HI-LIGHTS 1984 A book of memories from Hadley Luzerne Central School, Lake Luzerne, N.Y. Presented by the Class of 1984 Yearbook Advisor: Mr. Don Racette Co-Editors Shawn Allen, Tara Tremaine Cindy Ziegler WE FONDLY REMEMBER THAT MAN IS A SUCCESS who has lived well, laughed often and loved much who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children who has filled his niche and accomplished his tasks; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had. Tammy Hayes and Prudence Young Mr. Donald Racette, Advisor and the high school chorus and band went to the South Mall in Albany to perform. The students were welcomed by State Senator Hugh Farley and State Assemblyman Alfonse D'Amato SPRING 1983 An assembly regarding efficient use of energy was an electrifying and hair- raising occasion in the early Spring These students who went on a field trip in the Spring to Boston were smiling a few days before the trip . . but dog-tired upon their return. However what a trip! The Social Studies students visited the U.S.S. Constitution and the Bunker Hill Pavilion. They also saw the New England Sea Aquarium and Quincy Market. A stroll along Marblehead Beach and a stop at the oldest candy store in Salem along with a visit to the haunting house of 7 Gables were quite a treat. The students had time to shop at Pickering Wharf. Another group of students, one week later on May 13 visited New York City including seeing the United Nations, going atop the World Trade Center Observatory and a look at the Statue of Liberty. A guided bus tour of New York City included Chinatown, and Greenwich Village. Dinner was at Mamma Leone's famous restaurant and they saw the Broadway musical Joseph the Amazing Technicolor Dream- coat . IT'S BEEN RUMORED THAT STRANGE THINGS happen in the Teacher's Room and perhaps at times that is so. In any case Mr. Pickens is seen standing next to a 6 foot long submarine that turned up for lunch one day for the faculty. JUNIOR PROM The prom court consisted left to right of Shirley Clements, Ed Han- lon, Dan Waterhouse, Michelle Quirion, Jill Ellis and Ted Rawson. Seated are the queen and King Mi- chelle Bain and Chris Brady. Other court members left to right are Pat Randall, Dawn Cowles, Kim Sutliff and Mike Avona. Standing with them are the 1982 Prom king and queen Lyndon Sutliff and Chris Skoglund. The prom held May 14th at Hidden Valley Ranch had “Dream Fanta- sy as its theme. Music was pro- vided by Bobby Dick and the Sun- downers. With the beginning of September the familiar yellow school buses which bring about 95% of our students to school began their runs. Summer romances, the luxury of just sunning around or having a full-time job making money turned to the task of again hitting the books, meeting new classmates, re- newing old friendships and biting the bullet to do better in school this year! HLCS was notified that Andrew Lanfear had been desig- nated a commended student in the 1984 National Merit Scholarship Program. Principal Leo Stengel noted Andy placed in the top five percent of over one million partici- pants in the twenty ninth annual merit program. The annual Fall pep rally did just that .. perked up students for another school year of rugged sports competition. At the Stuart M. Townsend Middle School WRGB News photographer Dom Figilomeni visited Art Classes. The high school Media Class also had students present to videotape his presentation for airing on Cable TV 10 and to learn some camera tips too. With the settling in of classes, students got into the daily routines of time in their special subjects (Music, Art etc) as well as getting to know new teachers who were around full time and part time. The congenial atmosphere of pleasant learning from friendly faces made the days right. With students field trips are always popular, such as this one. It was the Mass Media Class visiting a local radio station for an inside in-depth look at broadcasting. Other field trips meant going outside the building to fire off rockets that were home made and designed by industrious students. The BOCES program at Saratoga is an integral part of the school day for students from Hadley Luzerne. This year we took our yearbook camera to classrooms to capture some of the students in action. 14 Maureen Corrigan, Office Proc. The bonfire the night before the final football game of the season against Corinth was held on the playing field near the auditorium. Ambitious freshmen decided to sponsor the school play and got to work preparing 100 posters which were put up in the community; along with planning ticket sales, refreshments to be sold during intermission and other details. A Pops Concert featuring the band and dance band was performed in the cafeteria. A new sound system, some new instruments and the talents of the participants were shown to all. The Hadley Luzerne Elementary Media Center was the proud recipient of a twenty volume set of Adventure Series presented by the Thornton Burgess Society of Sandwich, Mass, to perpetuate the love of nature in young readers. Thornton Burgess was a naturalist and renown children's author who wrote such series as Mother West, Green Forest and Green Meadow. Fourth graders Michael Fosberry and Lydia McWain check the books with Mrs. Lois Root, Media Specialist. 