Henry Ames wrote m hls wlll and pay over to Washmgton Umverslty for the use of the O Fallon Poly techmc Instltute the sum of S100000 Henry Ames be lleved m the future useful ness of the mstltute He had watched It grow from 1ts start as the Ellot Semmary 1n 1853 Hls frlend was Colo nel John O Fallon for whom the school was renamed ln 1854 These men and other leadlng c1t1zens llked thls school whlch was dedxcated to the purpose of prov1d1ng the means of a thorough and complete educatlon wxth partlcular view to practlcal usefulness Thus was the begmmng of St Louls first vocatlonal school Thls movement gamed natxonal recogmtlon when Congress passed the Land Grant Act ln 1862 Thls act enabled the Federal Government to pro vlde pubhc lands upon wluch the varlous states were to establlsh colleges of agrxcul ture and mechamcal arts Durmg the passlng years the O Fallon Instltute served and grew By 1868 Washing ton Umverslty had erected a new bulldmg for the Instl tute at a cost of 8500000 Thxs hlgh cost brought on problems that 1 n d 1 c a t e d that the educatlonal pur poses of the lnstltute mlght be slxghted so the trustees of Washmgton Umverslty offered to sell the new build 1ng and to gxve the legacy of 3100000 bequeathed by Henry Ames to the St Louxs Board of Pubhc . . Schools for the total prxce of 3280000 Thxs speclal prlce mcluded an agreement ln Writing that the Board should provlde technlcal and technologlcal mstruc t1on for those engaged xn and preparmg for mechanl cal or other pursults and should assoclate the name of Henry Ames w1th such educatlonal purpose forever The Board agreed bought and assumed 1tS new obl1 gatlon Sxnce most of the students worked durlng the day evemng school classes were scheduled the Hrst term opemng on October 29 1868 Calvln M Wood ward was the first Prmcxpal He later became known as the father of manual tram establlshmg the St Louls Manual Tralnlng School 1n 1879 Doctor Woodward had become assoclated wlth the Washmgton Un1vers1ty and wxth 1ts cooperatlon he was able to start the manual tra1n1ng school However hls work as Prlnclpal of the OFallon Polytechnlc Instl tute was restralned by a lack of understandmg from hls superlors By the year of 1890 the St Louls Board of Educatlon thought well enough of Dr Woodwards manual tra1n1ng school to authorlze an experlmental manual tra1n1ng class at the L Ouverture Elem e n t a r y School It was only a short tlme before thls klnd of ed ucatlon was recognlzed as worthwhlle and grade school classes mn sewmg printmg , . . ,, .
