The Keys to the Kingdom of True Happiness It is in the libraries of the world that the records of man's past are preserved and that his future may possibly be assured. It is this almost holy room, holding as it does the sum of all man's learning, that reverence for scholarship begins to grow as the student leafs through the greatest books of the world. L. ....,. A busy room, once the school day starts, the library attracts those students who would unlock doors by the use of books. MJ 3 Board of Education Left to right: Dr. Charles C. Mason, Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Virgil O. Wood, Member Mr. Fenelon Boesche, Member Mr. H. G. Barnett, Member Mr. Wm. L. Butler, President Mrs. J. Littleton Daniel, Vice-President Mr. Carl C. Beesley, Member Mr. Villard Martin, Ir., Member Mr. Claude Rosenstein, Attorney As 1962 graduates of Nathan Hale you stand upon the thresholds of countless closed doors. Some of you will open doors leading to colleges and universities, others will open the doors directly to full citizenship in the community. Since the beginning of time, knowledge has unlocked the doors of the mystic and the unknown. Today, education continues to be the key which opens the doors of the future. The knowledge and skills gained in high school have given you many keys for your key-ring of knowledge. Further study and learning will add to this number. Adequate education opens all doors. But remember-your sense of values will help you determine which doors to open. May you use your keys wisely. Dr. Charles C. Mason The Last Word This third edition of the Patriot will excite you when it first appears. As the years hurry on, the book will become increasingly valuable. You will look upon faces that in the happy past you may have seen daily, but they are now far away. You will look upon scenes, and as you look, you will live again some priceless experiences. I have a strong conviction that in this Patriot you have something more than an exquisite scrapbook, and in the total contribution of this volume you will find a message-a message which will remind you of your own ambitions and your noblest aspirations. It is my hope that you will reach your goals with all the rewards of those who achieve their best and those who serve mankind with devotion and humility. Mr. Lieb Richmond Principal 2 5 2 Mr. L. B. The art department under the capable guidance of Miss Sylvia Samaras exposes its students to many phases of art. Mrs. Norma Dobson as English department chairman, guides the thirteen other English teachers who make up the largest department of the school. She coordinates the responsibilities of all, so that the students who attend Nathan Hale will have the opportunity to read widely and to learn correct usage in writing and speaking. The foreign language department, headed by Alden Smith, has the same aims for all students enrolled in Spanish, French, and Latin. -I .lennye Ables Helen Ackley Charles Angeletti Donna Baker Vinita Ballard Maxine Bolt Betty Bowman Judith Burton Glenn Chowins Norma Dobson , Bruce DoRemus Rosalie Dunham Fred Duvall J Paul Dykes Richard Elliston , Hazel Elsea Janet Elson Loyal Farmer J 'O Kaye F roman H. .l. CLASSES Senior Class Activities CLASS OFFICERS: Roger Van Horn, Presidentg Mr. Petty, Sponsorg Phil Place, Vice-Presidentg Tere Tanner Secre tary Bill Tarpley, Treasurer. Widi the cookout at McClure Park the Senior Class activity program got off to a hilarious start. The 'cGroacliest of the Groadsl' was the theme of the day. Prizes Went to Karen Denton and Roger Van Horn, and Dwayne Beck who arrived on a donkey. The next event was the class play uRebeccan which drew most favorable comment and large crowds. The Senior Class also participated in the all-school Christmas dance. With the first Wann days of the spring, graduation seemed much closer and prepara- tions for the final program were started. The Vespers were planned for the evening of May 20th at the Boston Avenue Methodist Church with Rev. Curtis W. V. Junker as speaker. Highlighting the final fling of course was the banquet and senior prom held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Mayo Hotel on the evening of May 26th. Monday morning, bright and early, the seniors gathered to breakfast together at Bordens in Sheridan Village and then went en masse to rehearsal. The climax to thirteen years of schooling came on May 28th in the First Baptist Church. The speaker for Hale's second graduating class was Dr. Stephen Romine of the University of Colorado. The annual cook-out held at McClure Park on October 7, gave the energetic members of this class an opportunity for fun and entertainment. A few weeks later rehearsals began for the play, Flight Into Danger, which was presented on November 