for THE HADLEY ADDITION The Board of Education began planning the new combined gym and auditorium in 1950. In 1952 a preliminary survey was made. Shortly after, the first drawings were made. The Gym was designed to conform to requirements of the Intercollegi- ate basketball standards. The final plans were completed on March 10, 1953, under the direction of Mr. V. Harry Rhodes. The Auditorium seats 1700 people and is built like a theater with an orchestra pit, 176 colored lights. and a telephone system throughout the building. At the rear of the auditorium there is a projection room, with place for three movie projectors and a slide projector. All the lights are controlled from one large panel just off the stage. The new Gym seats 2500. The Gym has fourteen baskets, and three practice games can be played at one time. The Gym has folding bleachers, and folding doors which are electrically operated. These doors are 27 ft. high and 115 ft. long, they will separate the one large gym into two smaller ones. The Gym floor is laid out for many games like volley ball, tennis, shuffle board, and broad jumping. This Gym and Auditorium waf: built for two reasons. The first is Hadley has always needed a large Aud. The second is that the Public High Schools have always needed a Gym in which to play their tour- nament games, and in the past have rented a gymnasium for these games. The Hadley location was chosen because Hadley is located in the central part of the city.
