A challenge which makes men clench fists and gives women a grim sense of determination and responsibility. We, the American Nurse, with an increased determination and a renewed respon- sibility have prepared to accept that challenge. By God ' s Grace and with His Help we pray that our hands might be used to alleviate suffering, our lips to bring words of cheer, our spirits to mend broken hearts, and, if necessary, our lives be fully given so that the crashing ring of today ' s wars might be replaced in tomorrows dawning by the clear sweet clarion call of peace. CALHOUN LYLE Dedication As time flies on its eternal and widespread wings and the class of ' 45 slowly begins to unfold its own, we halt on the threshold of the future, ponder for a moment and gaze backwards. There it stands — our Hahnemann. It holds for us many memories, the most precious of which is that of Miss Maude E. Calhoun Lyle, our former dean. With the greatest re- spect we wish to dedicate our book, the Vigil, to her. Our garden of memories is sweeter and richer because of the true inspiration and high ideals which came to us through her. From her sympathy and understanding, as well as example, we were able to catch a glimpse of true nursing. She left to us as a heritage the memory of true leadership, honor, unselfish loyalty and undying spirit. And when the stream that overflowed the soul was passed away, a consciousness remained that it had deposited upon the silent shores of memory, images and precious thought that shall not die and cannot be destroyed. Wordsworth RENA D. MOORE Acting Director of Nurses Shortly following our entrance into Hahnemann we were intro- duced to the new Director of Pedagogy, Miss Rena D. Moore. Through our )ears here she rose from that position to Associate Director, and upon the death of our Dean. Miss L le, became Acting Director. This position, assumed during the wartime situation, was more than adequately fulfilled by her sound judgment and stability. In following years we will remember that which she so profoundly taught us — tolerance, foresight, and responsibility. It is with deep sorrow thai this class says farewell to one who has so befriended us. The Medical Director wishes to con- gratulate the Class of 1945 on their high standard of work during the past year and their ability to work under stress when the case demanded it. If it were not for the splendid work of the student nurse in the hospital, we could not under any cir- cumstances carry on our work in a normal manner. I hope those of you who are going into the armed services will bring back to the Medical Director very soon a lock of hair from Hitler and Hirohito. I wish all of you happiness and pros- perity R. W. Upon entering the profession of nurs- ing, you will find many women who are capable, loyal, human and unselfish, for this service to mankind demands such. The ambition to excel in your nursing technique, along with a sympathetic under- standing of the needs of your patients, yvhen combined with the development of the heart as well as the brain, will insure your attainment of the highest in the fine art of nursing. our nursing education here at Hahne- mann has been a valuable preparation for life. AND 16 As you alight at any of these — our private floors — you are instantly aware of quietness, subdued lighting and an easy efficient manner with which all cases are handled under the guidance of the Misses T. Marcelonis. G. Connors, and E. Jones. SEMI-PRIVATE— 8th BROAD and 9th Some say these are the busiest halls in the hospital, which may well be true. For here it is that we find all types of cases. Surgery and medicine combine to keep Miss F. Simpson and Mrs. H. Pigozzi con- stantly on the alert. ORTHOPEDICS The home of the Bradford frame and Buck ' s extension to say nothing of the wheelchair, crutch, and cast. It is on this department that we find Miss K. Teller ever anxious to introduce some new ortho- pedic term into our nursing vocabulary . CENTRAL SUPPLY ROOM In an emergency this is where we come for trays, solutions, needles, syringes, and no end of other sterile articles. On Mrs. C. Cleaver, who ever checks and rechecks to keep these things sterile and complete, our entire hospital depends. PEDIATRICS Children. We love them, though some- times we wonder after so main for so long on Pediatrics. But despite frequent tears and cries for mother, these kiddies seem to enjoy their stay on seventh floor. The nurses do, too . . . ask Miss M. Elwell. GYNOCOLOGY Under the guiding hands of Mrs. C. Le- man and Miss M. Parker we soon came to know the gyn procedures backwards and forwards. After spending several weeks on this department one learns the finale of this woman ' s world! MEDICAL At this favorite abode of the oxygen tent and mask we find Mrs. R. Bunt and Misses J. Eshleman, M. Hoover, and Mrs. B. Jenkins heading a smoothly run medical department. Those of us with a love for medicine find this a busy but all engross- ing place. SURGICAL Did someone say emergency ? If that ' s the case we have the Misses V. Lowe, J. Dodson, E. Mirto, F. Gray, and E. McGin- ley to direct the student action that will see the patient safeb into the operating room before he realizes he ' s in the hospital. OBSTETRICS Where life begins there ' s bound to be excitement and Hahnemann ' s OBS depart- ment is no exception. Here the main ques- tion is when? The Misses H. Deakyne, M. Davies, and H. Weisensale teach us the principles behind the correct answer. The rest is up to you . . . and nature. OPERATING ROOM In spite of that empty feeling that first morning we cross the 0. R. threshold many claim this, their first love at Hahne- mann. Scrubbing takes on a new meaning under the watchful eyes of the Misses B. Hervey, P. Young, and M. Hicks. OUT-PATIENT DEPARTMENTS Much experience comes to us ( especially the Jersey ites! under Mrs. K. Bringhurst who rules Admission Room. When work- ing in the out-patient clinics we receive enlightening and valuable information from Miss S. Fine. NIGHT SUPERVISORS The dark but not always quiet nights of our institution are always under control when ruled by the 7-7 staff lead by Misses C. Reynolds. E. Pilne) . and A. SeKellick. This club is a Catho- lic organization; however, membership is not limited to only those of the Catholic faith. At the meetings of this club, every two weeks, a variety of lec- tures, debates, discussions, dances, and other social activities which stimulate interest and anticipation are presented. The more immediate aims of the Newman Club are to inspire nursing and to make religion a necessary part of it. as well as being instructional and entertaining. FELLOWSHIP 59 I m GL€G CLUB We are proud of our glee club, under the efficient leadership of Miss E. Morgan, for it symbolized cooperation, watchfulness and obedience of mind. Each year it is composed of different members as the new pre-clinical class enters Hahnemann. This musical organization, delightfully feminine, of course, not only claims to have a well rounded repertoire but practices faith- fully every week so that it ma) add to the distinction of the school. The members graciously contribute their voices on Christmas Eve when they sing carols through the corridors of the hospital in a modest effort to bring cheer and add a thought of home for those who are ill. We, who were on duty those nights, know how much gladness they bring even to our hearts. We have not had many other opportunities to see them as a body, but we have listened to them during their hourly rehearsals and heard the rich harmom of their voices.
