Epitome 1968 Hagerstown High School Hagerstown, Indiana Volume 50 Old high school building on North Washington Street. p resent high school building on Nort h Sycamore Street. ' Epitome 1968 Is Fiftieth HHS Yearbook In 1917, the HHS senior class compiled the first yearbook, the Aitch Aitch Ess Revue, ' 17. It was small and rather like a pamphlet. In 1919, the second volume was named the Epitome, and the name became official as the third volume was printed in 1921. After that, a steady stream of Epitomes have fol- lowed each year. A unique feature in many of the early yearbooks was a copy of the words and music to the school song which was written by HHS alumnus Willard J. Stahr. In the past fifty years nearly 2600 students have been graduated from HHS. The class of 1917 had fourteen members. All the senior classes up to the 1930 ' s had fewer than fifty members per class. En- rollment increased considerably as a result of school consolidation in 1962 when Hagerstown, Greens Fork, Economy, Dalton, Millville, and Jacksonburg became the Nettle Creek School Corporation. In 1965 the Standing in front of the old high school building on North Washington Street, the entire student body of HHS gathered for this picture in 1914: Row 1, (L to R), Helen Root Cart- mell, Nora Thalls Winchel, Grace Walker Lapthorne, Marvel Woolard Nelson, Leah Petro Hutchison, Esther Porter Burn- ham, Vera Bookout Mohler, Leona Sells Hatfield, Edna Wilson Hohman, Dexter Peckinpaugh Brock, Mable Ulrich Prichard, Gladyse Cromer Parsons, Ruth Cromer Sherry, Mildred Northcutt Wilson, Velma Allen Carter, Kate Dug- gins Fatout, Grace McCullough Brown, Alma Waltz Sherry, number of graduates passed the one hundred mark for the first time. The 1968 senior class graduated 108 members, the smallest class in a student body of nearly 500. Changes have taken place in the school buildings, also. The high school in 1917 was on North Washing- ton Street. In 1922 the school moved to North Sycamore Street. Until 1937 when the present gym- nasium was built, many sports events took place in a community gym on East College Street. The Arts and Science and Agriculture buildings were added in the 1960 ' s. Now plans are underway for a new junior- senior high school north of town. In addition to the story of the 1967-68 school year at HHS, the Epitome 1968 includes a few pictures of past years at HHS lent by generous HHS graduates to commemorate the fifty years that the Epitome has preserved memories. Student Activities Probably the most memorable school events have been extracurricular activities. The success of these projects has depended upon preparations made and excitement created by students themselves. Recalling those times, people have remarked, Remember how hard we worked and how much fun it was? All these activities have provided the proper accent to memories of high school years. The Junior-Senior Prom 1967. Hard Working Students Prepare for Homecoming; Following lunch, the student body participates in a snake dance which travels through downtown and convenes at a pep rally. Shown working on the music department float, Joe Barnard and Rob Beachler are speaking foreign languages to Popeye. Gary Dimett, loyal class worker, is with senior float. He directed Senior Carnival and was a Prom chairman. 10 Evening Is Success for Tiger Team and Seniors Homecoming, October 30, was the highlight of the football season as the Tigers easily defeated the Knightstown Panthers, 30 to 19. The theme for all floats, chosen by the Student Council, was comic strip characters. Many classes and clubs entered floats, while officers of other groups rode in cars. Seniors nominated four queen candidates, and the entire student body picked the queen, Mary Wilson. Disbelief and joy are the expressions on Mary Wilson ' s face as she is announced Homecoming queen. Candidates are Claudia Allen, Kathy Wall, and Jean Campbell. Seniors took first in the float contest with the theme We ' ve Got Spirit , as shown by Casper the Friendly Ghost. Beep Beep says the Road Runner, warning opponents to get out of his way. This freshman float took third place. ItY IS , The second place sophomore float features a large figure of Linus, complete with security blanket. 11 Successful Senior Carnival Highlights Hobo Day Hobo Day preceded the annual Senior Carnival. After purchasing a 5c Hobo-Day ticket from the senior class, students were permitted to wear hobo costumes to school Friday. After much committee work, the Senior Carnival was held November 11. Profits were used to finance the yearbook. Psychedelic booths and mazes, sheriffs and flower power were seen. Several students were married. Telegrams were sent, fortunes told, novel ties sold, bal- loons shaved, cakes won, and fun was had by all. Hobos Debbie Baker, JoAnn Newman, and Patti Fyfe await their turn in the bread line. Seniors Present Comedy rr For Heaven ' s Sake ■ A comedy For Heaven ' s Sake was presented by the senior class, March 26, 1968, after being postponed by a late March snowstorm. The play concerns a young boy who goes to Heaven. Before he can get in, however, he must succeed in accomplishing a mission on earth. The mission is to help a young bookworm round out his life by getting him interested in a certain girl. In trying to work this out, the young boy involves the couple and others in many humor- ous situations. Mrs. Larry H. Long directed both the junior and senior plays. Students have remembered occasions when class rings