Treasurer Harry Hoch .............,.......................... Pres1dent The finger of Time has written for years the history of many classes. Now, Time is about to inscribe another name-The Class of 1942. i ln September, 1939, we entered the Hagerstown High School. As silly little sophs, we felt very strange and slightly bewildered. During the first months We were still identified by our former junior high schools, but as this feeling of competition lessened, we grew more con- fident and devoted our energies to all channels of our new surroundings, and not in vain. Be- fore we knew it, we were Seniors. Now an accepted feature of H. H. S., we began to distinguish ourselves. In athletics, luniors were found on the football, fieldball, soccer, basketball, track, and baseball teams. The Dramatic club production, Kind Lady, boasted a lunior in the title role with four others of us in the cast. The Glee Club also drew its talent mainly from the lunior class, and we belonged to or held offices in thirteen other school organizations. Here we pause because we are loathe to record the last lines of the class of '42. Although the sky was clear as the year began, on December seventh the storm broke. War clouds over- shadowed all school activities, many of which were canceled. We had no Glee Club Op- eretta, no Field Dayg the baseball schedule was miserably broken up, school curricula were altered to meet the changing conditions, rationing broke up class schedules,-civilian defense activities predominated. So with commencement overshadowed by an uncertain Future, the class of 1942 closes its record with the hope that each member will fulfill his individual destiny. 1141 The Hezkleelite 1942 IAMES R. All the mystic splendor and magic of the desert glistened under the vast cold fire of an Eastern moon. Rapidly I unfastened and released my parachute. The distant throb, throb of the tomtoms and the soft, sensuous music of a lute drew me on over the golden sand, to what adventure I knew not. U In the shadowy distance the figure of a man slowly approached, the drapery of his robes flowing from his head and shoulders. Only his burning, piercing eyes, half hidden under the folds of his turban, seemed alive. In his left hand he clutched a bag. Into this he thrust his right hand and then withdrew it, allowing myriads of tiny grains to fall back into their resting place. Then I knew-he was a sand-diviner, a soothsayer, a man of peace and not a sentinel watching for paratroopers. Evincing neither surprise nor curiosity, he spoke, These grains of sand can reveal your future. His low, mysterious voice chilled me to the bone. Hypnotically I nodded. My classmates' also? Again he opened the bag, buried his sinewy fingers into its contents, and poured a flood of golden sand at my feet. Your classmates' also, my friend. Break not the silence, watch, and you shall see many things as yet unhappened. l39l The Hei.1'keli te 1 942 SENIOR PROPH ECY qflontinuedy I Watched, breathless and excited, as the cool breeze stirred the sand into a million ripples and whirled it around and around .... As the suffocating smell of ether seemed to curl around my nostrils, I saw the gleaming white corridor of a hospital. A crisp voice rang out, Dr, Ditto, please consult Dr. Conrad in surgery. . . . Dr. Ditto, please consult Dr. Conrad in surgery. .. . Nurses Bel. and Wiebel please relieve Nurses Dodd and Byers in emer- gency. . . . As this faded into the long white corridor, I found myself in the back of a large auditorium listening to the thud of a gavel. The president, Elizabeth Prather, arose. This afternoon the program committee of the Women's Club, consisting of Beverly Fultz, Peggy Miller, Murray Baechtel, and Elizabeth Koliopulos, has succeeded in getting the noted author, Mr. Regis Allen, as our speaker. Miss Houser, Miss Couchman, Miss French, and Miss Hum- richouse of the Hagerstown High School faculty are our guests today. Next week our speaker will be Miss Bonnie Stahl, librarian at the Washington County Library. And now it gives me great pleasure to introduce to you Mr. Regis Allen. . . . The roar of applause seemed to change into the staccato beat of many typewriters and I looked up in astonishment to face an office door on which was painted: Rambo and Guth, Civil and Electrical Engineers. A neatly dressed young lady appraoched me, How do you do, Sir. I'm Miss Bishop, the receptionist. Go right in, Mr. Rambo is expecting you. Entering the spacious office, I heard these words: That's all the dictation now, Miss Pheil. Please send these letters to Miss Custer to type, and don't let me forget I have a dinner engagement with President Lowry of the International Chem- ical Corporation. As the secretary opened the door to the outer office, round after round of applause greeted my ears. My companion nudged me, and as I looked up, I became aware of the paper I held in my hand- Paul Mattson, director of R. C. A., presents Radio City's Music Hall Concert for Allied Relief, featuring Miss Matilda Over, sopranog Robert Lynn, concert pianist, Asher Edleman, violinistg with the N. B. C. Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Harshman. The orchestra has been augmented by lames Mullendore, concert master, with Franklin Herrmann, Sam Murray, Harry Hoch, and William Myers leading the brasses. Another sharp nudge brought me to attention, as a voice beside me said, Look, there's Miss Newman. Her latest book is just off the press. David Cottingham did the illustrations for it. Theron Rinehart, the producer, already has the screen rights and he's going to star either Peggy Geary or Patricia Payette. lack Grossman signed his contract last week. Mlle. Parks lgfslbeen contracted for the costuming. All they need for a perfect picture is 'Coiffure by Mc- e land.' I turned in surprise to see who my neighbor was who seemed so well acquainted with these celebrities. Of course, who else could it be but Adele Lyon, the Society editor of the New York Times. It was her friend, Gayl Gerber, with the aid of Lucy Smith, the translator, who made such a brilliant report about the American troops in Australia. I think she mentioned Lieut. Major Robert Carpenter and Major Edward Bachtel, or was it lack Love. Anyway, it sounded like our old football team. The lights were growing dim now and in any moment the conductor would-but the vision faded away, and I found myself staring at the golden sand at my feet. Is there no more, Great Wise One, I asked? Silence, he commanded in a scournful voice, and proceeded to stir the sand. The music of the tomtoms seemed to fade away and then grew louder and faster until it seemed that the player must collapse. I glanced around in astonishment as a voice from a loudspeaker said, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Rainbow Room of the Waldorf Astoria brings you Robert Iones and his famous Sophisti-cats, featuring Iohnny Sommer on the drums. Vocal renditions are those of lovely Peggy Zeigler. Before we begin our program, We're going to put the spot- light on some of our illustrious guests here tonight. In the far cormer. . . I gulped as the spotlight came to rest on me. The light was blinding and when I opened my eyes I discovered myself lying in a heap on the sandy the sun was beating down on me. A voice I recognized as that of my squadron leader was saying, He'll be all right. He must have lost conscious- ness when we bailed out. . . . A. H. It seems hardly any time since we en- tered this school as bewildered, subdued sophomores. We luniors have kept up the excellent standards set by us as sophomores. Our names glisten like stars on the distinguished honor and honor roll lists, on the school varsity teams, and in the glee club and orchestra. We were very active in the French, History, and Audio Visual Service Clubs. We shone in all of the Dramatic Club programs and all but three of the Life Begins at Sixteen cast were of the class of '43. The H. W. N. W. boasts of its many junior staff members and their work. Our friendly spirit of cooperation was displayed by the way we attended the games and dances, sold tickets for lectures and plays, and by the way we responded to the H. W. N. W. and Heiskelite sales campaigns. With this spirit, plus our vim, vigor, and Vitality, We can say without faltering that We will challenge all former records. S., the new Sophomore Class became an integral part of school life, entering enthusiastically into all activities, they rapidly acclimated themselves to their strange surroundings, rolled up their sleeves, and went to work. To begin with, the Sophs had an unusually large turn-out for football this year, in fact, most of the squad was composed of the newcomers. Though inexperienced, they displayed admirable sportsmanship and determination, being largely responsible for the varsity's suc- cesses. lournalism provided a deep interest for the more literary second-termers, with all staffs of the H. W. N. W. liberally represented by Sophomores. In addition to generally high scholastic standards, the youngest class of the school coop- erated with zeal in most of the social, service, and