How well I remember that day. I arrived at 245 North 15th Street, lock, stock and baggage to make my way up the front steps alone. What a hard time I had trying to open that huge front door. (Of course my nervousness had nothing to do with the difficulty what-so-ever.) Once inside the door, I was greeted by the Welcoming Staff, relieved of my luggage and taken into the library to meet the Directress of Nurses. We really crammed a lot of knowledge into our ' lil heads . . . especially between 8-10 p.m. And then came the day we antici- pated, yet dreaded . . . the first day on the wards. Patience is a virtue, isn ' t it. my dear instructors? People stop and stare, it ' s so hard to bear . . . yes, follks, we were the new probies. Yes, we were the tenants of Probie Hail for five months. We had our fun, and we made our share of noise. But we weren ' t always noisy!! No, indeedy ... A golden silent e reigned ovei the entire row every night prior to exams. And then tame the day we lived and prayed for . . . Medi- cal, Surgical, Diet Kitchen and Semi-Private floors, here we come. The corn on the small toe of tm tight loot I owe all to Surgical, while the one on tn kit loot developed whilst traipsing the light fan- tasia on Medical, ably guided by Miss Ray- mond and her Head Nurses, the Misses Eshle- man and McKenna and Mis. Fisher. The lump in my throat dislodged itself after hav- ing witnessed my second paracentesis, and I no longer cringed with tear when I heard a doctor ' s voice say he was going to do a lumbar puncture. Ah!! What a wonderful teacher experience is. She should get a raise. After spending the required amount of time on Medical, 1 soon left the fair department and traveled southward to the fifth floor, FRESHMEN Surgical, where I was welcomed by Mrs. Mar- tin, the Supervisor, and her staff of Head Nurses. Mrs. Sloss, Mrs. Schaeler and Miss McGinley . . . Thoracoplasty . . . Lobectomy . . . Cholecystectomy . . . Herniorrhaphy . . . Gastric Resection . . . everything is found on Surgical. With orientation to the floor and instructions on the pre and post-operative care of patients, I soon found myself feeling as though I knew what I was doing. In due time, I was sent to the Diet Kitchens to work (and gain weight). Flic Misses Pur- tell, Rogers and Joslyn were very patient with all of us and some of the girls even got an opportunity to show what good cooks they really were. Though, personally, it ' s all I can do to boil water without burning it. Upon completion of m Diet Kitchen ex- periences, with band-aids on my fingers to protect the cuts and burns, I staggered to a new department . . . Semi-Private floors . . . Ihe eighth floor being capably run by the Misses Miller and Russell, and the ninth floor stalled by Miss Simpson and her Head Nurses Miss Kegel i e and Miss Rosenquist. Naturally, we met the interns during out course of travels. Many a time we struggled by their side over a venochsis or a cutdown or a redressing carrier. White shoes and stockings here we come. We ' ve successfully completed one year of training and now we ' re JUNIORS. But that didn ' t stop our travels through the hospital; it merely extended them. North- ward bound to Orthopedics, where I finally had an opportunity to autograph a cast, with Miss Teller and Mrs. Heck there to super- vise me, and then downstairs to the seventh floor to learn all about Gynecology from Mrs. Leman. ' Round about this time we were a little suspicious of what was to tome next on our schedule, and that was the dreaded and feared Operating Room. How we ever lived through that first day is beyond me. Oh, my aching back!! But that fear soon wore off, and after four or five weeks we began to feel at home, and were actually able to find the white table by the green shelves behind the gray sink in back of the amphitheater with the guidance of Miss Hervey and Miss Young. After nine weeks of O.R., we were prepared for Obstetrics. Instructed by Miss Deakyne and Miss Davies, we devoted our time to momma and her off-spring. Now we were ready for our black bands, which were awarded for our two years good conduct. Being Seniors, we were granted more pri- vileges, and among them Affiliations. We were given our choice of either three months at Friends Mental Hospital or two months at the Philadelphia Hospital for Contagious Diseases. Which would it be, dimentia prae- cox or scarlet fever? Both hospitals offer beautiful surroundings and a peaceful environment. Those students who affiliated at Muni told stories of their mad excursions up the brick- streets of Philadelphia in the ambulances, and those long journeys up the second floor ramp- way to the wards; while those who affiliated at Friends boast of their ability to handle an irrational patient and their expertness in giv- ing a cold pack under the most difficult cir- cumstances. (Yes, nurse, they ' ve got me here because they think I ' m crazy, but you and I are the only two that know I ' m not. Hm- m-m-m-m? -?) Alter Affiliations, we traipsed back to Ye Okie Alma Mater to resume our studies in our own classrooms and to grasp an opportunity to make use of that extra late leave every week granted only to Seniors. Many of our nights during our Senior year were spent working on the Private Floors with