18 There's a period of time that means just going to classes of course. But the Christmas season is close behind and decorating the traditional Guidance Christmas tree is always a pleasure. At sporting events there always those who are on hand to feed the hungry. The Varsity Club sold candy, baked goods and more while the sophomore class quenched thirsts with the selling of soda. SCHOOL PLAY CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN was the school play pre- sented November 17 and 18. The play was sponsored by the Freshmen Class and directed by Mr. Donald Racette. Characters in the play were Mr. Gilbreth played by John Decker; Mrs. Gilbreth played by Tammy Hayes. Their children were Tara Tremaine as Ernestine; Ward Philips as Frank, Tracey Clothier as Jackie; Angie Backus playing Danielle; Stephen Abbott portraying Bill; Christine Bor- man as Fran; Shawn Allen playing Anne, Julie Philips as Lillian and Jenny Jo Parsons as Martha. Robyn Wilber was the housekeeper; Eddy Bennett played the doctor; Prudence Young was a teacher and Mark Racette was Larry. Set design was by Daphne Mason. Behind the scenes personnel consisted of Dawn Allen, Shirley Clements, Mike Grant, Chris Brady, Ellen Smith and Tracy Waite. Cindy Ziegler was troubleshooter. Numerous faculty and community people were helpful in letting the group borrow furniture and props from the 1920 era as well as plants and other items used on the set. K-4 AND 9-12 nrrwr CHRISTMAS CONCERT A pinata in the Spanish classroom is a traditional Christmas season sight at Hadley Luzerne. It originated in Mexi- co and is a clay or paper-mache con- tainer which is hung from the ceiling on certain festivals and broken in a game by students with a stick or bat or broom so as to release its contents of candy. Sometimes it takes more than one per- son to take some hefty swings to be sure it breaks. Usually the scramble to get the candy precludes the person swinging, be- cause by the time his blindfold is tak- en off, the candy has been scopped up. Meanwhile grade school students are good as can be for Santa. A LOOK AT MIDDLE SCHOOLERS HL STUDENTS WIN HONORS • • Kelly Ferrara, a tenth grader, took first place in the local com- petition of the American Legion 47th annual oratorical contest. Ward Philips was second and Wayne Jones third. The purpose of the contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and apprecia- tion of the Constitution of the United States. Kelly, whose speech dealt with a draft for women, then went on to compete at the County Level and came in second place behind the winner from Lake George. John Stewart, a senior, was named winner of the annual Bausch Lomb Science Award. It recognizes the senior student at our school who has attained the highest scholastic standing in science sub- jects. Shelly Bain became only the fourth player in Section II schools to hit over 1,000 points in her basketball career. As the yearbook was going to press due to a deadline, there still was the possibility that she could become the overall high scorer, boys or girls, ever at HLCS! Curt Schreiner represented not only the school but the nation in Olympic tryouts. He placed four in the Nation in Biatholon Junior Competition. WE’VE GOT THE POWER! WE’VE GOT THE SPIRIT!! WE’RE NUMBER ONE!!! When it came to Volleyball, Girls Basketball and Boys Basketball, it was a triple success. As the Yearbook Deadline came both the Boys and Girls Basketball teams were on top of their respective leagues . . in number one position and looking very much like they would be winners overall. The Volleyball season which ended earlier did show HLCS league champs. Whether you were a senior ending a study about computers or a fourth grader just beginning to explore the modern world technology, at HLCS students had access to up to date equipment as well as state of the art ideas. The Music program at HLCS was enhanced in several ways. Because of a grant from the Interna- tional Paper Foundation, new equipment, new in- struments and a wider program were offered. An Artist in Residence also spent time in the classes as did a student teacher. 30 The Media Center is al- ways a good place to con- gregate for some serious research . . . and, yes, oc- casionally for a reprieve from study hall. But this year the Media Center in the high school was for- tunate enough to obtain some additional equip- ment to make studying more fun. Aside from new friends, new faces, new classes, there were some new changes and additions to the school system. Between the rear door of the auditorium and what has been referred to as the porta- ble classrooms, a walkway was put up to keep the wind and rain from elementary students making the trek there from the main school building. What at one time housed the fifth and sixth grades (the portable classrooms) and later housed Administration offices and more re- cently the kindergartens .... this year was converted to the Art (Elementary) and Mu- sic complex. Just prior to the deadline for our yearbook information, voters approved the purchase of two new school vehicles. Of course school buses are as