The SEJUSQF 1 x, 'T Lk -fr' WE- Published bg TLC Class of '25 ' ,JZ E lg g lk, 43' Frmd X YI-Z3 ?1,,fZi - 1-di... f SUITQLQKQV' FOREWORD After the sun of our life has passed the zenith and is well on its westward journey, we will look back into the balmy days of youth. Days of comradeship, days of laughter and cheer will have all passed with the passing of old friends and comrades. They will bring to us memories, of battles lost and won, of troubles and trials to test our courage, of happiness and unsurmounted joyg in fact, they contain a little of everything which life can hold. Then, too, we will think of the success and failure of our classmates of former days. Making a summary of all these reminis- cences we shall iind that deep down in our hearts, the sweetest memory of all is that of the W. C. H. S. that we have loved. 9425? It is the stuff of which patriotism, duty and honor are made. It is the influence of our Mothers. Years will pass and the world will change, but a Motheris love will never die. Sejusof is lovingly dedicated to our Mothers. Ediforial Sfajf RIFHAIIII I,. JHIINS'l'4lN.,. .. ......,....... ....,...... I f --Dreams Came True We hold these untruths to be enough evidence, that all pupils are not created equal, that they are not given enough rightsg that those not given are:--Less study, more play, the right to sass teachers and play hookey when we feel like itg that we should govern ourselves and also the teachersg that, when the teachers interfere, it is our right, it is our duty, to go on a strike or abolish their rules, and substitute our own, which of course have no principle or solid foundation, but any how are better than none at all. Prunes, indeed, will dictate that the teachers? rulings, such as the demerit system, should be changed for light and unknown causes. All experience has shown that even an animal is not disposed to suffer while we are made suffer- able, Certainly we will not take any back talk from the teachers, or anyone else who tries to upset our form of government. But we demand the right to throw those persons out of the room, and if necessary, to give them a good thrashing. Of course, all of which is uncalled for, because they should let us do as we please. But when a long train of abuses and wallops, all pursuing the same end, evinces a design to reduce us to a small bit of cracker dust, it is our unlawful right, to throw off such blows, run out of the room and provide new clubs and lead brickbats for our future security. Yes, we were green, but it takes green things to grow. The goal seemed far distant and hazy at first. Then as the days went by, we began to possess a bit of knowledge and self confidence, which are the first requisite to great undertakings. Since the most successful enterprises must be organized, a class meeting was called. The following officers were elected, and well did they serve, President, C. L. Stouffer, Vice-President, Josephine Spielmang Secretary, Ida Rowland, Treasurer, Thomas Gordon, Assistant Treasurer, Virginia Shenk. Autumn came. Again we were back at our studies with a grim determina- tion to succeed. Like preceding classes, ours also decreased in number. Some fell by the wayside while others Usteamed aheadf' The biggest event of the year was out first class party which was held in February. It was a joyous meeting of our classmates, a delightful affair in- deed. At a class meeting we selected our class flower, class colors, our motto, and designs for our rings, pins and pennants. We became active in athletics. In the Inter-Class basketball tourna- ment we came out victorious. We were not only represented well in athletics, but we also had a fine representation in music and art. Then came the third mile-stone. The class divided itself into Commercial and Academic sections in accordance with the vocational tendencies of its in- dividual members. During the year a debate was held between the boys and girls, in which the girls won. Due to the withdrawal of our President, whose absence was felt by all, A. jay Schaff was elected to the ofhce. We gave a farewell to the Seniors at the Country Club. It was consider- ed one of the most elaborate farewells ever held in the history of our High School. Now has come the last mile-stone of our High School course. To crown our class with more glory, our football team won the Cumberland Valley Championship. Preparations are now being made for our final Hwindupfi Only too soon willour classmates be separated, and each will take up his duties and start out on lifels great highway to strive for success. LUCILLE BARNER History of the Class of '26 In the fall of 1922 we introduced our banner on the field of combat to that illustrious list, who having conquered Caesar, Shakespeare and their modern contemporaries of the affray, had sought larger fields of triumph. Though we may have been the source of consternation to our instructors and objects of derision for the upper classmen, we soon dispelled these delusions. For after a few months of accustoming ourselves to the routine of our new sphere, we shed our mantles of green. We demonstrated our athletic prowess by the boys' capturing the Inter- Class basketball cup. As every successful expedition needs its guides, so We, for our leaders, chose as President, Fred McSherryg Vice-President, Catherine Miller, Secre- tary, Mae Angle, Treasurer, Raymond Schwingerg