HI-LIGHTS 1986 A book of memories from Hadley Luzerne Central School Lake Luzerne, New York Presented by the Class of 1986 Yearbook Advisor: MR. DON RACETTE Yearbook Editor: VICKI FINELLI Yearbook Club: Bryan Barrett, Kelly Ferrara, Michelle Hayes, Amy Johnson, Dianne Lama, Kelly McBride, Sara Powers, Annamarie Ran- dolph, Matt Raydcr, Brenda Starr, Brandon Smith, Robin Ziegler DEDICATION The seniors, this year, had no problem picking a dedication for the yearbook. Our choice has spent much of his life working with the best of his abilities. He served in the U.S. Navy, then proceeded to work at Niagara Mohawk. Later he worked at Brockport and Penfield prior to coming to HLCS. He has dedicated 12 years of his life to this school. We, the Seniors, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Leo Stengel. Mr. Stengel, you have not only been our principal for the past four years but you also have been a friend. Many of us have come to you with our problems and counted on you to make us smile. Somehow you were always capable of doing this, and believe it or not your jokes were greatly appreciat- ed (sometimes even funny!) 2 This dedication is only a small portion of our apprecia- tion. It is not possible to thank you enough. You are very much loved and cared for by the Class of '86 and as we move on we will miss you a great deal but there is no way we could ever forget you! Thanks again. Mr. Stengel you have made life enjoy- able at Hadley Luzerne Central School. Therefore any late Winter or Spring activities of the current school year cannot be included until next year's yearbook. Thus the Winter and Spring activities shown on the next few pages are from 1985. SPIRIT WEEK Gets everyone warmed up to drive away the Winter blahs. From dressing up for each of the special days such as Punk Day, Sunglasses Hat day, Woodsman- Long-John Day and others to taking part in the H-L Olympic events of pie-eating, tricycle racing, mum- my-binding! or bubble gum blowing, this is a week to be remembered! Last year a pep rally and lip synch contest rounded out the events. —— CAREER DAY is a special day every two years when the high school Guidance department invites area people in various professions to come to the school to talk to small groups of students about their jobs. Students learn the advantages and disadvantages of various occupations. They are able to ask questions about the numerous careers and thereby being better able to plan their own future work. 1985 REGENTS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS included Eric Senecal, Robert Jones, Jeannine Stephenson, Ward Philips, Kevin Clute, Curtis Schreiner, Kenneth Sehlmeyer, Larry Hall and Marilyn Sutliff 7 JUNIOR PROM fll The Prom Court including last year's king queen were Tim Hanlon, Missy Flansburg, Christine Levett, Gary Hayes, Sara Powers, Raymond Hoffman, Vicki Finelli, Andy Fisk, Amy Johnson, Jim Nevins, Annemarie Grant, Roger Saheim, Bryan Barrett, Curt Schreiner, Michelle Hayes, Shelly Rozell From photos being taken by and inside the auditorium prior to the dance, through antics around the pool, banter at the table and more formal photos, it was a great Prom night. Sea of Love was the theme. Music was performed by the Bob Mitchell Band. Again Hidden Valley Ranch was the place. The date May 18, 1985 and the memories are etched in our minds. 9 HONOR SOCIETY N.Y.S. Assemblyman Bobby D'Andre presented a Legislative Resolution of Commendation to Giani and Mike Benevento. They had selected the name of the bald eagle used for a display and educational purposes. The contest had been open to all children in erades K.-8 across New York State. Their suggested name, Tahawus, an historic Indian name for Mount Marcy meaning Cloud Splitter was winner over 3000 entries. The Spring Honor Society Induction increased the size of the Hadley-Lu- zerne School Chapter. A historic American flag was shown elementary grade students as Lester Thomas Lake Historian talked about early American flags in our country. GRADUATION 1985 FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL YEAR 1985-86 9 (9MB) vV «oie ..;£•« • M September 4,1985 . . . back to school. For elementary students it's a brisk stepping bunch anxious to find out their new teacher and classmates. For high schoolers, it's a bit of a slower walk as they discuss what happened over the summer. For parents it's lugging along younger children to the office as they find what rooms other brothers sisters are to report too. Quickly into the thick of things elementary grades get into numerous projects, just one of which includes