E SlIE5N1INDIIR BRASS SlENlOR CLASS Randolph Mason Rhoda Finn Betty Plack Marcia Hart President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer O History After a summer of doubt and dread co-mingled with anticipation, we, as the sophomore class of 1937, marched timidly up the steps of Hagerstown High School. After considerable hesitation about entering the clubs, athletics, musical organi- zations, newspaper work, and other activities open to us, we finally decided to participate in them. As the year wore on, we decided that we were not really so unimportant as we had thought, and began to feel that we were, after all, a very necessary part of the school. The sophomore chorus was outstanding in the glee club production, Hooray for Romance. At the end of the year, most of us were feeling quite self-satisfied with our new-found prestige. In the fall we came to school with anticipation for the fun we knew we would have. Now we were juniors and were in a position to look haughtily down on the new group, the sophomores. Had we ever been sophomores as timid as they? It seemed incredible. Still looking with awe on the senior class, we dreamed of the day when we would be in that high and mighty position. After we gained our long-awaited place as seniors, we were happy to accept the responsibilities and privileges. During this year, we took a more than usual interest in the activities of the school. We were well represented in athletics, dramatics, the glee club, orchestra, and practically every other organization of the school. The senior class play, What A Life, was a great success, as were all the other productions of the year. As we relinquish our position to the oncoming juniors, we challenge them to surpass us in bringing honor to Hagerstown High School. UNIOR CLASS Andrew Schnebly Harold Hart Delores Werking Agnes Carnochan President Vice-President Secretory Treasurer 0 History Another school year has come to a close and we are at the threshold of senior- ity. When we entered Hagerstown High School two years ago as sophomores, our aim was to achieve a creditable record both in scholastic honors and extra- curricular contributions. The class feels that it has made outstanding strides toward its objective. The scholastic progress of the group will be confirmed by a glance at the credits it has made. The extra-curricular work is very evident by the class representation in the glee club production of last year, Tune ln, and in this year's production The Lucky Jade. A view of the band, clad in its outstanding maroon and gray uniforms, would show a remarkable number of juniors. Many talented individuals of this class gave a good performance in the ulitterbug Lunatics of l94O. Our class has well upheld the glorious tradition of the school by its splendid participation in social and athletic activities of the year. It is with some feeling of regret that we surrended the title of luniors. However, we realize that we must forge ahead and be even better as seniors that we have been as juniors. We challenge our successors not only to uphold our aims directed at greater scholastic and extra-curricular activities, but also to raise the glorious standards of the junior class to enviable heights never before attained. Another class of frightened newcomers has become a class of jolly juniors. In the course of one year as sophomores we have set a record of which we are proud. In every phase of school activity the sophomore class contributed more than its share of talent. In the production, The Lucky Iade, the Sophomore chorus was a leading factor. In the orchestra, our musicians played an outstanding role. Who aided in filling the depleted squads, and who showed the seniors the best time at All High School Night ? The sophomores did! In all clubs and organizations for which we were eligible, we were splendidly represented, which showed the kind of spirit we had in our class. Our scholastic record has been one of which we are doubly proud. A glance at the Honor Roll and the Distinguished Honor Roll will be sufficient proof of the statement. For the first time in the history of the Heiskelite, there were members of the sophomore class on the staff. Truthfully, the class is proud to be so well repre- sented in a senior publication. This is our last chance to extend our congratulations to our upper classmen. We thank you, seniors, for your fine contributions to school life. In the future, we shall strive to uphold the fine record you have established. The true Hagerstown High School spirit is imbued in the class of '42, and we firmly resolve to accomplish much not only for the good of the class, but also for the good of the entire school. We are proud of our past achievements, and we are anxiously awaiting to improve our record in the future. The Heirleelite 1 9 4 0 -40- 1 l l Row Row Row Row Row Row Row I--B. Townshend, I. Lehman, H. Football Hagerstown High, with almost a veteran team, took its place on the gridiron to make a place and a name for itself in the '39 football season. On September 23, our eleven opened the season with a victory from Harpers Ferry by a score of 26-12. The following week our team defeated the Front Royal aggregation by a 6-O score. The season was off with a bang, but spirits fell when Fort Hill sent us back to the lockers with a defeat, the final tally was 21-12. Hopes and actions declined more than ever when our second defeat was reg- isteredg Allegheny won with 12 points to our 7. We then met Charles Town and regained that lost spirit. The game ended with Hagerstown 14, Charles Town 7. Martinsburg, our next