HI-LIGHTS1983 HADLEY LUZERNE CENTRAL SCHOOL LAKE LUZERNE, NEW YORK Presented By The Class of 1983 Yearbook Advisor: Mr. Donald Racette Co-Editors Gina Clute Dianne Stephenson DEDICATION MRS. MARY LOU HAYES In this day and age of movement it is quite unusual to find anyone who spends their professional career primarily in one spot. Fortunately for us, and our parents Mrs. Mary Lou Hayes has done just that. Over three decades of dedication to HLCS by Mrs. Hayes has been an abundance of happiness and educational gain for all of us. Mrs. Hayes not only was always supportive to her students but always followed them as they went from the elementary to high school and into the work-a-day world. Thank you Mrs. Hayes for being so geniunely concerned about us. Thank you for sharing you. A note from the Yearbook Advisor. It is not by accident we did not feature students in any of the above photos. My staff who were sent on numerous photo- graphic missions to “capture” activity with Mrs. Hayes for this dedication page (but don’t let her know!) continually came back with many photos with her class just swarming about her. “Mr. Racette they love her so much we can’t get shots of her alone.” We understand why. Anyone who has worked with, gone through her classes or just know her love her. Mary Lou you’re one of a kind! Best wishes. Personally I’ll miss seeing your car the first one in the lot each day. 2 HADLEY-LUZERNE. Thus it was chosen as the school drama which was presented April 2nd and 3rd, 1982. Directed by Mr Donald Racette the cast included Lynn Winchester, Diana Bovee, Mimi Gereau, Donna Racette, Dianne Ste- phenson, Aran Mull, Dave Hensley, Ward Philips, James Hamblin, Sally Smith, Jeff Miner, Shawn Allen, and Bobby Jensen. Tammy Hayes was “troubleshooter” and Dan Sehlmeyer handled lights. Jeff Miner was also stage man- ager. The story about the life of a girl who turns 17 was sensitive, modern and beautifully subtle in its portrayal of the young at heart. Left to right, the King and Queen and court Eric Powers, Diane Quirion, Rich- ard Salmon, Patti Duell, Jackie Ellis, Chris Skoglund, Lyndon Sutliff, Todd De- Marsh, Linda Keeler, Danny Rumpf, Dianne Stephenson, Wade DeMarsh The theme of the Prom was “The Best of Times.” Music was provided by the Preludes. Hidden Valley was the setting. JUNIOR Mr. George Smith, Junior Prom Advisor and Laurie Waite, Angela Russell and Walter McWain Chairperson Mark Thomas, Laurie Waite, Bobby Jenson, Michelle Gunthrun Eileen Rispone, Dan Sehlmeyer, Vic Grant and Amanda DeRosier PROM SPRING 1982 Mark Thomas, Laurie Waite, Amanda DeRosier and Victor 9 Jackie Ellis 1981 Queen congratulations the 1982 Queen Grant SPRING CONCERTS In May of last year all the members of Band, Chorus and Special groups presented two concerts. One was at the high school auditorium and the other at the middle school gymn. A large turnout of audience showed the music Depart- ment’s reputation for grand music is well deserved. MAY 1982 SPRING TIME 1982 TRIP TO BOSTON Students from the Social Studies Class of Miss Jeanne Morristell visited Boston. The students were busy seeing the many historical sights. Mr. John Pickens also took a group of students their trip was to New York City for a visit to the United Nations, the Statue of Liberty and other famous tourist stops. Aside from the Social Studies classes, there were other more localized field trips in the Spring by other teachers. These included trips to local industries in the tri counties by Mr. Thomas Roach, Industrial Arts Teacher. Students find the field trips not only educational but “fun”. They get a glimpse of the may factors of the past that affect lives today as well as practical suggestions for steps to their future. 12 SCHOLARS! The New York State Education Department granted Regents College Scholarships. The Scholarships awards were effective as of the 1982-83 academic year. Each Regents College Scholarship entitled the recipient to an award of $250 a year for up to five years of study at an approved program in New York State. HLCS winners were Paul Hensley, Lisa Pritchard, Lauren LaCasse who won a Regents Professions Education in Nursing Scholarship, Valerie Stone, Michelle Gereau, Amanda DeRosier, and Barbara Morrissey. The winners of the Regents College Scholarships are the candidates who earned the highest scores on either the American College Testing program or the College Board’s Scholastic Aptitude test. Members of the Hadley Luzerne chapter of the National Honor Society continued to grow with induction ceremonies held in the Spring. Pictured above is the entire Honor Society members. 