or caps and gowns were ordered, or being with friends between classes and during the open noon hour. These informal moments completed the school day. The gym was a favorite meeting place at noon. Students could buy candy, dance, play basketball, or stand and talk as these seniors are doing. Students scurry to be first in line for lunch. Sophomore president Steve Higinbotham takes Susann Mitchell ' s ring size as she prepares to order her class ring. During lunch hour, Wes Debolt, Rcdith Summers, Randy Nicholson, and Kathy Crcene soak up the spring sun. Student Elections Mimic Authentic Procedures New election procedures were incorporated into school activities by the Student Council this year. Anyone wanting to become a candidate for class of- ficer or cheerleader had to file a petition which con- tained fifteen student signatures. After filing, the candidates then campaigned by talking with fellow classmates, hanging posters and giving speeches. Of- ficial balloting concluded campaigns. Two weeks preceding election day, posters were seen in halls, on bulletin boards, and above lockers. Several amusing cam- paign slogans accompanied the posters. Among them were Rex Bell ' s I get things done, Bob Baer ' s Vote for Baer by gum, and Mark Lagomarcino ' s Snoopy comics. Mary Root wears buttons which support her candidates. HI r k V W. ml W A % v[ ■ ' .. . -j- .i r During a special convocation, election rules were announced, prospective cheerleaders tried out, and campaign speeches were given. Tomatoes, lettuce, and carrots are cleverly used by Janine Stout in her campaign speech. Karen Snyder works with other seniors at the election polls. HJ n HHS Student Spends Senior Year in Korea Scott is pictured in his Korean school uniform. Scott Werner, former HHS student, spent senior year as an International Christian Youth Exchange student, sponsored by the Methodist Church. Through this program he spent a year in Seoul. South Korea, with a family of seven. During vacation he traveled thr ough South Korea, seeing Buddhist temples, climb- ing to top of volcanoes, and working in rice paddies. He also visited with Korean people and helped in therapy work and orphanages. While at HHS. he was a member of National Honor Society. Hi-Y, Red Cross. The 1967 musical, Bells Are Ringing , was as entertaining as the earlier ones put on by the HHS music department. One could hear such songs as The Party ' s Over and Just In Time being hummed in HHS halls for some time after the musical. Many people never seen on stage played a vital part in the production. Among these were co- directors Mr. Harold Smith and Mr. Yeager, the Egats club, and the costume and make-up committees. Like most musicals, Bells Are Ringing has a happy- ending, and here Ella and Jeff are reunited after trouble with the law and a case of mistaken identity. A Moonlight and Roses theme was carried out by transforming the gym into a garden patio. As couples entered across a bridge, their attention was drawn by a gazebo in the center of the floor, where the Middletown High School dance band played. Prom royalty was crowned in front of the Southern mansion on the stage. John Weiss and Joe Barnard act as masters of ceremony for the crowning. Here Jean Ann Campbell receives her crown from John as King Scott Werner smiles approvingly. As the excitement of Prom reaches its peak, Jean and Scott smile happily for the camera. Les Mosier, Dean Campbell, Wes DeBolt, and Mike Paul. 2] Much Preparation Precedes ' Piazza Romana; The 1968 Junior-Senior Prom, Piazza Romana , was held from 9 to 12 the evening of April 26. The gym was transformed into a beautiful garden with a fountain and swing located on the stage. Above the fountain, a soft pink light filtered through the blue ceiling. Flickering candles and pastel table cloths decorated the refreshment and table area which covered one-half of the gym floor. Couples danced to the music of the Middletown Dance Band. Prom Chairman Dan Hollenberg (left) supports Bobby Baer and fellow Juniors in their efforts to complete Prom. Redith Summers goes merrily about her work. Lucille Stout, a graduate of HHS, applies the final touches to Krista McMinn ' s hair style. Juniors apply group effort under the supervision of Mrs. Beeson. Phil Beachler straightens his tie before leaving home to pick up his date for the Prom. 22 Then Comes the Awaited Evening of Enchantment Royal candidates (L to R) Randy Nicholson, Chris Stone, Tim Franklin, Linda Wieseke, Mike Fouts, Anita Miller, Clif Lakes, Randi LaGrange, Doug Todd, and Rebecca Pitts anx- iously await the final decision. Doug Todd and Rebecca Pitts reign as king and queen of the 1968 Junior Senior Prom. Prom excitement continued into the after prom party at the Hartley Hills Country Club from midnight to 2 o ' clock. Moving from room to room, the couples enjoyed both games and dancing. Music was provided by the NeoOrpheus, a band from Alexandria, Indiana. Juniors ' parents prepared the refreshments and sponsored the evening ' s activities. Many received recognition for per- fect attendance and high honor roll averages. Several scholarships were also given. r F f l W ' W .