Such was the cruelty hut daring of tl1e honiher i11 tl1e year of 1022. Some of tl1e passengers ' llsl EHHSJ ci TH E E P 1 'r o A1 14: 5-,sas jiqnj were unable to withstand the hard and adventurous flight: so they jumped off at opportune times, leaving the SC25 bomber with a group of fifty-five passengers. The next important stop was at Hopewell. Here the SC25 examined her propellers and repainted her wings, and when the passengers again piled into the good friend the bomber, it seemed as though she were entirely new and it seemed quite possible and probable that greater opportunities were at hand for flight and that greater feats could he performed. ln the year 1923 the same faithful and en- during passengers held on and continued their trip with the bomber, enjoying the flight more and more, even though they rose to a higher altitude and even though they sailed through more uncertain heights. Mr. Garver llrown relieved his honorable friend Mr. Clanipitt of the responsibility of pilot and Miss lfreeda Benbow helped plan the route. They were fortunate in securing Mr. Richard Bohannon as care-taker of their funds for repairs. etc. They found that to con- tinue their rlight as they had originally planned they would have to raise a certain sum of money so they stopped for a short time at Responsibility City where they hired Mr. Connor to give a lecture on Rex, the XYorst lloy in Town, which brought them a sufficient amount and which proved to be one of the best things that they had ever done for any city in their onward flight. Another such pro- gram sponsored by the passengers of the SC25 was the recital by The Treble Cleff Club of Richmond, lnd. The honorable flyers by this time became highly elated over their business abilities, also dramatic abilities so near the close of the year 1923. they gave a play at Successful Village. Although some of the passengers had to return home by a shorter route and some were obliged to leave for different reasons, the capacity only simmered down to forty-one. None were discouraged and some were even then looking forward to the honors they would receive when they returned to Sandy Hook. Nothing could persuade the am- bitious ones to return home before the flight was finished. The last recorded stop happened to be at the famous city of Truth, September 9, 1924. After loading on a few extra flyers and installing new supplies the bomber soon started out again on its last jump. Many were glad and yet sad for it had been one of the happiest and most enjoyable trips ever taken and the most thrilling ever experienced by any. livery one felt that on the last lap they should be guided by one who had had experience and had done admirable work so they again placed the honor and responsibility on their good friend and companion tiarver Brown, with their first pilot. Miss Eleanor XYissler. as assistant and with Mr. Richard Bohannon as supply man. This last lap proved to be the most intensely interesting flight ever tried and with an additional two the list of passengers was happily increased, making a total of forty-three. Also at this time. the SC25 was successful in securing a new owner and best of all friends, Mr. lYillard Stahr. He gave it better attention than it had ever before received and demanded that the H. H. S. Government recognize the SC25, the Invincible Bomber as a model for all other bombers. Many were the pleasures and experiences of the S-C25 during the year of 192-1-1925, such as witnessing a Lyceum Course under its supervision in the city of Conception, Chile, such as giving a Musical Comedy and last but not least, putting out this school book with the co-operation of the other bombers. The mighty SC25 returned from her Round the lYorld Flight and landed at Sandy Hook, April 50, 1925, where she received high honors and much credit for her unfailing endurance and unestimable weathering. 1191 1' Nl P 'Bl vfil . f 'i P ' 'N in ' A 56:4 - 4 , . S. A student council was called by Mr. Stahr which was composed of the class presidents of the Senior High classes and in this way the rules and regulations for the meet were made. It was decided by this dignified body that the varsity and second team men would not get to play and that the men who were eligible were those who played on neither team at the close of the season. The drawings were made in the same meeting, -the Seniors being matched against the 'luniors and the Sophomores against the Freshmen. The tournament started in red hot form on XYednesday, March 18 at four o'clock with the Senior-.lunior game. The Seniors started with a spurt but were soon pulled back by the defense of the -lunior Five. The half ended in favor of the Seniors with a score of 12-7. ln the play of the second half the 'luniors steadily climbed within scaring distance of the Senior score by the long shooting of S. Murray. However after a few ties this extremely exciting game ended 20-19 in favor of the Seniors. The second game was played on Thursday night, March 19. The Freshmen completely swamped the Sophomores by a large score of 27-9. The game was exciting and noted for the playing together and teamwork of the Freshies. They were after the Senior's scalp. Then came the biggest event of all on the 27th of March. The finals of the class tournament were played but in a whirlwind of games. As a curtain raiser the