13 A NEW SCHOOL YEAR arrived and with it high school and middle school students took to the airwaves of WRGB, Channel 6 in Schenectady. Approximately every five weeks during the school year the students videotaped a five minute newscast to inform people about what is happening in the school and to give a students’ viewpoint regarding education in general. High School participants tended to use the program as means of public relations to ade- quately keep the public informed. Middle School students had the opportunity to write their own scripts about special pro- jects taking place in their classes. Mr. Donald Racette again was Advisor for the Student Spectrum programs and noted in all cases, students were able to benefit by gaining poise and confidence from the tv shows. The programs aired at 6:25 a.m. In the early Fall the cafeteria took on a new look with students from Art classes painting a huge mural on the wall a new look for those lunchers daily. DANCES CAME BACK IN as students supported more dances in a given year than were available in past year. Y-96 dance and light shows were most popular followed by 107Q dances and light shows. HALLOWEEN Elementary students make their annual parade across the stage. The Lions Club also sponsored activities. ruto As part of the conditioning for playing football, in the Fall the team took to rafts and the challenge of the cold white water rapids of the Sacandaga. Muscles they never thought existed were put to the test! Parents show and tell took place throughout the year in Mrs. Kay’s first grade. The photo below is Mrs. Plummer demonstrating cake decorating. Other parents such as Mrs. Wal- lace Philips brought their year old Karen to class and talked about a baby’s first year. Mrs. Wendy Bosford presented an art demonstration showing the stages from first sketch to the finished framed picture. There was a visit to the Washburn farm to see the turkeys raised by Bobby Joe Baldwin’s grandpa and on and on as many parents par- ticipated. pupils in the grades enjoyed an assembly pre- sented by the Adirondack Highland Dancers. Above: Students learned about the Irish Jig and the Highland Fling under the direction of Mrs. Patti Nesbit. Prior to the assembly the students learned about Scottish dancing in their Music Classes. Forty enthusiastic fourth graders learned how to do some of the dances. BLAST FIELD TRIPS such as the one show on this page students going to the Adirondack Museum have bene- fits in that when the students return they have new perspectives and new ideas to put into use. The result of studying construction of old ca- noes, sheds, housing etc. at the Museum ended up with Mr. Tom Roach’s Wood shop classes making an authentic hand hewed beam Adiron- dack shed (below right.) Mr. Charles Swanson, Educational Director of the Adirondack Museum showed students post and beam construction; an old turn of the century method of building. Gary Bourdeau looks over the wood shed built by classmates. In Wood Shop the students delved also into building for solar energy structures in the Adirondacks. 19 Front row left to right, Shawn Allen (Agnes), Tara Tremaine (Prompter), Lisa Walker (Tootie), Donna Racette holding Seriah Racette (Backstage Seriah was Lady Babbie), second row, standing, Dawn Allen (Agnes), seated, Tammy Hayes (Mrs. Smith), James Hamblin (Mr. Smith), Marilyn Sutliff (Katie), Lynn Winches- ter (Esther), Sarah Smith (Rose); third row, Terri Liebl (Hair Stylist Costumes), Kristin Maletta (Lucille), Ward Philips, (Fred) and Dick Backus (John,) Fourth Row, Mr. Don Racette (Director), Marilee Allen (Backstage), Prudence Young (Mrs. Waughop), John Decker (Conductor Mr. Duffy), Joe Rumpf (Mr. Dodge), Danny Sehlmeyer (lighting) Back Row, Bobby Jensen (Lon) and Guy LaClair (Grandpa) MEET ME INST. LOUIS The school play was presented in the Fall this year and on a Thursday and Friday night rath- er than the usual Friday and Saturday perfor- mances. Attendance was very good both nights and audiences really got into the turn of the century romantic comedy. For Mr. Racette the director it was his 17th major high school show. Mrs. Peggy Quellman, Cheerleader Advisor, put the football team as well as her charges through the paces for keeping all muscles strong. From the energetic “trimnastics” exercises students found muscles that grew muscles! CABLE CHANNEL TEN IS THE BROADCAST VOICE OF HLCS! November 29th was the initial date of television broadcasting in the school. After several years of groundwork Channel 10 on the Cable system serving Lake Luzerne and Corinth and soon to receive same Hadley was opened to the school district. Initial broadcasting was done every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5 to 7 pm. Later evening programming, along with possible daily morning telecasting 7:15 to 8 a.m. was planned when this yearbook went to press. Initial programming consisted of the school play, sports events, the annual bloodmobile, Thanksgiving Christmas celebrations, interviews with various teachers and others, art projects, classroom uniquenesses and more. Mr. Ra- cette was overall director of the tv enterprise with many eager students doing everything from camera work to lighting, graphics, script writing etc. Bloodmobile Chairperson Mr. David Otoupal reported the 1982 Bloodmobile at HLCS on December 1st re- ceived donations of 75 pints of blood. Student Chairper- sons were Claire Wyngaard, Russell Hedger and Faith