Asst. Treasurer, Lucille Barner. As a fitting conclusion of our hrst year of ardent labor we held a picnic at Braddock Heights. But, alas, rain proved to be the dispoiler of our anticipated pleasures. After a season of appreciated diversion we reassembled to renew our tasks. But we missed the name of a comrade, familiar, dear, Charles Humel- sine, who in death hath achieved his victory. As reveille sounds at the dawn of our third season of conquest we find many among the missing and vanquished. Our prayer goes out to them for fairer fortunes in future affairs. Every previous year we have contributed a fine representation of contest- ants in the various fields of extra curricular activities. We are ever striving to make, as an incentive to our successors, every en- deavor, a field of conquest, every goal, an illustrious triumph. Fifty-four ef f' ' if Q! J ARRETT STATON Assistant Treasurer .... ..... C AMILLA ROHRER History of the Class of '27 Sophomore! How big that word looked to us this time last year! And how big the word junior looks to us now! But, though in a short while we shall feel a little more above the class we have now learned to love, we should be, and for the most part are, thankful for the splendid fellowship and co- operation that have existed throughout our second year at Broadway and Surrey. Our class has indeed been a noteworthy one. When we entered the Wash- ington County High School in the fall of '23 we numbered three hundred, the largest Freshmen class the school had ever registered. During this year our social activities were, no doubt, more extensive than those of former years, for we held a most successful Farewell party for Miss Mary Newman, our Latin instructor. As the close of our Freshmen year drew near, we reached the climax of this part of our history, with the election of the following efficient officers: President, Richard Smith, Vice-President, Letitia Shenkg Secretary, Helen Reese, Treasurer, Jarrett Staton, Assistant Treasurer, Camilla Rohrer. Regardless of the Hshynessn and 'ibashfulnessv which we experienced this first year, we emerged from the haze, as one of the most successful first year classes the Washington County High School had ever seen. This success has followed us into our second year, for we have proved our- selves capable, not only by our successful class party, but in all the activities of the school as well. The class of '27 has followed the custom by choosing our rings and pins, which were considered very pretty. A splendid feeling prevalent among Sophomores this year, is that they wish to lend their heartiest and most earnest efforts to better the school, which is doing so much for them. This can be seen in their participation in the va- rious activities of the school, be they athletic or literary. So it can readily be seen that 'Z 7 is a class that can be proud of itself. It is almost a certainty that next year we shall have the best, if not the largest, junior class possible to conceive of in the history of our High School. Prac- tically everything around Washington County High School which at one time seemed muddled is now comprehensible to us, and we shall henceforth look forward to doing better and bigger things for the school we love, and incident- ally for ourselves. SHANK The Athletic Association this year has accomplished many things of a really constructive nature. and of much benefit to the school and to school ath- letics. Its greatest achievement has been the winning of the Cumberland Valley Championship in Football. During the Football season the association showed its most spirit. Cheering squads were formed under the leadership of several peppy students. Enthusiastic pep talks were given to the members by Mr. Glenn. Season tickets in Basketball were issued, but they did not meet with com- plete success An Inter-class Basketball contest was sponsored by a large number of members and a cup was awarded to the Senior Team. The Association also gave presents to the coaches as a reward for their Valued guidance in athletic training. The Association started the year with a small sum of money in the treas- ury, but due to a winning team in football the treasury has greatly increased and is now Financially sound. Sixly-Hue Football Review The f'Hagerstown Hill won the C. V. Athletic League Championship for the first time in the history of the school. Much of the success of this season was due to the football camp at Cale- donia, under the supervision of Coaches Poffinberger and Wilson. Upon re- turning to school, practice was held daily at Willow Lane Park. The first game was played at Shepherd College. Although it was not a victory from the standpoint of scoring it helped Coach Poffinberger very much in finding the weak spots in the lineup and it showed him that the team had true fighting spirit which every winning team must have. The next two games which were League Games, proved to be easy vic- tories for the Local Eleven. ' The fourth game which was played with Winchester Hi another member of the League was a game which will go down in History as the best played and most exciting game ever witnessed at Willow Lane Park. With but two minutes to go Dorsey, our local half-back intercepted a forward pass and dash- ed fifty-iive yards down the field for the winning touchdown, Our game with Gettysburg Academy was played in a foot of snow. Never