second graders making bird feeders. Meanwhile the Junior Class starts the maga- zine sales drive. Students from both the Middle School high school participate twice a year in a television program “Student Spectrum. HL Students travel to WRGB in Schenectady where the show is videotaped. Of course life at the Middle School also swings into high gear right from the first day of school in September. Student Council was revived in the High School. Mr. Paul Abess was Advisor and offi- cers included Jenny Jo Parsons, Vice President; Kelly Ferrara, Secretary; Jim Nevins, President and Jeff Free- man, Treasurer. At the Middle School Student Council also had their slate of officers and at both schools there were two represen- tatives from each homeroom. SENIOR TRIP TO WASHINGTON r t B.O.C.E.S. Superintendent's Conference day dedicated to personal and professional growth for the teachers, who sat behind the desks for guest speakers while students had the day off. The 10th grade Regents English classes took a field trip to a local cemetary as a followup to their study of Edgar Lee Master's Spoon River Anthology. Mas- ter's collection of free verse poems is about 250 people in an imaginary town who speak from their graves about their lives. The students each chose a grave to write about, took a photo of that tombstone and then wrote a free verse poem as if by the person buried in the grave. The poems explored what the deceased might like to tell the world. flgg W The Jazz Ensemble and High School Band presented a Pops Concert at the Stuart M. Townsend Middle School in November Students in the two wood structure classes again built an open storage shed. Later in the year it was to be raffled off to raise money for scholarships. This year's building project was unique in that the students began the shed by using a builder's transit to dig and set the concrete footings below ground. They then laid ce- ment blocks which became the foundation for the building. This year s school play was The Prisoner of Second Avenue by Neil Simon. Robyn Wilber and Brandon Smith had the lead roles. Others in the cast were Julie and David Philips, Dawn Pipek and Yvonne Ander- son. Mr. David Otoupal did the Set Design. Amie Rayder helped backstage. Mrs. Betsy Wilber assisted director Mr. Don Racette. Mr. Racette pointed out this is among Neil Simon's finest comedies, originally performed on Broadway in 1972. Of course Mr. Otoupal's Art Class IS always into one project or another. Meanwhile at the Middle School not all students were solemn about their studies. Familiar sights in November included the preponder- ance of stuffed animals that were being created in Mrs. Harriet Case's Child Development Class. M rs. Clarissa Newton's Special Skills class were in- volved in numerous projects including making their own breakfast. The annual BLOODMOBILE sponsored by Student Council was another success. Despite poor weather, 54 units were collected. Special Skills students enjoyed going to Mr. Finlayson's tree farm and cutting their own Christmas tree. Among townspeople visiting the second graders was Mr. Sehlmeyer who talked about houses. When it 'tis the season to be jolly one of the first happenings is to decorate the Christmas tree in the Guidance office. And it also is a time to sign up to purchase a Christmas cane and card for those special friends. The Honor Society sold well over a thousand canes this year. A couple of “firsts in December this year included seniors decorating their lockers and a noon-time vol- leyball tournament. With the onslaught of Winter sports, there also was a pep rally. ADDITIONAL GRADUATES At the beginning of the 1985-86 school year these students did not have enough credits or requirements to be considered a part of the Senior Class. Nevertheless by taking necessary classes and passing them during the school year, they would then be eligible for possible graduation with the Class of 1986. Bryan Adams just edged out Bruce Springsteen for favorite male singer with Phil Collins coming in third. Tina Turner was atop the list for female favorite followed by Pat Benatar and then Madonna. Huey Lewis and the News had more than double the nearest votes for favorite musical group. Foreigner was second and R.E.O. third. Rob Lowe and Tom Selleck had a tie for second. Goldie Hawn was voted favorite actress with three others tied for second . . . Heather Locklear, Heather Thomas, and Cristy Brinkley. Seniors were asked what is their favorite pro-sports team. The Dallas Cowboys came out first choice followed by the New York Yankees and the Washington Redskins.