either Miss Martelonis, Miss Jones or Miss Connors to greet us with a cheery good morning bright and early every morn, and with the Misses Fluck, Fritz and Strock keep- ing the vigil over us throughout the night. The nights were sometimes long and dragged out, and our eyes would have a tendency to droop a little and our head tend to fall to one side in a light doze, but that was all absent on the cold nights when the north wind would howl around the west corner of the building, banging the doors, flapping the window shades, and upsetting the flowers in tit i £ Vr v the dark, dismal corridors; and above all awakening the patients, who were sent back to Dreamland with the aid of a little red or yellow capsule. We accumulated some helpful experience in the Out-Patient Department . . . Over in the Clinics with Miss Fine: draping patients. assisting the doctors and medical students with examinations, listening to their prob- lems and tales of woe (as il 1 didn ' t have enough on my mind) and so referring them back to clinic in another week or so. [wo weeks were spent working in the Admission Room under Mrs. Bringhurst (who shared honors with Mr. Anthony. Now my probem is ... ) and occasionally slipping over to the Accident Ward to witness or to assist with some unusual case brought in. Maybe it would be a simple stab wound through the heart or a bi-chloride of mercury poisoning or slashed wrists or maybe just a plain D.O.A. In Life is never dull in Accident Ward, though sometimes life ends here, and on certain • occasions life begins there. Another part of our Senior year was spent working on Pediatrics, where Miss Elwell taught us the care and feeding of children and many of us learned by experience that you never prop a baby ' s bottle when feed- ing. (Didn ' t I?) For baby ' s pause that re- freshes, those two weeks we spent in Formula Room preparing tidbits for the little ones were fun. Sometimes, as usual, we made an excessive amount of noise, and the familiar sign would be put up on the bulletin board by one of the dietitians . . . A woman ' s charm is not her beauty but her voice. Silence reigned again . . . Was that a pin you just dropped?? . . . Crash!! . . . Oopsll . . . Just a few minutes while I get a dust pan and brush. Well kiddies, what ' ll it be today?? Similac or Dextri-Maltose? Both are good. For three months I was doing things in a small way and hearing lots of small talk . . . 1 wants to go home . . . Where ' s my mommy? ... I want my mommy . . . Read me a story . . . Don ' t give me that needle . . . But I don ' t want to eat that . . . My mommy doesn ' t make me eat that at home . . . What are you doing that for nurse? . . . Leave the lights on, don ' t turn them off ... J don ' t want to go to bed yet . . . I want some candy . . . Can I have a doll}? . . . Nurse, I gotta ... I wants to color in that there book he ' s got over there, and anyway, it ' s mine ... I want an orange, and can I have a drink of water and a glass of chocolate milk, and a taffy and some cookies . . . Most Popular Mai McCaughn 19 CLASS SPONSDR With Mrs. Bunt as the Class Sponsor, what Senior Class wouldn ' t have a busy year? What with the Card Party, the Peach Festival, the Banquet given in honor ol the preceding graduating class and above all the Christmas Dance held in Klahr Auditorium which kept every one on the run for many weeks prior to the dance (and even kept some running tor weeks after the dance.) But the result of all the hard labor was well worth the time and energy spent. What with the familiar sound of voices and shouting outside the door of room No. 349. and the sound of pans clattering, bread wrappers being removed and money being dropped inside the cash register, one could almost tell without further questioning, that Goebleman ' s Grocery Store had re-opened for the sea- son under the direction of Mr. Goebleman ' s personal representative, Jennie March. Each night would find Jennie there doing her bit to keep business roll- ing as usual, and each day would find her beating the path to her competitor ' s door looking for specials that she could offer her customers. How many times a week that familiar Help Wanted sign used to go up, especially just on the night you wanted to go to the movies or had something extra special planned. To all underclassmen, who are looking for a class advisor, we heartily recommend Miss Meehan, who so capably filled in for Mrs. Bunt when she left. He was a revered pill dispatcher, a skilled wielder of the blade, an interpreter of the foreign noises heard through the stethoscope, or the first assistant to the bird with the long legs. Time passed, and the word became deeper and fuller in mean- ing. He was also our teacher, friend, and adviser in both pro- fessional and non-professional matters. We learned to know him as a master of his art, a versatile personality, and a true friend. To him we humbly dedicate the 1946 Vigil; for without his smile of confidence when we were suffering from an excess of synovial fluid in the patellar area, without his nod of certainty in a tense moment, without his kind explanations of pathological condi- tions, without th e joke exchanged at the desk, we certainly would have found the journey toward our goal almost beyond our reach.