before had our team experienced such playing conditions. With the deciding game of the C. V. A. L. but a week off, practices were held each evening until the moon made its appearance. When the team went on the field, they had but two thoughts, to win or lose fighting. As a result the team was victorious thus making them Champions of the C. V. Athletic League. This game was played at Martinsburg. Although some of our most valuable players will be lost through gradua- tion, the prospects for a championship team next year are very bright. The following players will graduate, Captain Gordon, Ex. Captain Hutzell, Bikle, Winters, Chaney, Cosens, Schellhase and Schroyer. We wish to extend a vote of thanks to Coaches Poffinberger and Brown for their unceasing services to our team. GAMES AT W Shepherds College ....... 34 Shepherdstown W Waynesboro . .... . . . The team composed largely of greenies, after having been licked into shape played its first game at Middletown a practice game which we lost. However, it did not make such a great showing against some of the league teams, especially against those where soccer is their only sport. Much difficulty was met when the team played on some of the fields in the league. With the exception of Captain Rider, Beard, Messersmith, Dellinger, George, and D. C. Miller who will graduate, the Soccer team will have prac- tically the same material to draw from next year, and it is hoped that it will be able to become Champions of the County. VVe wish to thank Coach LaMar for the interest which he has shown throughout the season. BIILLER Volley Ball Review Volley Ball, although rather slow compared to a number of other games, has been a very popular sport in the past year. Teachers, students, and out- sidersxwere not disappointed when they attended any of the games. In fact they were overjoyed to have had such an opportunity. When our coach Miss McCaffrey called for Volley Ball players, about thirty responded. Out of that number were chosen the eight which now con- stitute the team. They are all Freshies, except one, but when it comes to playing they get there just the same. When the subject, Volley Ball, is mentioned, the first question that comes to mind is, 'LHOW many games did you Win?'l Well, We won eight out of twelve, giving us third place in the league, which consists of teams from Wil- liamsport, Smithsburg, Hancock, Clearspring and Boonsboro. The team is given the honor of winning the games, t'Yes, they plunged in with all their mightfl fought and worked for their school. But then we must not forget the backing which the School gave them. When all the games were played, cheer- ing squads gathered on all sides of the court and yelled for t'Hagerstown.l' Groups at a time assembled and gave those old familiar yells. How encourag- ing they Were. It made the games have some extra life in them, but above all led us to our goal. Although We stand third in the league now, We still have a chance for first place, The girls have practiced every possible day, during the Winter, so they will be in trim for the spring season. Then-Lookout for Hagerstown, be- cause we are going out for the championship HRight.'7 We are going to fight until We have accomplished that, which We have so long striven for? Victory. At the outset, the team was handicapped by not having a hall where they could practice regularly and privately. The Y. M. C. A. has a line court but is inaccessible to the High School team for permanent practice. It is true that most of the team members belong to gym classes and in that way secure the benefit of the large court but they do not, and have not in the past, had a chance to practice as a team. Everyone who claims to be a critic of sports knows that members of a team must work together in practice if they are to work 'together when they are on the Floor in a regular game. It is generally held that until the High School has a court which they can use all of the time that it cannot hope to turn out teams of the calibre that it ought to. The members of the squad this year deserve commendation for showing their good spirit in face of difhculties. Their spirit of sportsmanship has run higher than ever, this year and it is hoped that the better standard will be maintained. VVe wish to extend our thanks to Coach Osha for his untiring efforts in behalf of our team. Basketball Schedule and Resalls NAME SVIIUUI, 11.x'rlc svouu UPF, NY. C. ll. S. A great deal of credit belongs to Coach Wright who put forth his best efforts to turn out a winning team. This year's schedule was not as heavy as in former years. It was the gen- eral opinion that the team heretofore played more games than was best for a girls' team. The most exciting and hardest fought games of the season were the two games with Martinsburg. Although both games were lost, the team played the best games of the season. Every iight for victory was marked by the clean playing of the girls. The team has fared very well financially this year with the Athletic Asso- ciation to back it. Traveling has proved less expensive than the home games. Now that the season is over we have only one sad event to look forward to. That is the graduating of four of the best and most dependable players- Captain Josephine Spielman, Hazel Tenney, Frances Malotte and Catherine Lewis. The first three girls have played on the team during all four years and