Strakay Little, R.N. To Mary A. Strakay, (in private life, Mrs. John Little), we, the Class of 1952, dedicate our yearbook. Her patient efforts have taught us to appreciate the true definition of health, ' ' That quality which renders an individual fit to live best and serve most . Charles E. Price, M.D. Medical Director jrn rppreciation Martha M. Cunningham R.N., B.S. Director of Nurses It has given me much satisfaction to watch each of you grow and develop from novices in the Nursing Profession into understanding and capable Nurses. Each of you have many good qualities. Your duty is to continue making the best use of these qualities. Do not try to re-make yourselves but make the best of what talents God has given you. You will now spin your own fates, good or evil, never to be undone. Failures may be met along your destined paths. Remember then that to have failed is to have striven, and to have striven is to have grown. A small part of me goes with each of you. I wish it to be as a spark, and help light your way to success, contentment, and happiness. Ardrninid tra lion Martha M. Cunningham, R.N., B.S DIRECTOR OF NURSES Anne M. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping, and all family affairs com- ing to my knowledge in the practice of my profession. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care. 28 f- robie 30 2). aze (J )ici rJLlttie tidier f- artu 6mO r jfurdina Jli rills illle I remember the thrills of nurses training: the awe with which I first re- garded the drab red brick building with its iron fence, its iron-barred windows — the long cold halls inside and the colder greens of the room which was to be mine. The greatest thrill of that first day was the location of the window in my room; it overlooked the hospital accident ward entrance and provided ample thrilling sights for any probie. Soon there was the thrill of being ushered through the hospital and seeing our future place of duty, of being caught momentarily in the busy rush of those who were caring for the sick, and the thrilling realization that one day we would be a part of this scheme. I shall never forget the thrill of being in uniform for the first time: the baggy smocks, black shoes and stockings looked more like something from the dim past, but to us they were ' uniform ' and therefore afforded a thrill we shall never forget. Classes were thrilling. The study of the chemical makeup of the body, its physical structure, its needs in sickness and in health, its care, and its treatment when life is gone — all these helped to make our probie period a thrilling study. I remember the thrill of those first days on duty, the joy of being a little cog in a great machine which operates for the welfare of the patients. We got in the way, and each made her own share of mistakes, but all-in-all it was a thrill to be learning hospital routine and on-the-scene care of those who were ill. Those who endured were capped, and what a thrill that was too. The cap stands for all that the nursing profession stands for, and at long last we felt that some day we would be nurses. In any work there must be the thrill of progress. Remember when we progressed to white shoes and stockings, to black bands? Remember the days of adjusting to the operating room routine, and the thrill of seeing a baby born into the world? Remember the first time you were on duty on a department alone? The progress of the patients to me was a thrilling sight: to see a fever subside, a blood pressure slowly rise to normal, a seemingly hopeless case slowly recover, never cease to thrill me. Then there was the daily thrill of coming off duty, and tired from hav- ing done your job well, you thank God for the thrill of being allowed to be a nurse. by BARBARA FOLTZ 33 51 I .