- p- m 1 ■ ■ § ' xSI ■ Mrs. Long presented Jennifer Stout (above) and Becca Lilly for outstanding performance during class plays. Jennifer also won the Betty Crocker award. Miss Veach awarded Betty Scruggs a trophy for her out- standing achievement in four years of FHA. She also received the Crisco Award and a certificate from McCalls. Mrs. Devine received a standing ovation from student body and faculty when Mrs. Inman presented her with a gift for her many years of service at HHS. Steve Cox and Susie Stratton received I Dare You awards for outstanding school leadership. Deserving Students at Honor Day Ceremony The American Legion and Auxiliary sponsored these students to attend Hoosier Girls ' and Boys ' State 1967: (L to R) Rob Beachler, Jean Campbell, Bill Burton, Jennifer Stout, and Burt Vanderbilt. These students were recognized for individual achievement. Jean Campbell received the American Legion School award and a trophy for outstanding choir member. Kathy Wall received the state Hallmark award, scholastic awards, and an art workshop at BSU, sponsored by the Women ' s His- tory Club. Linda May was recognized as winner of local and county DAR award. She also received the Psi Iota Xi $400 scholarship and numerous other scholastic awards. David Lester received the American Legion School award and the respected Eddie Hoover Sports award. Seven fortunate HHS students were recognized by State Scholarship Commission for high Scholastic Aptitude Test scores: (front L to R) Krista Hollenberg, Jennifer Waltz, Jennifer Stout, and Linda May; (back L to R) Mike Hurst, Burt Vanderbilt, and Larry Smith. 25 Weather Thwarts Outdoor Commencement Plans For the first time in the history of HHS an out- door setting was planned for Commencement. Yet as graduation day approached, a steady rain forced the ceremony indoors. The gym was decorated in green and gold, harmonizing with the boys ' green robes and white robes worn by the girls. Yellow roses were carried by the girls at baccalaureate. In place of a guest speaker, two members of the graduating class gave the Commencement addresses. Three school board members, who had students in the 1968 graduation class, distributed diplomas. Horace Smith, con- gratulates Carol Williamson as class sponsor Olene Veach looks on. Arnold Dougherty and Wilbur May also presented diplomas. The three board members are HHS alumni. With mixed emotions, George Brown and Linda Bryan the 108 graduates from the auditorium. 20 Kathy Wall, Salutatorian, and Krista Hollenberg, Valedic- torian, were unexpectedly presented small trophies by Mr. Powers to honor them at commencement exercises. Wr . H BP m ■ iiiimiiiiin n i II Value of a Diploma was the address topic chosen by Jenni fer Stout and John Weiss. Alb um As a yearbook becomes older, its album section becomes more interesting. People have always been amused to see how different someone looked when he was younger. Yet, for some reason, they still have been able to recognize him. Seeing those familiar faces has revived memories and has made that school year come alive once again. The senior class of 1968. 27 The Class of 1968 Reaches Their Last Year The class of 1968 carried on many varied activi- ties, most of which were used to finance the Epitome. Among these were the Senior Carnival, held in No- vember, and the class play, held in March. Seniors also sold concessions at all athletic events during the first semester. The seniors definitely owed the success of their ac- tivities to Miss Veach and Mr. Neirinck, class spon- sors, and Miss Gill, Epitome sponsor. These teachers deserved much gratitude for their long hours of hard work. Particularly memorable were the senior classes such as government, physics, math, and English. He didn ' t e ven have time to clear oft his desk. •m m m .;£ Miss Helen Smith, executive secretary for the administration, has been with the system for 39 years. In a brief interview with Supt. Robert Clark, many plans for the new jr.-sr. high school were re- vealed. The $3,000,000 project proposes a gym- nasium that will seat 3500, an auditorium that can be divided into three lecture halls, a swimming pool, carpeting, and air conditioning to name a few items. The school building will be able to accommodate a maximum of 1200 students. It is to be built on Baker Road north of Hagerstown. By the fall of 1970, the school should be ready for use; Mr. Clark said he honestly feels it will be one of the best schools in this area. The school board has been active in preparing the plans for this project. These members are Porter C. Davis, pres., Raym ond D. Woolard, v. pres., Paul Williamson, sec, Arnold Dougherty, Robert Howell, Wilbur May, and Horace Smith. Mrs. Martha Swaim, Activities secretary, is shown here with huge Burroughs adding machine. As financial secretary for the administration. Mrs. Virginia King performs vital services. 48 New Principal Arrives at HHS From Colorado The new principal, Mr. Robert Powers, came here from Whitefield High School in Security, Colorado, where he worked in administration and guidance. He is a member of the local Rotary Club. This marked Mr. Paul Wittman ' s second year as assistant principal of H.H.S. He also teaches a general bi- ology class. With the end of the year came retirement of Mrs. Doris Devine which brought to a close 21 years of service to the school as a social studies teacher and guidance director. Since Mr. Powers believes things should be done yesterday he must eat lunch in his office to keep up. When Mr. Wittman goes home after a full day at school, he still has chores on his farm. Here he is shown with one of his calves Pee Wee. Mrs. Devine manages to keep up on her paper work as well as serve as a guidance counselor. She is also sponsor of National Honor Society. 