their loss will be a great blow to the team. But there is still a large amount of material from which to pick a team next year. Among the members two quartets have been started. One, called HThe Spontaneous Quartet composed of Seniors appeared on several occasions in public. The other is composed of three Seniors and one junior and is on the road to success. It has been said by vocal critics that the club has excellent quality and should be able to accomplish many things in the future. Herels to its success. Seventy-eight The Girls' Glee Club For many years W. C. H, S. has had a very valuable asset. its Glee Club. This musical club consists of sixty-one members, including the violinist and accompanist. The membership is apportioned according to the best voices in the different classes There are thirty-one Seniors. twenty juniors and ten Sophomores. The Glee Club does not coniine itself entirely to school work, for it is call- ed on often to do work in churches. and elsewhere. This year, the club won first prize in the annual Mummersl parade. Their costumes were quite original, being Tommy Tip Toes. Also, it quite distin- guished itself by having a number of its members in the Alsatia Minstrel Show. Living up to its aim of always presenting a yearly operetta. this year. they presented a play, called, f'The Japanese Girlfl This pageant was picturesque, having a very elaborate setting. In May, the Glee Club was a participant in Music Week Program. As a last finishing touch, with the Boys' Glee Club. sang at the Commencement Week exercises. Not enough credit can be given to Miss Electa Ziegler. for her interest and creditable leadership of the Club. She has led it to success in all of its undertakings, and most of all, it is through her efforts that the Glee Club has become a recognized organization, thereby making W. C. H. S. stand out prominently in music circles. Seventy-nine The H i- Y Review The Hagerstown Hi-Y Club was tirst organized in the fall of 1919 at the Y. M. C. A. Camp along Big Pool. For the last two years the Club, under the leadership of Mr. H. E. Wolf, has been growing steadily. The present Hi-Y began its work in April 1924, when new members were taken into the club. A banquet was given at which Mr. Grossbeck, Wilming- ton, Delaware, Boysl Work Secretary and Mr. J. D. Zentmyer gave interest- ing talks. During the summer outings were held at Besterls Club House along the Potomac River, at Red Bridge and Caledonia. The club started its real work with the beginning of school, Meetings were held every Monday evening at which many interesting discussions took place. One of the first steps made by the club was the publishing of the Hi-Y Helper which introduced the HFour-C Campaignf' This campaign was for the purpose of establishing, clean speech, clean sports, clean living, and clean scholarship. The next step was a Friendship Campaign for the purpose of establishing better friendship. It was introduced at a banquet at which President Gordon, Mr. Hicks and Mr. Wolf gave interesting talks. The remainder of the cam- paign was put across by discussion in regular meetings. During the winter, members of the Club attended conferences at Camp Letts on the Rhodes River and at Wilmington, Delaware. One of the largest feats accomplished by the club was a banquet given to initiate the county schools into Hi-Y work. Mr. Harry Baker, National Boy's Work Secretary and Mr. Zentmyer gave talks on the purpose and work of the Club. Several times the Club was entertained by Max Fiery, its former Presi- dent. Much credit for the success of our Club this year is due to our good leader, Mr. Harry E. Wolf. Eighty Presidmt .,,.. Vice-Prasizimf ,. Secretary .... Treasurer .. Leader . . REVIEW The Orchestra was reorganized in january of this year under the leader- ship of Harold Rider. Rehearsals have been held weekly in the school and Various homes. The Work of the Orchestra has been excellent, bringing not only vociferous applause on numerous occasions but also many comments praising their ex- cellent work. The Orchestra ofliciated at all High School activities, such as, basketball games, programs and commencement. In addition, they played for various clubs, lodges and churches of the city. Although some of the most capable players will be lost through gradua- tion, bright prospects are entertained for next year's organization. Eighty-two The Boys' Hi Dran'zalie Club In October of this school year The Boys, Hi Dramatic Club was organiz- ed with the following officers: President. Ralph Sprecher: Vice-President, Raymond Schwingerg Secretary. Edwin Kemp: Treasurer, Robert Elliott, At a later date the Club chose its colors. blue and gold. The Club was especially fortunate in securing such an able and experienced director as Miss Grace Brane. The first semester was spent in organizing and studying dramatic terms and expression. The second semester was spent in dramatizing several short plays. The first public appearance was March fifth at the Y. M. C. A. The plays were well received and the Club with Miss Brane were tendered many Words of praise. This being the first year for such an organization at Surrey no illustrious achievements can be expected. To be pioneers is a task worthy of admiration. The Club having reaped the benefits of this organization. pass it on to future classes with the hope that by their labor and success they