faculty were subdued by the best team the Seniors could put on the tioor from their first and second team men. That the game was rough was proved by the fact that some members of the faculty team had nine personal fouls on them. However they lost the game by 28-19 count and along with it we believe a little of their ego In the final tournament game the odds were so evenly divided between the contesting teams it seemed as though the game was anybodies. The half ended -1-3 in favor of the Seniors. However in the final session the Freshmen started a race hard to stop and with two under-basket shots by Chamness things looked pretty blue for the Seniors until Joe Harlan. the Senior's outstanding player, dropped one from the side. At this meeting were the old members of last year. At this meeting the following otlicers were elected: Stanley Murray, President: Robert Endsley, Vice-Prcsidentg Gordon Parsons, Secretary- Treasurer. Mr. Horn was chosen as our faculty adviser and Mr. Hudson, Mr. Teetor and Mr. Harlan continued to serve on the Advisory Board of the club. Harry Walker suc- ceeded Gordon Parson as Secretary-Treasurer. A campaign for new members was staged for a few weeks and then about twenty were initiated October 14. The initiation was attended by several Morton Hi-Y boys. Our next move of importance was the Father and Son Banquet, November 10. Dr. nl. vl. Rae of Richmond was the principal speaker of the affair. All through the life of the Club we have endeavored to raise the standard of morals of the men and boys of the community. Iflnnatm' Glluh T the beginning of the school year the members of the Bootser Club held Il meeting and elected the following othcers to serve the ensuing year: Pauline Knapp, President: Mary ,Tune Ramsey. Yice-President: Eleanor XYissler, Secretary and Treasurer: Mary .Tune Ramsey and 'Virginia Gilmore, Booster cheer leaders. They chose Miss Sharp for their sponsor and she has proved to be the best Booster in the organization. The Booster Club composed of the girls of the high school stands for the things of school life and endeavors to make the girls of H. H. S. of the highest and best moral character. They serve their Alma Mater by promoting activities of all kinds that help to make her a bigger and better school. The first social event of the year was the party given for the initiation of the new members. It was a great success and all felt that they had started the year right. In order to raise funds the Boosters had candy and tag sales at a number of the basketball games and they were loyally supported by the student body. lvhen the Girls' Basketball team was organized, the Club decided to purchase ties for the members of the team. The latter part of the year the girls became interested in the organization known as the Girl Reserves which is a sister organization to the Hi-Y Club, a boys' organization of the school. In order to raise money to defray the expenses of delegates to an Adult Advisors' Conference held at Ft. Xkfayne in February. the Club put on a vaudeville in the high school auditorium. The biggest feature on their program for the year was the Mother and Daughter Banquet held in the auditorium on February 12. It was the First affair of the kind ever held in Hagerstown and the girls are very proud that it was a complete success. At the banquet they learned more of the Girl Reserves and not long afterward changed their organization from a Booster Club to the Girl Reserves of Hagerstown High School. The officers remained the same for the remainder of the year except that Augusta XYhite was elected treasurer. All of the girls are enthusiastic over the new organization and all intend to 'work hard to make it the success that the Booster Club has always been. 1651 lH,H,S,1 Qi T H E E P IT o M E Q I:19951 Iiuninr may Uhr Olharm Svfhnnl Austin Hevans .. IOSI rHHs.j csgrne EPITO ME is UW Ihr Hnmtinnal Agrirultural Erpartmvnt HE Vocational Agricultural Department of the High School altho somewhat belated in being organized as compared with many schools of the state, has apparently profited by such delay in being able to avoid some of the mistakes that have been made by pioneers in this work. Probably no school in the state is more admirably situated and adapted, because of its location, its equipment, its high class of students. the splendid cooperation of the faculty and school board and the genuine support of its patrons of this work. Because of these factors we have almost at once been able to take front rank among the very best schools of Indiana. A four year course is offered embracing horticulture, poultry, animal husbandry, farm management, soils, crops, dairying, and farm mechanics. Students taking this course do not receive a one sided training but secure the full requirement in English, history and economics, mathematics and sciences, in fact all of the academic training of the high school excepting foreign languages and some lines of higher mathematics. Even the latter courses may be elected in event the student desires to attend some school requiring such subjects for entrance. The new work started with thirty-three students which is one of the largest enrol- ments in the state. The prospects are for as large an increase the coming year as can he accommodated. The teacher of this work, being employed for the full twelve months, will