opponent, did not register a score while our eleven went over the goal line for 32 points. Handley also swayed under our power, and the fourth period ended with Hand- ley 6, Hagerstown 14. On Armistice Day, Hanover also bowed to our eleven as we piled up a total of 14 points to Hanover's 6. With a fine turnout, high spirits, a fighting team, a splendid band, and a windy day, our eleven entered the contest with the Waynesboro team. Both teams were fighting and both offense and defense were near perfection, but under strain and tough breaks we yielded to Waynesboro. The final score was 8-O. Thus our season ended with three defeats and six victories. Hagerstown's total scoring for the '39 season was 124 points to their opponents' 73. lones captained this team with much success, while Mr. Semler coached the squads. Graduation claimed Fiery, Daniels, l. Russell, Spessard, Fryer, Grand- staff, leffrey, Stottlemyer, Dehart, lacobs, lones, Foltz, Powell, Shue, and Garrison. 'Ure H3llfk6l1'f6 1 9 4 0 Row I-A. This defeat caused a triple tie in the county with Boons- boro, Clear Spring, and Hagerstown. The home team drew Clear Spring in the play-off and was defeated by a score of O-3. The games played and the score for each are as follows: Smithsburg 12-2, Hancock 22-O, Clear Spring 10-7, Williamsport 26-5, Boonsboro 6-8, Clear Spring O-3. Graduation will claim six of the regular players, Marcia Hart, Marie Hose, lune Lowery, Amy Orrick, lane Stickell, and Marjory Willard, but since seven sophomores found places for themselves in the line-up we will expect a winning team next year. To Miss Gompf we offer congratulations for her excellent coaching, and wish that she may train many victorious teams in the future. 'Uwe Hezkleelz'te 1 9 4 0 1461 Soccer Soccer enjoyed a fair season this year. The Maroon and Gray team won three games and lost two. Williamsport won the county championship by virtue ot victory in every league game played. For the first time since soccer was organized many years ago on a state wide scale, there were no Shore or State Championships contest conducted by the state. Gordon Crawford, Warren Dofflemyer, Richard Trovinger, Edward Carr, Charles Hause, and Harold Fram were leading players during the past campaign and will be lost by graduation. Boys' Basketball The Hubs entered the '40 season with very high hopes as four of last year's varsity and plenty of new talent were on hand. For the first game the Maroon and Gray were opposed by Waynesboro. The Hagerstown boys showed plenty of spirit: but in spite of both good offensive and defensive playing, the game was lost by a score of 26-28. During the whole season the same spirit and spunk was shown by the boys. Splendid ball-handling, passing and teamwork were shown and always the oppo- sition could see that flaming spirit of the H. H. S. lads. The spirit of good sports- manship prevailed, and always the rules of playing were observed by the locals and their opponents. The Maroon and Gray quintet enjoyed a fairly successful season winning half of the fourteen games played. They captured third place in the C. V. A. L. team. The most outstanding game was the return game between Waynesboro and Hagerstown in which the Hubs ran away with the game by a score of 37-24. Graduation claims Daniels, Morin, Powell, Morris, Fryer, and Dofflemyer. The schedule was as follows: H H. S. Opponent Opponents H. H. S. Considering the fact that this was a very difficult schedule for a squad with so many newcomers, the girls did a commendable piece of work throughout the entire season. A new type of defense was worked out-zone guarding-and by next year it should prove very effective. Fortunately nearly all the guards will return next fall. The scores for the season's games were as follows: H. H. S. The club has held its meetings every two weeks during the year, and at each meeting a special program was arranged. The topic most discussed during the year was the Strength of the European Countries in the Air. The different types of fighting ships were discussed, and pictures which gave the details of the planes were shown. After Christmas, the club presented a model airplane show which lasted one week. Air- planes were displayed and illustrations of controls, motors, and flight were drawn on the board by members of the club. In February, Mr. Archibald Brown, sales manager of the Fairchild Aircraft Division, spoke to the club about how to enter the aviation field, and answered questions for the members. The club enjoyed a trip to the Hagerstown airport the first of March, where they had their picture taken. Many members took advantage of the opportunity to go up with Mr. Smith in a Waco cabin plane. A system of points was developed by a group in the club, by which the members would be able to earn their Wings, A member had to have a certain number of points to receive his wings, and to get these points, he must take part in the program, keep meteorological records, build model airplanes, plan a program, and participate in other activities. At the end of the year, the Wings will be awarded to the members who have the required points. 7110 I'h'llI'kl'lI.fl? 1 9 4 0 Archery Clulb OFFICERS President ....... ........., I ane Showe Vice-President .... ...........,. Consequently, he spends most of his time in the principal's office. The climax is reached when he is suspended from school after being accused of stealing the school band instruments. Not wishing his heart's interest, Barbara Pearson, to know the reason for his suspension, he tells her he must leave because his uncle out West is dying of tuberculosis.