49 Special Services Are Performed by Able Staffs The army has its special forces; so does H.H.S. The duties of our special forces are very diversified, ranging from giving shots to cleaning rooms to running errands through the halls. Everyone should be grateful for the services, and the people who perform them. Mrs. Fulton performs the very necessary duties of school nurse. With her office in the grade school she serves the entire system. Custodians are (L to R), Joe Hall, Earcle Freeze, Paul Durbin (supervisor), Leona Wyne, Fred Pope, and Bill Shook. Not pictured Joe Snyder. These girls, besides collecting attendance blanks, do many Burroughs, Susie Stratton, Pam Litton, Barb Stout, and other odd jobs. Office girls (L to R), Mrs. Sandmann, Joy Connie Luellen. Not pictured, Debbie Beach. 50 li! They are (L to R) Row 1: Mr. Tucker, Mr. Dimett, Mr. Durbin (grounds supervisor), Mrs. Hunt, Mr. Bain, Mr. Foland, Mr. Dickey. Row 2: Mr. Freeh, Mr. Williams, Mr. Hunt, Mr. Keiser, Mr. Underhill, Mr. Mc Minn, Mr. Oler, Mr. Lindley, and Mr. Ford. Our cafeteria staff serves 225 meals a day to the high school. This hard working group is composed of (L to R), Amy DeArmond, Mary Ellen Smith, Annabel Carnes, Edna Litton, Lela Hill, and Grace Nicholson (manager). We are truly indebted to these women. 51 Teachers: At School and At Home Doesn ' t Mr. Bunny Yeager look chic in his genuine rabbit fur ear muffs? What is a teacher? Students see him from 8:00 until 3:00 as a figure of authority and the possessor of a fancy computer called a brain. His job re- quires a difficult balance of qualities. He must be stern but patient, wise but humble, an entertaining actor but not a clown or a phony. When he suc- ceeds, he radiates inner satisfaction. All this the students know, but a fact that is sometimes forgotten by h igh school students is that their teachers are not just educational machines. They are also human beings with homes, with families, with friends, and, yes, even with homework to do. And they often sigh with relief on Fridays! What is a teacher? A per- son. Just a student who grew up but liked school well enough to stay. A graduate of Ball State University this is Mr. Howard Apple ' s first teaching job. U.S. Government and Economics are taught while in the classroom; however, his extracur- ricular activities include assistant wrestling coach and line man at the football games. Famous for his As I See It in the Paw Print, Mr. Apple predicted many game scores. Admiring her collection of over thirty pitchers and urns, Mrs. Helen Beeson is shown in her new home. Originally a resident of New Castle, she moved to Hagerstown after re- ceiving her degree from Ball State University. An instructor of math courses including general math, algebra, and plane geometry, Mrs. Beeson is also a loyal HHS sports fan. Mrs. Sarah Brooks, English teacher, is an avid dog lover. Shown here with her is Patrick, her Irish setter. Mrs. Brooks has her own garden and laid the bricks for her outdoor patio. Last summer Mrs. Brooks was awarded a special English study course at Purdue University. Shown in the classroom as a Health instructor, Mrs. Karen Bubp also teaches girls Physical Education classes and is the sponsor of the Pep Club. She is credited with the new means of selecting cheerleaders. Girls trying out for cheerleaders must be approved by the Student Council and student body. She is a graduate of Anderson College. 52 Teachers: Their Families and Their Dreams Mr. Jim Clark, physics, chemistry, and general math teacher, keeps his students amused with jokes, puns, and thoughts for the day. His hobbies are bird watching and sports. He is freshman basketball coach and assistant foot- ball coach. He enjoys swimming and was a lifeguard at Hagerstown ' s Splash Club. Knitting is one of the hobbies of Mrs. Eleanor Cranor, HHS librarian. She is wearing one of her own hand-knit dresses. Mrs. Cranor sometimes brings her little grandson to the games. At her summer home in Williamsburg, Mrs. Cranor has a lovely old reed organ with an extra sounding board, making it an unusual musical instrument. Formerly on the faculty at Sunman HS, this is Mr. Ken Dieselberg ' s first year at HHS. As an inspiration to the Tiger team, Mr. Dieselberg claimed the role of head basket- ball coach. A graduate of Ball State University, his class- room topics include woodshop, mechanical drawing, and electricity. Mr. Mike Douglass, U.S. History and contemporary prob- lems teacher, was new at HHS this year. Mr. Douglass came from Muncie, where he graduated from Ball State. He, his wife, and two children now live in Hagerstown. Mr. Douglass is well-known by HHS students for his thought provoking questions and comments and his ability to engage students in heated discussions. Miss Jeanne Gill, English and journalism teacher, is kept busy working with the Epitome and Paw Print staffs. Miss Gill has been at HHS three years and was responsi- ble for getting the Paw Print started. She has received a lot of kidding about that raincoat. She looks as if she could be an escapee from the state farm. The stork stopped at the Nelson Harrison home during the winter bringing the family total to seven members. Accompanying his many fatherly duties, Mr. Harrison is currently working on his Master ' s degree at Ball State Uni- versity. He is head wre stling coach and assistant football coach. Health and driver ' s education were his classroom studies. 