educational clubs, the Orchestra, Band, and Glee Club especially show the influence of sophomoric talents. With this year of achievement behind them, the Sophomore Class eagerly looks forward to the dignity of luniors, the ultimate majesty of Seniors, confident that, with their first year before them as an example, theirs will be a truly outstanding high school career. l48l The Ifeiyleelite 1 94 2 From Row Row Row Row l From Row Row lett to right-Row I:-R. The injury nemesis hit the team hard again in 1941 with Palkovitz, Bachtell, Miller, and Stubitts out of the line-up much of the time. To open the season, the Maroon and Gray eleven ran amuck against the formidable DeVitt Prep club of Washington, D. C., losing 13 to 6. They stormed over Harpers Ferry the next week, 40 to 6, at the Municipal Stadium, site of five night games. Revenging its humiliating 1940 defeat at the hands of Charles Town, the Hubs lashed the Purple Panthers 27 to 6. Alle- gany, with its T formation, sank the Semlerites 20 to 12 in the first league contest. Martins- burg and Handley fell before the prowess of the Maroon and Gray eleven, 12 to 0 and 12 to 7, respectively, in C. V. A. L. games. Traveling to Cumberland, they dropped a game to Fort Hill, 19 to 6. The Quincy Orphanage team lost to the Hubs, 20 to 6, on the Potomac Avenue gridiron. Rounding out the season, the H. H. S. team hung a defeat on the Waynesboro eleven in Waynesboro 13 to 0. A 1541 The Ifeiskelite 1942 FIELDBALL ln her third year at Hagerstown High, Mrs. Coleman produced one of the finest teams in Hagerstown's fieldball history. i In September, a call for the first candidates of he fieldball squad was issued. Thirty girls responded, and from this group eighteen of the most promising were chosen. These eventually developed into one of the fastest and most skillful fieldsquads in the history of Hagerstown High School athletics. Their record shows an undefeated, untied, and unscored-upon team. Graduation claims Barnes and Houser but several sophomores have found places in the line-up. A winning team is expected next year. 'l55l The Hezkleelz'te 1942 BOYS' BASKETBALL The Maroon and Gray basketeers played a sixteen-game schedule during the 1941-42 season, and managed to win only three of the total. Their playing was quite a let-down follow- ing the brilliant campaigns of the two previous seasons. The locals hit their high spo' in the first Greenbelt High game, as they defeated those lads, 33 to 28. They, perhaps, turned in their most dismal effort against Fort Hill on the Po- tomac Avenue court, the Sentinels won in a C. V. A. L. contest, 42-21. The Maroon and Gray quintet had height aplenty but didn't seem to be able to cash in on it. Love, Young, Bachtell, Bruce, and Carpenter were all six feet or over. Bachtell pulled down scoring honors with 118 points in 12 tilts. His game average for the campaign was 9.8 points. Hershey was second in swing with 97 points in sixteen games. His average was 6.06 points per contest. Opponents H. H. S. Opponents H. H. S. From this display of good material twenty of the most outstanding were selected for the final squad. Zone defense played a great part in the games, and during the season the Hagerstown Girls' Varsity learned to use it effectively and efficiently. Since there are only two seniors, Houser and Barnes, who will be lost by graduation, the team should have a strong foundation upon which to build next year's team. Both the team and the coach deserve credit for their achievement. H. H. S. Hagerstown placed third in the twenty-fifth annual University of Maryland Field Day, May 2, at College Park. Towson and Bel Air placed ahead of the Hubs in the inter-scholastic division. Day In The Sun, a three-act comedy written by Edward Sammis and Ernest Heyn, opens with a dash of murder, a pinch of suspense, and a rather general amount of laughter. Much of the success of the play may be attributed to the excellent characterizations by Harold Fore and Peggy Zeigler in the leading roles. The supporting cast, also, added greatly to the delightful presentation of the play. Day In The Sun was directed by Miss Innes Boyer and Miss Mildred Keirn. The meetings, which were held every second Friday in the month consisted of contests, speakers, and outings. These proved interesting and beneficial to both members and visitors. Immediately following the Christmas vacation the Club undertook the task of selling National Defense Stamps. Through the Willing cooperation of the student body, the club sold several thousand dollars worth of stamps.
