TABLE OF CONTENTS Activities Page 4 Seniors Page 31 ACTIVITIES Since the yearbook goes to press in January, Winter and Spring events that are used in the book are those of the previous year. Thus we begin this look at school life where we left off in last year's book ... Winter of 1987. It covers activities in the Spring and then Fall of 1987. Ms. Jeanine Laverty, a professional storyteller came to the school to share stories with Grades K-4 and to explain the art of storytelling so the youngsters would also share their own creations with brothers and sisters at home. Local American Legion Oratorical Contest Winnwea were Meghan Kiernan, winner Tracy Johnson, 2nd place, Tammy Waite, 3rd place. Meghan who spoke about the 6th amendment went on to win the Warren County division placed 4th in District Four competition ... highest ever for a H-L student. GRIEF SEMINAR A grief seminar dealing with feelings of loss took place over 5 days in January to teach students how to let go of pent up emotions. Much group discus- sion took place as well as writing po- ems and meditating. Ms. Mimi Reid co- ordinated the activities along with Ms. Marilyn Patton from Saratoga County. Elementary students dressed as gypsies to encourage everyone to earn a gypsy certificate by reading with a partner 15 minutes a day for 5 days. FACE PAINTINGS were done in the Elementary Art Room to add color and interest in showing each student's favorite character Don Fangboner, Director of the Lake George His- torical Association visited fourth graders and talked about the Revolutionary War. He talked about the duties dress of the typical soldier including all he had to bear such as carrying his own wooden bowls, tin cup, tin plates, musket, bayonet other equipment. Three times during the year students from the high school middle school went to television station WRGB (channel 6) in Schenectady to present student news on Student Spectrum. YOUTH LEADERSHIP DAY Members of the Hadley Luzerne Chapter of Students Against Drunk Driving attended a Youth Leadership Day February 23rd in Al- bany. The theme “Life Be in It encouraged youth to take an active role in developing and promoting healthy lifestyles for themselves and others. The goals for the day were to motivate students towards discovering and adapting more healthy lifestyles, to expose students to prevention strategies which can be implemented within their own schools and to emmpower students with skills for becoming more effective leaders. The S.A.D.D. group is deeply comitted to the traditional philosophy that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. One important focus of prevention lies in strengthening the personal and social skills of individuals. Aside from Hadley Luzerne Central School students also attended from Catholic Central High School, Coxsackie Athens High School, LaSalle Institute, and Cohes High School. 8 JOURNEY FOR SIGHT PARTICIPANTS LIONS CLUB AWARDS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL VISITORS COME TO THE SCHOOL Visitors from a Museum in the Capital District came to Miss Robert's class- room to show relics from the 19th cen- tury to better acquaint students with life in the ole days. Cooking, clean- ing, farm utensils were shown. Weatherman Joe Moskowitz from Albany television station WNYT, Channel 13 presented an Apple lie computer, monitor and disc drive to Miss Collen Wright and second graders Warren Bennett, Laura Strathearn. The class was one of the winners in the Know Your Weather contest by the station. To win stu- dents had kept vital weather statis- tics as shared on nightly weather- casts. Below, students are tested for diabetes Not only all students had the opportunity but also the entire staff. SPELLING BEE WINNERS Left to right. Heather Al- len. Matt Stutz. Stacy Reynolds. Students at all levels participated in a se- ries of spelling bees district wide with winners getting spe- cial prizes. The United States 18th Army Band from Fort Devens, Mass, presented two shows at HLCS. At two assemblies students were en- joying the combination of jazz, rock, pop, and country music to the extent of students dancing in the aisles and in front of the stage. Band members joined in by not only performing on stage but in the aisles. The show band consisted of 17 males and 3 fe- males. Sgt. Rick Prescott was the band di- rector. They perform throughout upper New York State and New England. SPIRIT WEEK Last year's Seniors dominated the annual Spirit Week competitions winning with a total accu- mulation of 48.5 points. Last year's sopho- mores were second with 43.5. the freshmen of a year ago came in third at 34.5 and the juniors, (this year's senior class) came in last at 27.5 .. but even they found reason for a chant “We're number 4. we're number 4! Activities included a rockathon, extra pledges, a spell- ing bee, pre-team sweats, nerd day, hawaiian day. Blue White day, bonus points for buttons, the spirit chain, the lip synch contest, the spirit cheer and spirit relay. And of course there were those two Olympic days where we saw such events as jello eating, an orange pass flipper race, obstacle race, a balloon carry lifesaver pass, ping pong ball search, marsh- mellow eating contest a feather race and an instant decoration contest. JUNIOR PROM ONCE IN A BLUE MOON was the theme of the May 9, 1987 Junior Prom. Spectrum played at the Ra- mada Inn where classmates voted Amber Deuel and John Pickens Queen and King. 1987 - 88 SCHOOL YEAR SECOND GRADE CLASSES released helium balloons hoping they'd land in some part of the U.S. where someone would find one and send back a letter Indeed two letters did come back, both from the Massachusetts area. The second graders were celebrating the fact they live in the U.S. and have freedoms granted to us all via the Constitution. Kindergartners took advantage of beautiful Fall days to enjoy the outside. Fourth graders brought items of interest for sharing inside. •till MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS GO TO THE PACK FOREST IN WARRENSBURG SEVENTH GRADERS wrote and illustrated their own stories and then read them to students in grades K-4. HALLOWEEN BLAST OFF! A sizzle, puff of smoke and it's up. up and away as students at the Middle School fire off their home made rockets, a yearly Fall ritual. FINER THINGS! French students took a field trip to the Hyde Museum in Glens Falls to examine examples of the best in French art. PREPARING FOR JOB MARKET During English classes a representative from DeVry Institute talked to seniors about preparing for their career future. He emphasized need for math and science skills 23 The Structures Class com- pleted a model bridge build- ing assignment after study- ing the history of bridges and the use of trusses. Mo- del bridges 3x3x10 were de- signed and tested for strength. Total weight of the bridges averaged 23 grams or 2 3rds of an ounce. Kevin Wheaton's bridge exceed- ed 85 pounds without show- ing any signs of failure. 1 8th inch square basswood and model airplane glue were used in construction. Popular storyteller Jeanine Laverty returned to HL in November to again present area tales about customs, people, and places in the Adirondacks as well as other classic stories to students in the elementary grades. 24 ASSEMBLIES The Schuylerville Community The- atre Trouping Players visited HLCS and presented “The Magic Carpet Story for students in grades K-4. Andy Pratt of Bolton Landing pre- sented a slide show and demonstra- tion about mountain climbing in Ec- uador to students in grades 9-12. In the process he had student volun- teers. Elementary School Book Fair Parent-Teacher Conferences 2S Denise Shattuck was honored by President Reagan when he presented her with a medal for bravery. She, her mother, and Donna Racette also met Congressman Gerald Solomon as well as other dignitaries including Edwin Meese. Attorney General and William Sessions, Director of the F.B.I. The annual blood mobile netted 64 units this year which was above the expected quota bringing smiles to Red Cross workers. The high school band provided an assembly program for the One class or organization after another knows the way to reach elementary grades in the Fall a student is through his her stomach ... thus a rash of bake sales! The weight room in the bomb shelter took on new dimensions with the addition of stationary bikes and rowing machines in addition to the universal. Right. Michelle White was hostess to Diane Tuckfield of Sydney Australia during January Diane was on her Summer break at the time Diane pointed out the school day is about the same as here in terms of hours per day USA music and food reaches down under too. Diane did enjoy her first snowmobile ride here though.