53 Teachers: Teaching and Traveling Junior varsity basketball coach, Mr. David Herbert, is a graduate of Indiana University. Mr. Herbert teaches his stu- dents the angles of plane geometry and the exponents of ad- vanced algebra. He also teaches senior math. Mr. Herbert and his wife have two children. Clinton, Indiana is the home town of Mrs. Gracie Inman. Clinton has many people of Italian descent and each year holds a Little Italy Festival. This is where Mrs. Inman learned the art of making spaghetti. Mrs. Inman teaches shorthand, office machines, office practice laboratory ' , and advanced typing. Mr. John Kerekes, grade school principal, took charge of a general business class this year. He is also co-sponsor of the newly formed FTA, Mr. Kerekes has two children. He and his family live in Hagerstown. Archery and auto racing are just two of the many and varied interests of Mrs. Sharon Long, English, speech, and dramatics teacher. A graduate of Ball State, Mrs. Long and her husband now live in Parker, with their three children. Mrs. Long is Drama Club sponsor and had charge of both the junior and senior plays. Mr. Herbert E. McClintock, who operates Mac ' s Garage in Hagerstown, has opened his shop to HHS junior and senior boys and is teaching them Auto Mechanics. The class lasts 3 hours each day. Knitting provides a restful and creative hobby for Mrs. Elinor McConaha, Spanish teacher. She is also an ac- complished seamstress, who makes most of her own clothes. Sewing isn ' t her only hobby, though. Refinishing antique furniture is also a favorite pastime. Mrs. McConaha, who also travels, spent several weeks in Mexico last summer. 54 Teachers: At Work and Relaxing Painting plays an important part in the life of Mr. James Needham. Mr. Needham, a graduate of Kansas State Uni- versity, is in his first year of teaching. He is in charge of HHS ' s aspiring art students, and sponsors the Art Club Bowling is a favorite hobby of Mr. Joseph Neirinck, member of the teacher ' s bowling league. A graduate of Ball State Uni- versity, Mr. Neirinck teaches psychology, world history, and world geography at HHS. He is also an avid archeologist, having spent several summers participating in archeological digs. Outside activities include Hi-Y sponsor, co-sponsor of TTA and Senior class sponsor. Mr. Ray Orman, Vocational Agriculture teacher, is a member of the Young Farmers Organization. He and his wife have two children. Mr. Orman, a Purdue graduate, spon- sors the FFA Chapter. Shown talking with Roy Werking at a football game, Miss Marilyn Oury is a loyal fan of HHS sports. She was often seen greeting fans at the auditorium doors, taking tickets, and handing out programs. She is probably most famous as typing teacher whose pupils keep their fingers in running order for daily timed writings. Miss Oury also teaches bookkeeping. Mr. Basil Rust, right, and his assistant Mr. Ted Knose seem to enjoy working on machines. Mr. Rust teaches machine shop. He keeps busy supplying the shop boys with materials they need. Mr. James Scott and his wife are shown here with their son enjoying a basketball game. Mr. Scott teaches Biology. Mr. Scott portrayed Santa Claus at the Christmas convoca- tion this year. 55 Teachers: Their Hobbies and Handicrafts Mr. Eugene Stone, who teaches typing, general business and business law, enjoys a hike through the woods. Mr. Stone also likes to camp with his family. For relaxation, he reads law, religion, and philosophy books. Mr. Stone is the only teacher with a son or daughter at HHS; his daughter Chris- tine is a junior. HHS football coach and physical education teacher, Mr. Joe Suminski hunts for pleasure. He has a cabin in Penn- sylvania, his original home, where he can go to hunt deer. Mr. Suminski has two sons, one of whom wears a football uniform. Mr. Suminski also teaches biology. Mrs. Taylor, formerly Miss Loggan, is shown here with her husband. They were recently married. Mrs. Taylor taught freshman English. She was editor of the Earlham yearbook. This was her first year at HHS. Ceramics is the hobby of Miss Olene Veach, home economics teacher. Miss Veach is shown here enjoying her hobby. Miss Veach has a busy schedule at HHS. Besides her classes, she also sponsors FHA and 4-H and helps sponsor the sen- ior class. Mrs. Wilma Warner and her husband both enjoy tlTe new piano which she received for Christmas. Mrs. Warner teaches Latin and English and is sponsor of the Latin Club. Mrs. Warner also enjoys reading. Old cars is the hobby of Mr. Ben Yeager. He is shown here with one of his five cars. Mr. Yeager teaches band, choir, and music theory. He also has the EGATS club and Marching 12. Mr. Yeager directs the Methodist Church Choir. He also has been taking flying lessons. 