My memory ealls me bark to the time, 47 years ago, when as a little expectant youngster plodding' my way up the hill to enter sehool for the tirst time. The sw-hool buildina. a mueh smaller structure, stood immediately north of the one whit-h you and I entered so many times for so many years sinee. This building' was of brielc, two rooms on the tirst floor, and two which eouhl be thrown into one room upstairs. I, of course, entered what then was ealled the Chart Vlass-now the Pri- mary. Vlle were seated with our bar-ks to the wall, desk at our side with a primitive pigeon hole beneath for our slate and peueils. Our Primary teaeher was Miss Sarah XVilliams: other teaehers as near as I eau reeall for about this time were Miss Rebeeea Castator, Miss Nannie Knode. Mr. Hughes and Mr. Mathers. Teachers in those days had Very little professional traininu' outside of what experience they obtained in the elass-room. l am quite sure the Class work was presented in a very dift'erent way to the way found in the class room today. We had very eonseientious and hard working teachers in those days. You must remember the pupils of that time are filling' the responsible positions of the world life of today. 1923 EPITOIVIE At 1110 111110 111-1-1'11111s11' 1111-111111111-11 11ilQ'1'l'S1011'11 l11S1't1X'1'l'l'11 111'1'NL'111, 111111 found S110 11'11s g1'1111'1110'. And especially is this the case with .1 Senior Class, tl1e 1l1E'111lJ8I'S of which are soon to change their entire prozrani which has seen them through many happy years. These words are addressed to the Senior Class,- Some four years ago a very green young' man came into the llagerstown High School as acting principal and it so hap- pened that a very green freshman class was also introduced to the mysteries of High School life at the same time. Being on an equal footing' as far as coloring' mat- ter is concerned we linderstood each other perfectly and got along' together in line shape. This feeling of good fellowship has grown as we have hoth dropped some of our childish ways and we are now facing' a hreak in sehool ties. l want to thank this class for the tol- erance which has heen shown of the many mistakes which a liegiiiiiiiig' teacher makes. You have been then, in reality an experi- mental class lint l oIl'er no apologies for the result of my lirst experiment. A gain, I forgive you for the actions, etc., which I have tolerated, so we will halance the account and call it square, assuring' you that you. hold the place in my heart wlnch the first horn always holds. We should take pride in the fact that this is the largest graduating- class in our history. live reuret that we did not tinish our work in the new huilding. hut we are sure that our work in the remodeled huildinu. although l1H111D01'0fl from lack of space, has heen eflicient. Now. Pals, just a, word in parting: NVe spoke of grcenness 21 while auo: a person can he too wise too soon and it is a reniarkahle fact that those who retain their chlorophyll longest arc heard from when we have lost sight of those who changed color quickly. Success does 11ot come in anything without hard work: roll up your sleeves and don 't he afraid to get your hands dirty. Durina the first few days of this journey obstaeles were many. Sea- sielcness prevailed. During tl1e tirst year of our journey only two fell by the wayside. that is, never to resunie their trip again, Lynn Davis and Charles Sniith. Several disenibarlied only to continue their eourse on another ship. Anton: those were Forrest Hahn, Norris Souders, Virginia l'nthank, Pauline Shivery. Maude Davis. lieoiza l'etty and Paul Sniith. - After a sunnner of reparation and a general instalation of equipment, we again set sail with more deterlnination than ever. Those taking' this eourse were Marguerite Xvildllliill, Ellner Teniple, Edith Met'raehen, Elsie lloladay. George Cain and Florence Wynne. Although our losses had been heavy, our gains brought us baek to our original nu111ber. Those who joined our expedition were David Lilly, Blanche Petty, Douglas Pieree, Eva White and Agnes Adrian. The dawn of the eighth day of September, 1921, proelainied for us another eventful day, for on that day, twenty-eight brave erewsinen set sail still bound for port, Excelsior. During this, our third year, we proved our right as leaders -OU1' untlineliing' tirnnu-ss to dear old llopewell fby eonstant loyalty as friends. workers.