Shattuck. They made numerous telephone calls along with other student volunteers as well as working on all phases of work the date itself. One of the television specials on Channel 10 consisted of a camera following Mr. Racette as he want station to station to assure viewers giving the gift of life is not painful or something to fear. HIGH SCHOOL BAND AND HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS MIDDLE SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CONCERT WINTER CONCERT Numerous musical groups in grades K-4 and 9-12 performed their annual concert at Christmastime; only a couple of representative shots shown above. As usual the auditorium was filled with appreciative listeners. An impelling assembly for grades 9-12 was introduced by Mr. Stengel. The subject delt with the hazards of drinking and driving. State Trooper Lemery and Lake Luzerne Town Justice George Evens informed students about the dangers of mix- ing the two and a film called “Mechanized Death” was shown. Also during the holiday season Mark Thomas said he need- ed money to buy Christmas gifts and he’d wear what you see below if people would sponsor his effort. People did and he did. STUDENT LIFE has its excitement via the school play, sports, the newly acquired television channel, yearbook, chorus, art, Junior Prom, Band, competing in speaking contests and so much more. However much of each day consists of the news around the locker; the laughing and enjoying the good times over lunch or at the soda machine. Just one to one communication with a teacher to rap or seek additional help, even daydreaming and making plans and setting goals it’s all part of our day to day living at Hadley Luzerne Central School. THE HALLOWED HALLS OF H-L are places to go to put away your books, to wait atop the stairs to walk that “special one” to class, to sit and study when the teacher allows you “outside” the class- room and to lead you to the office for information from time to time. Whether its playing volleyball during a regular gym class period or shooting baskets after lunch, the gymnasium is a popular place to be. Living in the computer age we have students who are learning the basic language of this new technology in classes. They also have access to a computer terminal in the Guidance office to find out all requirements, advantages, and benefits of various types of occupations. Music in the classroom, via band and chorus or in any way makes a day! Most enjoyable of all about our day to day schooling is just bein ! We like each others company, we enjoy the opportunity to learn and to share and just to appreciate our area, our school, our school life! Wade DeMarsh Anthony Geppner Christina Johnson Theordore Rawson Michael Sutliff Jody Walker ADDITIONAL GRADUATES At the beginning of the 1982-83 school year these students did not have enough credits or requirements met to be considered as part of the Senior Class. Nevertheless by taking necessary classes and passing same during the school year, they would be eligible for possible graduation with the class of 1983. Sleepy eyed students boarded the bus by 7 a.m. after a fine breakfast in the school cafeteria. On the way to the Nation’s Capital, the Class stopped at Gettysburg to see the battlefield and tour the museum. Monday morning the students visited the Washington Monument, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials and the National Archives. After lunch there was a ride up “Embassy Row”, a visit to the Washington Zoological Park and a nice dinner in a fancy restaurant. Tuesday the students toured the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, visited the Botanical Gardens and then had the above photo taken. A tour of the Capitol, and the Library of Congress was next. After seeing the Supreme Court Building the students went to the new F.B.I. facilities. The afternoon was spent at the Smithsonian Institue. That night they took a tour of the National Wax Museum. 36 Breakfast on Wednesday October 13th was in Arlington. The students toured the White House and then the Arlington National Cemetary where they witnessed the changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Kennedy gravesites, the Lee Home and the Statue of Iwo Jima. Leaving Washington the students went to the Amish country of Pennsylvania and ate at the famous Plain and Fancy Restaurant. The final day of the trip began with a tour of Lancaster and a stop at Hershey. The excited but tired students reached home about 11 p.m. 37 Patti Duell Valerie Dunkley Stacy Farr Donna Gallese Scott Gignac Timothy Gilbert Harry Gill Victor Grant Melvin Haas James Hamblin Matthew Hayes Janet Jenkins SENIOR PET PEEVE FUTURE AS YOU SEE IT Rupert Baker Seth Baker Barbara Bennett Tracey Bennett Ronald Bordeaux Kim Bovee James Burke Brian Chandler Vicky Chapman Gina Clute Roxanne Clute Aaron Corlew Maggie Daniels Debbie D’Antonio Kris Day Terry Deuel Bill Dingman Patti Duell Valerie Dunkley Stacy Farr Donna Gallese Scott Gignac Tim Gilbert Paul Gill Victor Grant Melvin