16 and 18. The Juniors also helped in planning the all-school Christmas dance, which was held on December 16. In February with almost two-thirds of their high school days past, the Juniors experienced a new thrill when they ordered their Senior rings. In May they elected the officers who will lead them as Seniors. The first social event for the class was the cook-out on Saturday, October 11-, at McClure Park. The Sophomores also joined wholeheartedly in the selling of tickets, and in the decorating for the all-school Christmas dance, which was held in the cafeteria on Saturday, December 16. Another highlight of the yearis activities was the class play, 4'Ask Any Cirlf' pre- sented on March 2 and March 3 to appreciative audiences. During the 1961-1962 school year the Nathan Hale Student Council sponsored many activities. The biggest of these activities was hosting the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils, annual convention. This convention, held at Hale November 30 through December 2, was attended by approximately 500 delegates and sponsors from student councils all over the state. Nathan Hale had been elected the O.A.S.C. Secretary-Host school at the previous convention. ln the spring of 1961, Suzanne Sanders was elected to the office of state secretary, and Wally Love was elected state treasurer. Hosting the convention involved placing the 400 delegates in the homes of Rangers, making motel accommodations for the sponsors, collecting souvenirs from various commercial interprises for the guests, arranging for the lunches and dinners for the delegates which included a banquet and ball, arranging transportation in Tulsa for delegates and planning the discussion groups and general assemblies. For this project the Nathan Hale Student Council received national recognition and state-wide applause. Another project in which the Hale Council was active is the Tulsa lnter-School Student Council in which it held the office of secretary. ln February the entire Hale council attended the City Student Council Convention at Tulsa University. v Activity Program Our American Field Service program is sponsored by the student council. The funds necessary to send an American student abroad and to bring a foreign student to Hale were raised in one week. Foreign understanding was given another boost in a program called Living Let- ters. Under this program Hale exchanged tape recordings with a high school in Cambodia. The tapes are made in French and consisted of information about the two schools, the country of Cambodia, and the state of Oklahoma. Each month the council held Senior Boy-and-Girl-of-the-Month elections. The purpose of this activity is to promote a high scholastic level in the school. The student telephone directory, Hale,s Bells, is sponsored by the council each year. St. Patrick's Day was celebrated by a Shamrock Snack in the cafeteria before school. At the snack the students enjoyed a breakfast consisting of doughnuts and milk or coffee, and elected a St. Patrick. Two sock hops were sponsored by the student council. One followed the Hale vs. McLain football game, and the other was a money-raising project for AFS. Nathan Hale is great. I am very proud that I was your Exchange this past year. From the education to the sports and the school spirit, Hale is a success. The people meant a lot to me more than anything else. To all of you my friends, even those that they just smile at me in the hall, I will never forget you. Maria Stini Visiting a country as an A.F.S.'er does not mean being a tourist, there just to look at the sights, but rather it means living with the people, coming to know them and to love them and, therefore, coming to understand them. This understanding and love were the greatest treasure that I brought back from my summer in Germany. It is the personal relationship that is built up between the ex- changee and the host family which gives the A.F.S. program its vitality and which makes it such an effective organization, Pete Skinner l26 A.F.S. Program An American Field Service International Schol- arship is an open door which leads to understand- ing and friendship among the peoples of the world. Through this door pass students from more than fifty foreign countries to attend American second- ary schools in more than 1,600 towns for a school- year of study and first-hand experience, and American teen-agers from practically every state to study and live with families abroad-a two- way exchange of seeing and learning. In this way, young citizens of the world learn to recognize and to respect the similarities and differences of those who, though they live in dif- ferent countries, have dreams and efforts similarly directed toward the goal of a peaceful and useful life.