-and boosters. Two of our nieinbers left us this year, Ruth Gladfelter and Garnet Vores. Harvey Petty joined us and with twenty-eight nienibers we faced the oppor- tunities of the fourth year, our Senior year. By this time we had gained experi- ence. We had found more lieaeon lights on English. We also gained a new captain, Keith Fai-low. lt was with the same spirit that. we faeed our future. Determined never to give up the ship now! Only two of our nienibers left us this late in our journey. Huy Johnson and Blanehe Petty. Clara llill, lrwin tifurtis, Mable Sanders and Dorothy Sebring' joined us. and we are now sailing' with a nieinbership of twenty-six. The term started with IIS poor fellows wondering' l1ow warm the water was in the Swimmin' Hole-and how tl1e fish were hitin', and many other things. lt was 11ot long' lllltil we counted these thinus as pleasant memories and resolved to make the most of our school work. We wish to say that we have enjoyed Olll' work and will endeavor to make every year hetter than the last, a thing to I't'lll0ll1l7Cl' when we enter the new l1llllCl1l1Q,'. Olll' enroll ment follows. The classes consist of Seventh and liiejlitli grade of this school and out-lying sehools Ellltl optionally of the Ninth grade ol' this school and a very limited number ol' upper elass girls. On account of the limited facilities no advaneed elassts eould be ol'l'ei-e.i and many students interested in Home lfleononiies could not be admitted into the present classes. The Seventh and Eighth grade girls from the East and West Schools have been coming' in to have their sewinu' onee a week instead of Miss Sheets uoine to each of the schools once every two weeks, The Seventh grade girls are becoming' very skilled with the needle and will wait llllfll they are in the Eighth grade before studying' the seienee side of llonie Economics. The Ninth grade girls in addition to serving' hot lunch are having sewing' three times a week. The Eiglitli and Ninth grade girls have started and very successfully man- aged the Cafeteria for this year. This is very useful and practical for the girls as well as beneficial for the pupils and teachers who patronize it. MANUAL TRAINING This department has not had as large an enrollment this year as might have been expected but may it be said that quality eounts. Wie are SllI'8 that this department is deserving' of a name. lts equipment has been more than doubled. ln 11ew 41llklf1'IQl'S it will be able to otter new eeurses where joints and knots shall be no giants to be fea1'ed. Very useful articles have been turned outq dressing' tables, library table, jardiniere stands, pedestals, hall trees, taborets, and loot-stools as well as a cedar chest and chests for hopes and valuables. To next year let us look, where new 4pxar.ers and machine etluiplneut will make possible work on an extensive basis. COMllIERCIAIi lJEPARl'MI'IN'l' One of the busiest places in t-he town of llaeerstown may be found in the little room on the northwest eorner of the annex building' to Hagerstown llieh School-the Commercial room. From eight o'eloek in the morning' until three- thirty in the afternoon the typewriters are constantly click-cliekreliekine' as students labor industriously for perfect. copies. Bookkeeping' students work periods overtime endeavorine' to Iind a solution to some puzzling' problem or to locate the mistake in their cash balance. Shorthand students throne' in a11d out at all periods, getting' information regarding some puzzling' rule, making' up a lesson missed, or perhaps re-writing' words missed in a previous lesson. All are striving' for perfection in their li11Q of work. lt. has been the intention during' the year of 1922-225 to surround the Conte mcreial Department with an atmosphere that not only would attract the best students to the work, but that also would make thel loafers and ineompetents feel as much out of place in that work as in any other line of work in school. And this has been accomplished. There has been no visible lack of interest dis' played during' the whole eight months just finished. It is becoming more and more a reality that 'ithe purpose of education should he to develop in each pupil the knowledge. ideals. interests. habits, and powers, whereby he will find his place. and use that place to shape both him' self and society towa1'd nobler ends. And thus t.he tfommereial studies have their place not only in the course of study of those who intend to pursue further study along' Connnereial lines but also in the course of study of those who pur- pose to follow some entirely diiferent line of work. This may be responsible for the considerable increase in enrollment during' the year 1922-23 over that of previous years. SEMESTER FIRST EP L P, :ez .