Joe Haas Jr. James Hamblin Matt Hayes Janet Jenkins Bobby Jensen PET LOVE Anything dealing with the woods Chevies Women Jeff Wails Texas Priscilla Chevy auto Bobby L.A. 56 Chevy My Truck Jimmy Fred Tommy Holly Gina Partying Concerts David Fast Cars Partying at the Rodeo Weekends Mo Matt George Hudson None Mrs. Young ’68 Dodge Girls big tires Mr. Finlayson Old Country Music R.L.S. We find they tell it like it is and often we don’t want to hear it or because of the dictates of acceptable taste can’t print it!!! Nevertheless two years ago we ventured into taking a survey and survived. Last year’s class was afraid to tackle same but this year’s group again did the poll. The results follow. The first question asked was “What is your favorite tv show?” The top three choices MASH, Night Rider, and a tie between Hill Street Blues and Magnum P.I. Since seniors on a Friday night are either at a party or a movie we asked what is their favorite movie. We didn’t dare touch what is their favorite party. Results of the top three films E.T. won by one vote over second place Office and a Gentleman. Third was Porkies. The Yearbook staff noted all three movies had just recently been showing at the time the survey was taken and we wondered if indeed seniors could remember any older movies of the past year let alone other years. Tom Selleck collected the most votes (22) as favorite actor. Clint Eastwood (Mr. Bad Guy) was second and Sylvestor Stallone third. Top actress was Lonnie Anderson. Goldie Hawn was next followed by Jane Fonda. As any parent knows, seniors are always listening to the radio. It isn’t the news reports but the music they want. Top song with the class was “Hard to say I’m Sorry” followed by “Bobby Brown.” The third choice is X rated and not printable. It is nor airable on any radio station. Along with favorite songs, the seniors were asked who their favorite recording group is. Loverboy came out on top followed by Asia and R.E.O. Speedwagon. The top male singer was Rick Springfield. Kenny Rogers who was coming to the Glens Falls Civic Center during November was second and Bruce Springsteen and Ozzy Osbourne tied for third. Pat Benetar with 23 votes was the favorite female singer followed by Joan Jett and Olivia Newton John. Turning to sports the number one favorite is basketball according to the survey. Football and soccer tied for second and Ice Hockey was third. Dave LaPoint, a Glens Falls native making a success in major league baseball was voted the number one athlete. Hold on to your hat, Lyndon Sutliff took second place and Bucky Dent third. The Dallas Cowboys won choice for favorite sports team. The New York Yankees were second and the legendary Pittsburg Steelers third. Having spent 13 years with various teachers while at H-L, the seniors were asked to name their favorites. Mr. Albert Zimmermann was the winner. Mr. Z ranks about the longest ranking teacher in the system. The number two choice was an energetic and personable first year teacher at H-L Mr. Fred Valastro. Mr. John Manley and Mr. Matthew Clark tied for third. As to favorite subject taken, Study Hall was in first place, English was second and Math was third. What no recess??? Students were asked to name a hero in their life. Just as two years ago the seniors weren’t too sure what a hero is this year there was a wide variety of “heros.” Anyway the overall winner was “Father.” Herbie D. was second and Mr. Valastro third! When students were asked what is their favorite activity either in or out of school, not surprising the first choice was “partying.” “Sleeping” and rollerskating tied for second with “Cruising” third. Who says gas is too expensive? What day is your favorite. Of all things on the poll this garnished the most votes. “Friday” is the favorite day with more than half the class. Saturday was the second choice. The favorite vacation spot for the seniors ranked Florida first, Hawaii and Maine tied for second and “anywhere” came in third. Finally the seniors were asked to say a few words about their relationship with their parents. There were almost as many different answers as their are different seniors. Some of the answers included “Always there when I need them,” “I appreciate all they have done over the years,” “Everything is great”, “We have differences but we get along,” They are good most of the time,” no comment,” “They’re cool” “People I respect,” One senior wrote “not too shabby” whatever criterion that is. Most of the seniors indicated they can and do communicate well with them. A senior boy wrote “I get along great with my parents. They are not only my parents, but they are also my friends.” And a senior girl wrote “They drive me crazy but what would I ever do without them?” 45 John Shattuck Hope Spangenburg Christene Skoglund Sarah Smith Kimberly Springer Dianne Stephenson Tina Tardiff Mark Thomas Lyndon Sutliff Maryellen Thorpe Salvatore Trentecoste Laurie Waite Jeffrey Walker Mark Waterhouse Lynn Winchester Michael Wood Bruce Worth Claire Wyngaard Toni Yannaci SENIORS ...
