoklys Carol Wetherbee and Jane Colby who played the parts of the Gilbreth s child ren Edward Jensen was Larry the special boy friend Sylvia Wanhatalo had the part of Mrs Fitzgerald the housekeeper while Donald Freeman appeared as Doctor Burton Eleanor Peck portrayed Miss Brill the old maid schoolteacher David Crowell took the part of Joe Scales the cheerleader Honey was the real live dog The following committees were appointed Properties and lighting Mary Erkkiien llelen DiP1etro Vivian Brown costumes Eleanor Cameron Myrtle Pugsley Ann Herrick vickets and adxertising Loretta Goucher and Audrey Law Under the direction of Mr. Ippolito music supervisor several musical selections were 1:1615 - ed by a section of the school s band made up of underclassmen. ' rx Basketball Our energetic basketball teams, members of the East Central Basketball League for the past three years, began their 1952-53 season on December Sth at Lunenberg. The boys corn peted in seventeen games while the girls took part in sixteen. Practice sessions took place on Saturday mornings inthe Hudson Armory with Miss Frances Macomber coaching the girls and Mr. Robert Muir coaching the boys.