much a part of H-L as the classes since the vast majority of students ride them daily. ADDITIONAL GRADUATES At the beginning of the 1983-84 school year, these students did not have enough credits or requirements to be considered as part of the Senior Class. Nevertheless by taking necessary classes and passing same during the school year, they would be eligible for possible graduation with the class of 1984. Everyone watches television ... a lot! The A Team rated the favorite show this year, followed by Simon and Simon and Fall Guy. (A year ago the favorite show of seniors was MASH.) The movie with the highest rating was Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Class was second and Risky Business came in third. All dealt with life in school . . although hopefully not realistically. (A year ago E.T. took top honors) Burt Reynolds is the Class of 84's favorite actor followed by Mr. T. and Tom Selleck. (A year ago Tom Selleck was on top.) Would you believe this year the Road Runner Bugs Bunny each got one vote! Favorite actress for the current class is Valerie Bertinelli; then Lucille Ball and Goldie Hawn. (Last year's seniors liked Lonnie Anderson, although Goldie Hawn was second then.) A senior without a radio is like a day without sunshine. The top radio station in popularity is Pyx 106. Y96 came in second and 107Q third. 99, 93 and 92 were trailing. (A year ago we didn't take a poll on favorite station.) Among the many songs heard on the radio the top three choices this year were Total Eclipse of the Heart, Rock of Ages, and Burning Down the House. (A year ago the favorite was Hard to Say I'm Sorry.) Rick Springfield got the most votes for favorite male singer with a three way tie for second . . Bryan Adams, Robert Plant and Billy Squire. (With the Class of 83 top vote getter was Rick Springfield.) Favorite female singer is Pat Benatar followed by Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks. (Last year Pat Benatar and 40 Joan Jett also ranked 1 2) Def Leppard led in Group favorites followed by Journey Loverboy. (A year ago Loverboy was on top.) (Last year we were told basketball was the favorite sport but we neglected to know whether it was for watching or doing.) This year we asked what sport do you Watch the most . . football was on top followed by baseball and ice hockey. As to participation in a sport . . Tennis and Volleyball tied followed by basketball. Bucky Dent rated as top sport star followed by Tony Dorsett and Mean Joe Green. (A year ago Glens Falls star Dave LaPoint was on top.) As to favorite sports team it's the Steelers, Yankees and Cowboys. (Last year the Cowboys were in first rather than the current third position.) There was a tie for favorite teacher between Ms. Mimi Reid and Mr. John Manley. (A year ago Mr. Al Zimmermann was on top.) Miss Jeanne Morristell who left a year back and Mr. John Pickens rated a tie for second and Mr. David Otoupal came in third. (A year ago Study Hall rated as favorite class.) This Year Study Hall came in second spot . . following Lunch . . . typing was third. Do you have a hero? (A year ago it was the father of the family.) This year the top three in order were Superman, Captain America and Mr. Zimmermann. Chris Brady even got a vote with President Reagen bringing in one and grandfather getting one. Last year's class and this year's class listed partying as the favorite out of school activity. Going out was second and driving cars third. For a vacation spot the favorite place this year was Florida. Hawaii came in second and California third. (A year ago Florida also was first.) Finally the seniors were asked to say a few words about their relationship with their parents. Just as a year ago, there were as many different answers as students in the class. Some of the answers this year included: They're good people My parents I get along well They are there if I need them. ok Great . . Close at times but sometimes not so great My father gives me money when I want it. We communicate easily. If it weren't for both of them, I wouldn't be here! . . can't live with them and can't live without them. not bad . . . but loud My parents and I don't always see eye to eye but mostly we understand each other. Weird, exciting wonderful Not too shabby they motivate me to do the right thing and discourage me from doing wrong blank close different viewpoints it's cool good friends alright . . so so It's there My parents are very good to me and generous We get along like a proper family should. We can always talk together. It's like the Marines! Seniors .. . the person who follows the crowd will usually get no farther than the crowd. The person who walks alone is likely to find himself in places that no one else has ever been before. Creativity in living is not without its difficulties. You see particularity breeds contempt. And the unfortunate thing about being ahead of your time is that by the time others finally realize you were right, they will say that they knew it all along. You have two choices in life. You can dissolve into the mainstream, or you can be different. To be different, you must be distinct. To be distinct you must strive to be what no one else but you can be.