56 Academics The curriculum has been expanded over the years. New equipment has been purchased and more com- plex textbooks have been introduced. But the stu- dents are still the same. Each year they have worked diligently at their studies to be better prepared to meet the world in which they have lived. And HHS successfully managed to prepare them. Jury member, Claudia Allen, appears to be more interested in Les than in the case. One of the new teachers, Mr. Apple, used mini- legislatures and mock trials to add pep to the gov- ernment classes, required for all seniors. He also taught 15 economics students in money matters, which they studied by filling out tax returns and preparing budgets. Mr. Apple later supplemented his government courses with income tax study. Drugs and civil rights were two of the up-to-date topics discussed by the juniors and seniors in con- temporary problems class taught by Mr. Douglass, also new to the school. He taught all classes of U.S. History, a required class for all juniors. One project in this class was a U.S. History note- book. World geography, taught by Mr. Neirinck, was the most recent addition to the social science cur- riculum. It was open to all grade levels, but was aimed mainly at freshmen. The 32 psychology stu- dents spent many hours compiling a research paper during their semester-long course. Mr. Neirinck also taught world history, a sophomore elective. She taught all fresh- man classes and gave each student a chance for extra credit by reading a book a week. Junior classes, which read To Kill a Mockingbird, and Death of a Salesman, were taught by Miss Gill. Senior English was taught by Mrs. Brooks, who is noted for her stimulating discussions. She also taught opportunity English, a class for the student who sometimes has difficulty in reading, writing, and expressing ideas. Mrs. Long, teacher of sophomore English, added variety by having students teach the class from time to time. She also taught speech and drama, both one semester courses. The highlight of the speech classes ' year was a speech contest, in which Kathy Wall placed first in school and county competition, and third in the district. In third period junior English class, Tim Franklin and Nancy White study some of the early American authors. A daily occurrence in the Opportunity English class of Mrs. Brooks is the fight between Duane Shook and Jennifer Ridge. Students are given a chance to teach in the sophomore Eng- lish class. Here Karla Snyder takes over as teacher. 60 The six weeks is coming to an end as Linda Bryan prepares her five-paragraph author theme for senior English class. Each student selected an author to study intensely during the year. Linda chose Aldous Huxley. Let Freedom Ring, was the topic of John Weiss ' speech given in a speech contest and also in class. In freshman English, Brian Foust gives the class an ESP test while Jana Albertson observes. 61 Long Awaited Language Lab Finally Arrives New to our school this year, was the language lab. About 125 students used the lab for both Span- ish and Latin. It consisted of 30 student desks and the teacher control board. Each student had a head set and a microphone. The teacher also had a head set and a microphone, and controls to listen in. Two- way communication was possible between teacher and student. A first semester Spanish student teacher, Miss Click, is at the control panel of the new language lab. Latin students Rick Conwell, Mark Lagomarcino, and Jennifer Stout learn to drape togas. Latin is liolli amusing and confusing as shown by Re Bell, Tom Bnins, Rick Conwell, and Steve Iossi, all secon Latin students using the student controls of the language 62 Students Enjoy New Magazines in Study Hall Mrs. Cranor and her librarians contributed much to the student whether he was compiling a term paper, selecting a book for a report, or merely browsing during his spare time. An innovation this year was moving the current magazines and newspapers from the library to the study hall for students to read dur- ing their free time. The library ordered many new books and records, including a series of books by famous American authors. The library science class met once a week and learned how to classify books in the card catalog. They also learned how to use the Dewey decimal system. Library science class are Cynthia Pownall, Pam Newman, Donita Barnes, Roxanne Rhodus, Brenda Necessary and Joyce Brown supervised by Mrs. Cranor. Using the new magazine rack in the study hall is Clayton Elleman while Dallas Dale studies. Mrs. Cranor helps Jeff Dimett find information on mechan- ics. Jeff remembers all the good old days in the library. 63 Seniors Learn About Teaching Through FT A Future Teachers of America, a new experimental organization, was incorporated into the school cur- riculum to show interested students the opportuni- ties open to the field of teaching. Participating stu- dents assisted grade school teachers in typing tests, giving individual aid in reading and other subjects, and taking responsibility for playground duties. On Fridays they discussed new teaching ideas and prob- lems that arose. They were also required to report on articles written in professional journals. Mr. Neirinck and Mr. Powers were faculty advisors. FTA members are (L to R) Row 1: Susan Seffrin, Howard Nicholson, Claudia Dougherty, Phyllis Sitzlar, Debbie Ford. Row 2: Les Hosier, Krista McMinn, Kathy Wall, Linda Isaacs, Linda Bryan, Mike Paul. Finding that a child finally understands a problem is very rewarding, even to a cadet teacher, and Mike Paul will agree. The second graders find that the cadet teacher, Miss Seffrin, is seldom lacking in ability. 