shall perpetuate its existence as a permanent school organization. Class Play According to the custom of past years, the Senior Class will present a play this year. Last year, finding that the former plan of publication was not altogether satisfactory, the girls of the four classes from Broadway successfully edited monthly, a separate four page paper. This year, with a view towards the union of Broadway and Surrey, the Hoo-Wair-N-Wat became a Co-ed Paper. The staff has accomplished its one object-that of editing a peppy, six page paper. It even went so far as to make one number a :Surprise Issuei' of fourteen pages, featuring a two page pictorial section, several cross-word puzzles, and a number of good cuts. During the Hoo-Wair-N-Wat's three years' existence it has been financed by funds obtained from the proceeds of a candy sale, the Bo-Peep Tea Room, a lunch stand at the Fairground, subscriptions, and advertisements EDITORIAL STAFF Editor-in-Chief . . . I- W- yy. 'fj,1U,t Eighty-seven Clubs at Broadway A very valuable addition was made to the extra-curricular activities this year when a number of clubs were organized at Broadway. They were as follows:- Dramatic Club Latin Club Handicraft Club Debating Club French Club Each club held its meeting once a week and was under the supervision of one or more teachers. The meetings were held from three fifteen until four. Every student was required to hold membership in at least one and not more than three of the clubs. Some very valuable work was accomplished, not only in the programs of the clubs themselves but in furthering co-operation between the students and the teachers and in furthering the interest of the students in the school. Ciiizenship Activities ai Surrey The foundation of our citizenship is based on three great principles,4 inspiration, information and participation. The greatest of these is participa- tion. Under the leadership of our history teacher, Mr. E. Russell Hicks, the Senior Class tried to develop these three great principles to a high degree. ln the first part of the year we organized HYe Olde Town Meetingf' which introduced a government, of the student, by the student, for the student, under the guidance of the teacher. Each morning the meeting was opened by the moderator who presided until the end of the business period. The meeting was then turned over to Mr. Hicks. Many interesting dicussions arose and, in addition to our regular history work, much practical information was learned. On March 27, a miniature Congress was organized as part of our regular Civics Course. The Senior Academics became the Senate and the Senior Commercials became the House of Representatives. In the Senate, Edwin Schroyer was elected Vice-President and Arthur Yeakle was made Chief Clerk. joshua Messersmith and Frederick Miller were chosen majority and minority floor leaders by their respective parties. In the House, Robert Stouffer was elected Speaker and Alvin Saum was elected Chief Clerk. Howard Schellhase and King Keedy were chosen ma- jority and minority floor leaders. Party spirit was strong in both Houses. Many bills were introduced and debated upon, Clear thinking became the order of the day. Difficult prob- lems were disposed of in a quick and decisive manner. Problems were solved just as the United States Senate solves them. There is no doubt in the mind of any Senior that this training in Citizen- ship has been and will be a great help to him, 1 Eighty-eight 53 if ki J nw ' as ,xr . 55 Sf' .fy ' , ,f 'ft ,X g' n K N A X 1 Q f mx I N gf 1 we .. The club drew up a constitution and elected the it llowing oflic:rs for a term of one school year: President ...... .... C . T. NIENTZER, JR., '25 Vice-President . .. ...... FRED MUSEY, 'ZS The purpose of the club was to stimulate interest along scientific lines and to aid the students to understand new inventions and everyday questions that could not be discussed in class. The club maintained a point system for topics discussed on the weekly programs and in this way everybody had to get Min the whirlll and help it along. Many interesting experiments were performed and much knowledge and enjoyment was derived from them. Beside the work that the club did in its Thursday programs it sponsored several excursions to nearby industrial plants and mills. Boys, Debating Club In the early part of the year the Debating Club was organized under the leadership of Mr. Bowser and Mr. Glenn. Later, an election of officers was held. The following, officers were elected: President .,.......,... LEON ZAHN Secretary ......... J. NIESSERSMITH Vice-President ,.....,.. JAY SCHAFF Assistant Secretary ........ N. REED Treasurer .,.. C. E. BECK The other members Were, J. W, Cable, J. E. Shockey, H. Rider, E. Schroyer and I.. Gruber. At first the Club dwelled on minor debates and proper methods of debate until the Child Labor Question arose. 'Then each member prepared a debate on the subject. in order to pick from the Club a team for afnrmative and nega- tive. The teams picked were: Affirmative Negative J. R. lVlESSERSMITH C. E. BECK J. W, CABLE E. SCHROYER J. E. SHOCKEY A. JAY SCHAFF Very much preparation was made by both teams in getting all material possible and debating among themselves. A similar organization was formed at Broadway and time is expected to bring forth great speakers from both schools. Ninety .. A uiographg 5--T-l.
