HI-LIGHTS 1987 A book of memories from Hadley Luzerne Central School, Lake Luzerne, New York Presented by the Class of 1987 Yearbook Advisor: MR. DON RACETTE Yearbook Editor: REBECCA MOSHER Yearbook Staff: Roette Allen, Janine Bailey, William Bills, Cheryl Bourdeau, Susan Briner, Kathleen Cook, Cindy Gorham, Marci Mason, Duane Moulton, Jennifer Parsons, Julie Philips, Jill Picioccio, Kathleen Pickens, Lori Pike, Rynay Randolph, Michele Ross, Robyn Wilber WE REMEMBER Danny was a tall and handsome man with a personality that everybody loved. His smile was warm and friendly. He was a kind and caring friend that was always willing to listen. Danny filled a certain part of the lives of the people he knew. He will always be remembered. Danny strove for excellence on the athletic field, in school, and in life. Danny had a strong committment to his family, friends and country. He served his Country as a private in the United States Marines. The consideration he showed for others was overwhelming and will never be forgotten. No longer should we ask the question why did Danny get taken away from us. But instead Thank God for letting us know and love Daniel P. Rumpf. Daniel P. Rumpf Tina Fonzo, a member of the Class of '88 was a well rounded person. Her love for sports did not overshadow her studies. She was a member of the National Honor Society and also participated in field hockey, basketball, and tennis. Tina didn't waste a moment of living. Her energy and perception filled every classroom and athletic team. Somehow she was driven to catch up with her dreams and goals, always questioning and challenging to know and excel. She loved the humor of everyday craziness, poking fun, never missing an opportunity to imitate, twisting bizarre words and bringing laughter to all around her. On the court and the field, Tina felt at home, loving competition and driven to win, but most of all ... motivated to improve. Tina Fonzo We all remember Dan Scott, also a member of the Class of '88, as a friend, companion and classmate. He was active in his community through Boy Scouts and the 4-H Club. Dan was also an active member of his class and he was in the National Honor Society. He was a guy known for his individual style and his ability to laugh at life even while he accepted its challenge. During the years that we knew Dan, his image was gradually changing from the old cowpoke to Mr. Cool and Sophisticated. Through his adventure stories and love for mode music he had a lingering effect on all with whom he came in contact. Dan, our friend, you rode off into the Sunset long before we were ready to let you go. TABLE OF CONTENTS ■ Activities Page 4 Seniors Page 33 Athletics Page 75 fciXU v- fiOO)! m ACTIVITIES Although our yearbook is distributed in late April, it goes to press in January. Therefore, any late Winter or Spring activities of the current school year cannot be included until next year's yearbook. Thus the Winter and Spring activities shown on the next few pages are from 1986. Just as this publication captures in photos the year at H-L, Mr. Racette's Mass Media II Class captures on vid- eo tape happenings in and about schools from being in the classroom, to filming concerts, special assemblies and sports. In the Spring of '86 they also produced a new program of hu- man interest stories once a week which was shown on Cable TV 10 to the three surrounding towns; Lake Luzerne, Hadley, and Cornith. Several times during the school year students went one step farther with television in that they went to WRGB in Schenectady to participate in Student Spectrum a student news program. Members of the community were invited to come to Hadley Luzerne and serve as volunteers in the class- room. This consisted of being an aide to the teachers in many ways. The volunteers benefited as much as the children in that they saw the activities going on in the various classes and were able to appreciate the work load the teachers carried in educating our children. SPIRIT WEEK without questions is the activity that all students go all out to participate in during the year. All inhibitions are gone on this one. The surf wasn't up but showing some leg was or flexing some muscle. Events went on for the entire week with special surprises as well as scheduled days such as Hat and Sunglasses Day and Nerd Day. 6 The special Olympics always draw the entire high school into either participating or cheering involving the most absurd entertaining events. Bubble gum blowing contest Chinese Auction SPRING BLOODMOBILE THE MOOT COURT allowed students to learn to deal with the pressures of much detailed study before presenting a case to others. MAGIC READING involved elementary students in reading many story books. Fourth grader Craig Chanler represented HLCS in the Saratoga County spell- ing bee. Craig lasted through 5 rounds handling such words as magnify and seventy but was stumped on the word vegetable. He believes the mistake came from just plain nervousness. Who says studying Social Studies is all work and no fun! TOGA PARTY It's been said everybody talks about the weather but no one can do anything about it. Well, one of the professional weathermen who reports the weather. Norm Sebastian from a Captial District television sta- tion visited elementary students to explain weather terminology. Ray Hoffman who scored 1013 career points in his high school basketball playing received a plaque from Board of Education member Mrs. Sandra Weiss. Once again Mr. Ted Firth took the high school band to Albany to play some selections for various people. Among these present was Assemblyman Bobby D'Andrea who had the photo below taken and of course autographed and sent to the school. Two members of the Class of '86 display a quilt they made when their class put together many years ago while in elementary school. Mrs. Gereau's fourth graders made a visit to the old one room school house located downtown. Lake Luzerne. They dressed in authentic costumes of the period of years ago and took the names of students who attended the school, sitting in their desks. A number of senior citizens who either taught in the school or were students in it attended the re-enact- ment. Among some of the dignitaries that spoke to the children, Lake Luzerne town historian Mr.Lester Thomas visited the classroom at H-L to give some local history. 1 BAND CONCERT MAY 1, 1986 CHORUS MIDDLE SCHOOL SPRING CONCERT SPRING ARTS-MUSIC FESTIVAL JUNE 1986 FLAG DAY JUNE 1986 HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS GRADUATION JUNIOR PROM MAY 10, 1986 The theme of the current Senior classes Junior Prom a year ago was Paradise. OUR SENIOR TRIP IT'S UP, UP AND AWAY as Sixth Graders at the Stuart M. Townsend Middle School design, build and then fire off their rockets as part of a Science unit. One of the more popular activities in the Fall, the launching always attracts not only the builders, but other students and par- ents. A BALLOON RELEASE by elementary students took place October 23rd on Drug Awareness Day. The Hadley Luzerne Lioness Club purchased the balloons which were inflated by S.A.D.D. Chapter members and distributed to all the elementary students. Some stu- dents attached name address cards so that they might get a re- sponse from the finder of the bal- loon. All balloons were released at 2 pm on the ball field near the audi- torium. ROCK-A-THON Over $6800 was raised from the rock-a-thon as about 100 high school students brought in their own rocking chairs and plenty of support material to carry them through 15 hours. Monies raised went towards a scholar- ship fund. A VISIT TO THE CEMETARY is part of the English 10 writing assignments. Students look over the various tombstones, find a name and whatever information catches their fancy and then create their own composition about someone from the combination of imagination and information obtained. And the money needed to pay for our yearbook does not come from taxes. The only funding comes from the sale of books and advertising. Since we sell the book for about two dollars less than actual cost, the only way we can make ends meet to produce a book is to depend upon advertisements and patron ads. Without that help we would not be able to put forth a book of this quality each year. So as Yearbook Advisor I want to thank all of those who have kindly supported the book in these pages. Know without your backing there would not be a book to enjoy. I hope the reader will appreciate as our Yearbook Staff does the generosity of our advertisers ... and support them. Ah, bitter was the trial to part from one so good as you. You are not forgotten loved one nor will you ever be, As long as life and memory last. We will remember thee.
