' Epitome 1968 Is Fiftieth HHS Yearbook In 1917, the HHS senior class compiled the first yearbook, the Aitch Aitch Ess Revue, ' 17. It was small and rather like a pamphlet. In 1919, the second volume was named the Epitome, and the name became official as the third volume was printed in 1921. After that, a steady stream of Epitomes have fol- lowed each year. A unique feature in many of the early yearbooks was a copy of the words and music to the school song which was written by HHS alumnus Willard J. Stahr. In the past fifty years nearly 2600 students have been graduated from HHS. The class of 1917 had fourteen members. All the senior classes up to the 1930 ' s had fewer than fifty members per class. En- rollment increased considerably as a result of school consolidation in 1962 when Hagerstown, Greens Fork, Economy, Dalton, Millville, and Jacksonburg became the Nettle Creek School Corporation. In 1965 the Standing in front of the old high school building on North Washington Street, the entire student body of HHS gathered for this picture in 1914: Row 1, (L to R), Helen Root Cart- mell, Nora Thalls Winchel, Grace Walker Lapthorne, Marvel Woolard Nelson, Leah Petro Hutchison, Esther Porter Burn- ham, Vera Bookout Mohler, Leona Sells Hatfield, Edna Wilson Hohman, Dexter Peckinpaugh Brock, Mable Ulrich Prichard, Gladyse Cromer Parsons, Ruth Cromer Sherry, Mildred Northcutt Wilson, Velma Allen Carter, Kate Dug- gins Fatout, Grace McCullough Brown, Alma Waltz Sherry, number of graduates passed the one hundred mark for the first time. The 1968 senior class graduated 108 members, the smallest class in a student body of nearly 500. Changes have taken place in the school buildings, also. The high school in 1917 was on North Washing- ton Street. In 1922 the school moved to North Sycamore Street. Until 1937 when the present gym- nasium was built, many sports events took place in a community gym on East College Street. The Arts and Science and Agriculture buildings were added in the 1960 ' s. Now plans are underway for a new junior- senior high school north of town. In addition to the story of the 1967-68 school year at HHS, the Epitome 1968 includes a few pictures of past years at HHS lent by generous HHS graduates to commemorate the fifty years that the Epitome has preserved memories.