64 New Business Lab Teaches Efficiency Mrs. Inman taught the new experimental business laboratory. This vocational education class prepared girls for careers in office work by acquainting them with procedures and techniques used in the modern office. The girls learned different jobs by being as- signed to stations such as, duplicationist, receptionist, librarian, or office manager. The girls also did of- fice work for teachers. A calculator, mimeograph machine, a liquid duplicator, a transcriber-dication recorder, adding machines, and typewriters were pur- chased for this course. Sixteen seniors belonged to the two hour class. Second semester the business lab went to work with the shop class. Using their skills, the lab handled the shop ' s books, ordering, and correspondence. Typing, law, bookkeeping, and general business are taught in addition to the intensive lab. My Favorite Martian disguised as Gail Hendershot, is working out a new secret code on the transcriber used in business lab. Typing class turns out very efficient typists. Martha Tucker hasn ' t made a mistake; she just wants to type that line again. In business lab the girls become familiar with many new machines. Mary Wilson demonstrates the Friden Calculator. 65 Over 200 Students Study Math and Science The mathematics and science departments of H.H.S. were very complete. The mathematics depart- ment included Mrs. Beeson teaching general math, algebra, and plane geometry; Mr. Clark teaching general math; and Mr. Herbert instructing students in plane geometry, advanced algebra, and senior math. Mr. Suminski ' s and Mr. Scott ' s biology and advanced biology classes had nothing to do with mathematics, but they showed the student how his body is constructed and how it functions. Mr. Scott used experimental animals extensively to show effects and results of different physical processes applied to a physical body. Mr. Clark ' s chemistry and physics classes were closely related to mathe- matics because mathematics are needed to learn chemical and physical laws and theories. Mr. Clark and his students performed many diversified experi- ments in proving or disproving any theory of chemical technology. Mr. Clark did not limit himself to a dull action and calculated reaction. He concocted solutions designed to provide a laugh or surprise to add in- terest to his otherwise technical classes. In Chemistry, Debbie DeFrank grinds away on the ice cream that demonstrates freezing process. Gary Kitts, Dave Howell, Bob Baer, Phil Beachler. Mark Lagomarcino, and Sue Dennis approve. General math students Donnae Foulke and Terry Dick find that accuracy, even in simple circles, is important. While Marta Da is confidently experiments with dissection of a triangular prism, Becky Jones and Debbie Dennis observe. 66 Mark Gethers and Doug Poling make trigonometry a com- munity project. Greg Ozbun doesn ' t seem interested. Dave Carlson and Scott Conder demonstrate the use of the large slide rule in first year algebra class. 67 Health Education Puts on Many Different Faces Physical Education is required by all freshmen and sophomores for one semester. Mr. Suminski is the instructor of the boys phys. ed. class. The class went bowling plus their regular activities. The girls phys. ed. classes, under the direction of Mrs. Bubp, played various sports. Mr. Harrison taught both the Drivers ed. and Health classes. Health is a required semester course while Drivers ed. is not required. These agile boys, Dave Carlson and Dave Necessary are doing the monkey roll in their hoys physical education class. When Randy Keith is at the wheel, Mr. Harrison seems to be quite secure, but no one knows what ' s behind that smile. Paula Banning is concerned with getting the jump ball, but Joy Burroughs seems to be practicing modern dance. 68 Boys as Well as Girls Study Home Economics Miss Veach supervises while Jay Nicholson, Keith Underh ill, and Steve Sprouse watch in amazement as Doug Poling re- moves the hiscuits. The Home Economics department of H.H.S., headed by Miss Veach. instructed students in anything from sewing buttons on clothes to designing homes. Their projects as a group, as individuals, and as a class covered a wide range of topics. For example, one of the projects for the girls consisted of preparing meals from European and Oriental countries. For the second year a number of boys enrolled in home ec. Together, these tools provide his F.F.A. boys with an efficient shop to make them familiar with farm machinery. Field ' s Ford provided a 1968 station wagon for the engine instruction. Dana, Inc.. provided materials to make repairs on ma- chinery. The boys Farm Shop have repaired ma- chinery, painted tractors, built feeders, and have had ample experience in all the mechanics that a future farmer would need. These projects ranged from working on personal articles such as improvements on their cars, first semester, to building pedal cars for profit the second semester. The pedal car project was made possible when the school bought manufacturing rights for the light inspection car from V-Plex Clutch. This project gave the students a chance to practice the varied skills Mr. Rust taught them. Mr. Rust helps Barry Waltz and Jay Burroughs learn to use new tools. 71 Yeager Runs Music Department Singlehandedly It was a busy year for Mr. Yeager as he took over directing both band and choir as well as teaching a new music theory class. After a week at camp during the summer, the band competed in several contests. They also gave a Christmas concert at the Knights- town Children ' s Home. The highlight of the choir ' s year was the district choral festival in March. Music theory students studied part writing as well as the lives of famous composers. Miss Gill, journalism teacher, was ap- pointed as advisor. The staff extensively employed the services of several juniors. A second regular photographer was added to the staff. Also, the editor was allowed a free period during the day exclusively for yearbook work. An August delivery date for the book was used with the purpose of including the whole year