HI-LIGHTS 1985 A book of memories from Hadley Luzerne Central School Lake Luzerne, New York Presented by the Class of 1985 Yearbook Advisor: Mr. Don Racette Yearbook Editor: Missy Newton Yearbook Club: Kate Clarke, John Decker, Deborah Esser, Kelli Gorham, Ward Phillips, Michelle Picioccio, Samantha Poirier, Richard Rice, Michele Rozell, Korine Springer, Joe Tardif, Wendy Williams DEDICATION During the making of the yearbook, the staff urges all seniors to participate to try to make the current book the best ever. The easiest task to get them to do is pick a dedication. Minds immediately focus in on a teacher who makes them laugh, was easy to talk to and did his best to help the students learn. This year we chose Mr. John Pickens. Mr. Pickens, you are that friend, teacher, and confidante. You made coming to class fun, but didn't let it get out of control. You took your teaching seriously and we learned you were there to talk to. Most importantly, you talked to us and valued our opinion. You didn't limit our questions to school hours. You opened your house to us too. For all of this we thank you. Mr. John Pickens TABLE OF CONTENTS Activities Page 5 Seniors Page 33 Faculty Staff Page 102 Advertisements Page 115 3 ACTIVITIES SPRING 1984 THE Shelly Rozell was crowned queen Curt Schreiner was selected as king. The theme of the prom was A Night in Heav- en. Music was provided by the Bob Mit- chel Band at Hidden Valley Ranch. Members of the prom court were Kevin Clute, Paul Matuszak, Ed Moulton, Chuck Knotek, Bill Cirillo, Jeannine Ste- phenson, Natalie Belanger, Debbie Esser, Kelli Gorham and Missy Newton. Mr. David Otoupal was the Master of Ceremonies. Mr. George Smith Miss Gretchen Steen were class advisors. Sharon Vanderzell was responsible for prom design. Chaperones were Mr. Mrs. George Smith, Mr. Mrs. John Pickens, Mr. Mrs. Donald Racette Miss Gretchen Steen JUNIOR PROM! HLCS is always proud of our New York State Regents scholarship winners. Last Spring those winners seen with Mr. Stengel were Chris Abbott, Mark Levett, John Stewart and Andy Lanfear. As has been the case in recent years, Juniors took a trip to Boston in conjunc- tion with their studies in Social Studies classes to get the perspective on Boston in American History. Area veterans took part in June on Flag day in ceremonies at the Middle School where a student designed flag was shown. Mr. Stuart Townsend, for whom the Middle School is named also was present for honors. The Spring Concerts culminated a year of music of all types. BACCALAUREATE The Class of 1984 had their Baccalaureate pro- gram Sunday June 17. Members of the class marched into the auditorium to the music of the theme from Mahogany. Prudence Young wel- comed all. Reverend Felter gave the invocation. Mark Levett read from the Old Testament. Tammy Hayes read from the New Testament. Richard Backus read a graduate's prayer. The class sang We made it through the Rain. Rev- erend Parsons gave the benediction. The reces- sional march was again the theme of Mahogany. Lisa Chandler was the pianist. GRADUATION THE1984-85 SCHOOL YEAR STARTS with parents and older brothers and sisters walking elementary students into the building. Mr. Stengel brings the high school together to lay the ground rules. Everyone is relatively reserved ... for the first day. Actually as time goes on you never know just how un-reserved things can get. As seen here Amy had her birthday remembered in a study hall with the delivery of balloon greetings by a clown! At The Stuart M. Townsend Middle School it's off to visit The Pack Forest in Warrens- burg. During Fall Environmental Education field days students go to 7 learning stations to find out about water dowsing, winter re- creation in the Adirondacks, woodland manners, beaver management, soil conser- vation, star gazing and forest management. 13 THE ANNUAL ROCKET DAY is held in the Fall to culminate the study of flight. Students build their own rockets, constructing an airframe, nose cone, engine mount, fins and parachute. 17 In early November students at the Middle School were busy working with celebrities from PM Magazine as well as handling various art projects. At the high school students were learning about voting machines. They had to register a few days before voting; learned how to read the ballot and then how to actually use a voting machine. Incidentally in the straw vote among the high schoolers Reagan had 85% of the vote. Mondale 13% and Hall 2% In actual voting that was 194 for Reagan, 30 for Mondale and 3 for Hall. Two traditions took place in late November and early December the cafeteria staff went all out in serv- ing a scrumptious Thanksgiving din- ner .... and students reached way out . with their arms to donate blood in the annual Red Cross Bloodmobile drive held at Hadley Luzerne. Whether it's displaying proudly hats made for us by a senior citizen who liked our baked cookies given them at Christmas- time (left photo) or just day to day enjoyment in the media center or the gymnasium (middle photos) or the daily contact with staff, and faculty members, for most of us at HLCS life at Hadley Luzerne will give us many moments to recall. MEMORIAL MR. WALTER MAXFIELD Ms. Kathryn DeLong taught second grade from 1965 until her death January 7, 1985.