supervise the home projects of the vocational students and conduct boys and girls club work dur- ing the summer. The Vocational Agricultural Department stands for a more prohtable agriculture, better homes and a more enjoyable country life. Ihr rmual 'raining Evparimvnt S school began last Autumn the chance to take Vocational Agriculture held such a strong appeal for the boys that only thirteen freshman started in the Manual Train- ing Department. To this group nearly twenty eighth grade boys came, along with eighteen seventh graders. Several of the freshmen had taken Manual Training before and were ready to start out on a real job. Eight pedestals and three footstools were started. Alongwvith these jobs designs for each were drawn. Later these boys started on writing desks and library tables. To become an expert furniture manufacturer is not the intention of any of these boys, but that they may have some visible result of a year's effort is worth lots of toil and care. The eighth grade boys 'were beginners. They had to begin by learning how a plan was used and how to put it together. To square up a piece of stock presented some difficulties. Some of the boys started on larger jobs and sleeve-boards were made as well as taborets and magazine racks. The seventh grade boys had the same experience and soon turned out some neat sleeve boards. Later a magazine rack or two were made and two boys made sleds. One boy made a double-tree. Several did repair jobs on old furniture such as fixing broken chairs, drawers, etc. Later they all tried their hand at paper cut- ting and then at that thing every boy longs to get at, electricity. Bells and batteries were manipulated and everyone had a chance to try his handlat the tinker-board. l69l HL. '1 1 f ..1'1,,- ' :N-1' -1-1 Y.- ' 4 1. V al. 'I ' VE , 113-3 11 'fin' FQ. There are sixty students enrolled in this department and under the guidance of Miss Sharp, Commercial Instructor, they have done excellent work throughout the year. There are two shorthand classes. one bookkeeping class and four typewriting classes and the commercial room is as busy a room as may he found anywhere in the building. Four new typewriters and a mimeograph were added to the equipment of this depart- ment during the year, The mimeograph has proved to be of great value not only to the Commercial but to almost every other department of the school. Hnratinnal Bump 3 umnmira HIS year Yocational Home Economics was enstalled in the Hagerstown and .lef- ferson Township High School. lt is a four year Course and runs twelve month out of the year. The Freshman work is foods, cooking, garment making, and textiles. Sopho- more work is elementary dress making, textiles, hygiene and home nursing. junior work is dietetics, house planning, keeping and furnishing. Senior work is home management, costume designing, dressmaking, and rnillinery. In connection with the four year Home Economics course two years of science are required one year of art, four years of English and other credits distributed in such a way as to meet state requirements for High School graduation and college entrance, This year the Freshman class took the same work as was outlined for them but the advanced class took elementary dress making and textiles the first semester and the second semester they took costume designing, dressmaking, and inillinery. At the Farmer's Institute held in February the girls held an exhibit which consisted of undergarments. wool dresses. middies, canned fruit, cakes, muffins and food posters. They also had a style show with the girls wearing the clothes that they had made. The foods class gave a demonstration on table manners. The clothing class gave a demonstration on principles of color. Twenty-six girls from the vocational classes attended the XYayne County Short Course. The foods class gave their demonstration at the Boys' and Girls' Club banquet on Thurs- day night. The judging team which consisted of Beulah Hutson, Rlarcells Pierce. and Mary Scott represented the vocational department in the 'Wayne county judging contest on Thursday morning. The day was very valuable as it was spent in listening to several interesting lectures given by Miss Meta Martin and Miss Neva Stephenson from the ex- tension department of Purdue University. The vocational class is planning for several members to attend the club round-up at Purdue from May 3 to 8. The 4-H Club was organized at the first of the year. The officers elected were Russell Secrest. President: Marcella Pierce, Yice-President: Lucile Pierce, Secretary: and Vllilbur Werking, Treasurer. Some of the club activities of the year were a Thanksgiving dinner given to the faculty, school board, and advisory boards, and a subscription drive for the Country Gentleman. This money was to be used for prizes, trips to clubs. round-up, etc. The losing entertained the winning side tHurrah for the boys ll at an Athletic Fun-Festival. The Vocational Home Economics course has proved to be successful this year and it is hoped that it will be still more successful in the coming years. l71l lH,H,g,3 5 T H E E P I T O M E fain H9251 'Y ANL 'lfzfgi-'Q' .?i5I'ifiQlg:- y QQ jxtiij-'Qaghilmnsgvrv V-Adwpn M f 'W' -7 NYT- 0 T Q4 i i h Wldes read E5 nouwvvil l 6 p 'ULHM' ' ef Q N i 1, 1-vm ,lieu-lily-ii .ov1.i1,n:-.i-,1 ii., it rvl lu RS .two soxs iz.