in one book. Being the 50th volume of the Epitome, old pic- tures from HHS alumni were included. The whole staff worked very hard down to the smallest details to make the 1968 Epitome the best yet ! To win a Gold Emblem year after year requires new and better activities each vear. The past year added several new activities to the chapter program of work. The biggest of these was an educational exchange trip with the Eaton, Colorado, FFA chapter. John Weiss and Larry Smith along with two boys from Eaton participated in the program. The chapter also sponsored a Donkey Bas- ketball game which was very successful. Those who participated were the FFA seniors, the FFA juniors, the Hi-Y, and the faculty. The goal was accomplished by the HHS. club by having a guest speaker, Miss Irene Meyers, giving parties for mem- bers and helping the community in any way possible. This past year the club organized their activities around three basic parts — service, social and educa- tional. Service activities were a Thanksgiving basket collected for a needy family in the community, making toys for children in the state hospital and collecting money for the March of Dimes. Social events were a mother-daughter banquet, Halloween and Christmas parties and the Lady of Perfection Tea. Educational activities were helping with vocational days at school and presenting a spring style show. Regular Bodoni Book t ype was used in the 10 point size for body copy, 8 point size for captions, and 6 point size for listing underclass and alumni names. Bodoni Book Italic was used for the headlines in the 24 point size for regular headlines and 30 point size for division page heads. These styles were chosen for appearance and comfortable reading. Since this fiftieth volume of the ' Epitome is a rather special one, a lot more work and the assistance of many more people was required to produce the 1968 edition. Of course, there were the many people whose vital assistance is usually needed. Taylor Publishing Company of Dallas, Texas, printed the Epitome again this year. The advice and assistance given by Mr. Rex Moonshower, com- pany representative, was greatly appreciated. Services rendered by photographers were obviously invaluable. Underclass portraits were taken by Indiana School Pictures of Indianapolis under the manage- ment of our m usic department to whom we extend our gratitude. Reid ' s Studio in New Castle, Indiana was in charge of senior portraits. Mr. Bill Walden of Reid ' s Studio was extremely appreciated for taking most of the organization group pictures, some of the class- room shots, pictures of both proms, and several other incidental pictures. A special thanks is extended again to Reid ' s Studio for making the copies of all the old pictures used in the introductory section and on the division pages. This leads us to extend deepest thanks to these generous people who were brave enough to lend their pictures of past HHS activities, whether we used them or not: Mrs. Jesse Weaver, Mr. Marfield Cain, Mrs. Alma Sherry, Mr. Mahlon Rinehart, Mr. Donald Pass, Mr. Ed O ' Neel, Mrs. John McCormack, Mrs. Eugene Howell, Mrs. Lynn Swoveland, Mrs. Emmett Beach, Mrs. Willard DeBruler, and Mrs. William Todd. We also thank Mr. Don McCullough, Dr. and Mrs. Ernest Upchurch, and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Beeson for helping identify people in some of the old pictures. For helping with the alumni section, thanks goes to Mr. Don McCullough for supplying us with the initial list of graduates. We also sincerely thank Mrs. Devine, Miss Helen Smith, and the many people called on the telephone in effort to find the married names for many HHS alumnae. We thank Mr. Powers and the faculty for their cooperation with much of the picture taking and apologize for interrupting classes to do so. Mr. Paul Foulke gets our deep thanks for his extra efforts to mail our copy on time. Lastly, our parents are thanked for being so understanding as we worked those many hours. 124 Editor Ponders Experiences of Year ' s Work Throughout the year several people have said to me, I ' ll bet being yearbook editor isn ' t any easy job! As I worked through the year, so many details and difficulties have proven this true to a greater extent than I had initially imagined. And I have de- cided that any yearbook staff, no matter how hard they try, cannot avoid the deadline rush and other such problems simply because they are students who must find time for yearbook work in their busy schedules. Even though we ran into problems expected and unexpected, I ' m sure we ' d all agree when I say that I found my job to be far more satisfying than frustrating. And I consider the most valuable per- sonal gain in working on a yearbook staff to be the experience in learning to work with other people. Jean Ann Campbell deserves recognition here for undertaking the Student Activities section on short notice after Linda Dick moved. I would like to thank Debbie Beach and the sales staff for their work in selling Epitomes , Burt Vanderbilt for tolerating the many inconveniences we imposed upon him, and all the juniors who worked hard to help us out. Miss Gill and I both really appreciated Linda May ' s help when we called on her in emergencies. And I really enjoyed working with Miss Gill this year. She was my right hand when the going got rough. This book means a lot to me and the rest of the staff. I hope that you can appreciate and enjoy it just as much now and in years to come.
