President - Eugene Murphy Vice-President - James Austin Treasurer - Mr. Pipitone Secretary - Ellen Reynolds Adviser - Mr. Stevenson The Haldane Concert Orchestra of twenty-five pieces is a growing young organ- ization of string and instrumental players who specialize in playing concert and symphonic type music. The orchestra practices third period and Wednesday evening. It will make its first public appearance of the year at the Commencement exercises. The Haldane Concert Band of forty-three pieces will close a successful season by playing at the Commencement exercises. In the seven years of its existence, the band has grown in size and performance. The band appeared this year at football games, Columbus Day parade, basket ball games, assemblies, band concerts minstrel h , s ow, Op- en House, Music Festival, Junior Red Cross rally, Memorial Day parade, and Commence- ment. At the regional contest at Port Chester, the band received the highest award, and it captured first honors also in the State band contest in Amsterdam, which made it eligible to compete for National Honors in New York, and a trip to the World's Fair Last minute news flash - HALDANE BAND TOOK SECOND PLACE IN THE NATIONAL CONTEST! Alexander. It is a club for girls of Junior and Senior classes. As the name implies, this club si nifies loyalty to the school. It renders many valuable to the school, and the megbers are always ready to assist anyone. The members are indicated by blue and white scarfs with the word WLOYALTYW in gold letters. T H E S E R V I C E C L U B The Service Club is a boys' organization that has three main functions. This organization is headed by a Council composed of one member from each home room. The Council elects its own officers. This year the Council supervised the daily distribution of milk to approximately one hundred children. Seventy of these were paid for by the milk fund of the Jun ior Red Cross. The Lions Club sponsored a ball for the benefit of the milk fund. This, added to the amount raised by the club itself, amply paid expenses The Haldane Junior Red Cross were hosts to all the organizations in this dis- trict at a rally on Hay twentieth. Haldane was greatly honored to be selected Junior Red Cross members from the Mahopac Central School, our guests at the May rally T H E N E E D L E C R A F T C L U B The Needlecraft Club, sponsored by Mrs. Murray, is a club for girls who are interested in needlework. It meets every Study Day in room 208, first period. Our project at the present time is s quilt. Various vocations and professions were introduced. Necessary pre- parations for entering these fields, and personality traits which are essential for successful participation in them were investigated. Problems of employers were used as a basis for part of the work. Special projects, such as making costumes for stage productions, and Red Cross flags, were also done at the re- quest of other organizations. Miss Georgia H. Thiel is the c1ub's adviser. Il TH SCIENCE CLUB The purpose of the Science Club is to provide an opportunity for those students who are of a scientific frame of mind to experiment individually and develop their scientific laboratory techniques. The activities of the club are limited to labor- atory experiment. i SECRETARIAL PRACTICE CLUB This is an organization of young people in commercial work, who desire to receive some training in secretarial practice. The members answer the office telephone, file, type, and post. The club is given the responsibility of most of the ditto and mimeograph work of the various activities, includ- ing the typing of copy for the Haldane Flash. The sponsor is Mr. Pipitone. This year's paper was a bigger and, we hope, a better paper than the Weekly of last year. Haldane Glee Club The Haldane Glee Club is an organization of forty seventh and eighth grade girls who enjoy singing. Rehearsals are held on Study Day in the Music Room. During the 1938-1939 season, the Glee Club has made two major appearances, furnishing the music for the Easter Pageant, and producing an operetta entitled Margie Goes Modern for the Haldane May Festival. Haldane Chorus The Haldane Chorus is an organization of seventy-five students of the senior high school - both boys and girls who are ' t - in erested in singing. every Wednesday at both 2:30 and 7:50 o'clock. The quilt is made of round pieces of cotton, hemmed and drawn up, then sewed into blocks that later wil be joined together. The girls who are not working on the quilt work on things of their own, such as tea towels, pot holders, aprons, scarfs, or anything else done by hand. We do not make garments because the Needlecraft club has no machines. Many beautiful pieces of work have been done this year, and Mrs. Murray has kindly offered to award a prize to the i l ki I g r ma ng the most aeticles in our club. In making an arrest, Student Court summons pads are used. The names of witnesses are usually taken, thus insuring a fair trial of the offender as well as providing evidence to show the arrest was just Exceedingly important, then, are the functions of.the Service Club members. It is apparent that their work calls for judgment, tact, and sound patriotism. 1 Haldane Playmakers The Haldane Playmakers is now in the third year of its existence. This year, during the third term, it produced a program of three one act plays. They were 'The Door'. 'A Message from Khufun, and 'The Tenth Wordu. In May, the club gave nGIOW1Hg Painsn, a three-act comedy which had been produced on Broadway. In addi- tion. a Christmas play, 'Why the Chimes Rang', was given in collaboration with the Haldane Chorus for the Christmas assembly program. HThe Boorn was repeated at Peekskill High School on the English Field Day. Membership in the Playmakers is won only by taking part in the various activ- ities of the club. Members of the club not only act, but also build scenery, ar- range lights. work on costumes, act as prompters and property masters, sell tickets, act as ushers, and carry on advertising. The officers for 1958-1959 are: President, Alison Farquharsong Vice-President, Ray Adamsg Secretary, Marie Reilley. The organization is under the general direction of Richard Decker. The stage- craft activities are directed by Stanley Cornish, and the costumes are made under the direction of Miss Georgia Thiel. Bachelors' Club Home economics from a boy's point of view is made available through the Bachel- ors' Club. The members believe boys and men have a definite place in the home and should prepare themselves for it. They also have problems of choosing well balanced meals, of simple cookery, and of clothing selection and repair which can be solved only through the homemaking department. The boys were successfulin all their cook- ing, most of which was based on simple meal preparation. Tears were darned, and manners and table setting studied, as was the purchase of boys' clothing. The club was newly organized this year under the direction of Miss Georgia Thiel. The officers were: President, Kurt Kiesbye: Secretary-treasurer, William McCloskey. Nature Club The Nature Club was formed this year in order to present activities that inter- est boys of Junior high school age. George sponsor, and three other boys as leaders of Mosher has acted as assistant to the eight-member patrols. These leaders, in turn, have assistants. An effort is made to give each club member a definite responsibility. Some of this group's activities have been: knot tying, first aid, safety work, nature hikes, tracking, nature collections, Debate Club The Debate Club meets the second period had any formal debates. Archery Club Lovers of the out-of-doors, exponents of the ancient art of Robin Hood, experts of the green are the members of the Archery Club. During the spring and fall they may be found on the archery range enjoying this ancient sport. During the winter they will be found in the shop, repairing bows and arrows or constructing equipment. Officers of the club are: President, Kenneth Phillipsg Secretary, Dorothy Reilleyg Sponsor, Hiss Starr. Putnam Youth Club The Putnam Youth Club is a Haldane Central School organization established for the purpose of holding dances for members and guests once or twice a month in the school auditorium. Any Haldane student from the ninth to the twelfth year of high school, or any graduate of Haldane since 1956 may become a member of this organiz- tion upon approval of the membership committee. Thus tomorrow's graduate has an opportunity to learn of the problems ahead of him from those who have gone before him, and the recent graduate is permitted to keep his contact with the school during the first years when he is 'on his ownn. Miss Frances Starr is sponsor. Other teachers, parents, and Janitors have helped to make the dances a success.
