HI-LIGHTS 1982 Hadley Luzerne Central School Lake Luzerne, New York Presented by the Class of 1982 Yearbook Advisor: Mr. Donald Racette Co-Editors: Barbara Morrissey Jeff Miner DEDICATION MR. JOHN MANLEY It is with pride that the Class of 1982 dedicates this yearbook to you. You have proven to be much more than just the superior math teacher you are ... you have be- come an adult we can turn to to discuss problems of all dimensions and just a nice person with whom we can chat. Your interest in the school and especially in the bet- terment of all students makes you truly a person of high quality. This dedication is our way of saying a very sincere thank you. TABLE OF CONTENTS YEARBOOK STAFF Mr. Donald Racette, Advisor Jeff Miner, Co-Editor Michelle Young, Mike Fazio, Layout-Photos Barb Morrissey, Co-Editor The Class of 1982 had more than 50% of the class cooper- ate in someway with this book; mostly by selling patron and business advertisements. Others were instrumental in sitting in on major decision meetings to decide year- book cover colors, design etc. But the students seen on this page spent many additional hours on page layout, photography, writing and the many aspects of putting the book together. Sergio who is 19 has three brothers and one sister. He and Derk Selter, also an exchange stu- dent, are sponsored by SHARE, a group from California. Sergio says regarding popular music American singers sell as many records in stores in Brazil as Brazi- lian music artists. Of his home country music, however, the Samba is the most popular type. Noting the complete reversal of weather patterns, Sergio points out November through February is summer at his home. Classes in his home school begin in March and end in July. There is just one month of vacation and then a new semester begins in August. Sergio Duarte Portugese, English, and French are languages learned by most Brazilian students. Other high school classes there include Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography and Politics. There are few electives open to students with most taking a set number of courses designated by the government. Soccor, basketball and swimming are the most popular sports in Brazil according to Sergio. Farming is the main means of livlihood in Brazil which consists of 22 states and is divided into three territories. Sergio says most people are either very rich or very poor. He also notes there is a 10-month draft for all young men in Brazil. Derk Selter Derk also is enjoying his stay in the Hadley Luzerne area. He especially likes American television with the exception of too many commercials. His musical selections favor punk and New Wave. He finds it difficult to learn English. Derk however found words to describe his appreciation of the beautiful Adirondacks. Derk likes to play tennis and also enjoys hunting. He has tried four wheeling and as far as food enjoys hambur- gers the best. In terms of television watching which the average citizen spends 5 to 6 hours a day doing, our seniors voted MASH as their favorite show. Soap operas ranked next followed by Monday Night Football and Baseball. STRIPES was the number one ranked movie for the year followed by ARTHUR and CHEECH AND CHONG'S UP IN SMOKE, NICE DREAMS AND NEXT MOVIE. When it comes to favorite songs, none seems to stand out way ahead of the rest. But the song receiving the most votes was Take It On the Run. Other favorites included Keep on Lovin' You, Endless Love, Dirty Deeds, Step by Step, and Godzilla. The R.E.O. Speedwagon was way out in front in terms of favorite musical group followed by AC DC and Styx. Bucky Dent was voted favorite athlete by the class followed by Sugar Ray Leonard, Bjorn Borg, Tony Dorsett and Chris Everett Lloyd. Within the school Mr. Clark received votes as the favorite teacher, just an edge above Mr. Zimmermann. Mrs. St. John and Mr. Otoupal also received numerous votes. The favorite food for the seniors was, you guessed it, pizza. Steak came in second and believe it or not tuna fish, third. The favorite professional team in the poll showed first the Yankees and then the Cowboys and in third the Red Wings. Actors and actresses found Burt Reynolds, Alan Alda and Bill Murray along with Bo Derek, Brooke Shields and Goldie Hawn taking top honors. Back to school Study Hall was voted favorite subject followed by Mathematics and English. Hold on to your hat! Andy Bovee received most votes as a hero. Ronald Reagan was second, Alfonse D'Amato third and Rent-A-Cop fourth. The favorite color for the seniors was blue, followed by red and then purple. (How did we end up with a yellow cover then?) Friday is by far the favorite day of the week for the class. Saturday came in second and there were 2 votes for Wednesday. When it comes to a vacation spot, Florida was the first choice followed by Maine, the reservoir and Hawaii. Behind the Middle School tied with Hawaii. 40 When asked what they like about living in this area the scenery was the best reason tied with partying. Concerning parents seniors said they best liked the fact they care. They also appreciated their parents for understanding and their values. To keep our steady subscribers who have purchased yearbooks up to date, we are beginning our look at activities with what occured the Spring of 1981. We did not publish a supplement to last year's yearbook so our story picks up at this point. To this point you have seen the current classes, the faculty and staff and others. Now lets look at what happens at Hadley Luzerne. Because we have such a supportive community and staff much more happens than we have time to capture on film; but we do have some highlights .. . and so we begin with a look at SPRING 1981 NEW YORK STATE REGENT SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS We are most proud of the scholarship efforts of these stu- dents who last year won the prestige that comes with com- peting with thousands for the relatively few scholarships that are given. From Hadley Lu- zerne we salute these winners Left to right, Lisa Powers, Chris Winchester, John Moorhead, Mr. Leo Stengel, high school principal, Guy DeMarco, Amber Fuge, John Parsons 64 APRIL 3, 1981 was the date for one of several dances sponsored by our very active Student Council. As true with most of the dances held during the year, music was by record with various area radio stations supplying the sounds and special lighting effects. JUNIOR PROM MAY 9, 1981 Donna Gallesse and her date Todd De Marsh Jackie Ellis 1981 King Queen The 1981 court consisted of Joe Ellis, Michelle Young, Jay Ellis, Debbie Mason, Todd DeMarsh, Michelle Gereau, Jackie Ellis, Bill Pike, Terry Liebl, Paul Tubbs, Barbara Morrissey and Mike Gorham. Seated are the 1980 queen and king Robin Marcoux and John Parsons. Fran Mehan Cindy Braman collect tickets at the door CAREER Each Spring, the Guidance Department gathers men and women from various careers in the area. These volunteers come to the school to talk facts with the high school students; to discuss advantage and disadvantages of jobs; pre-requisites for getting into various positions and to answer any questions about numerous jobs. Students usu- ally have a choice of 3 different experts to visit with and learn about professions. ' 'f- ' ■• . DAY SPRING CONCERT 1981 mim DANCE MAY 1, 1981 FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL YEAR SEPTEMBER 9, 1981 HALLOWEEN DRESS UP OCTOBER 30, 1981 PEP RALLY NOVEMBER 6, 1981 DAILY LIFE IN KINDERGARTEN is a time of innocence; of looking ahead to learning all the excitement about living. Learning how to tie a shoe, how to count or know Mr. T is famous for teeth. It is a time when children love coming to school ... an ideal that should be carried throughout all the school years. THE ELEMENTARY GRADES FIRST GRADE .... a time to move to the big school from the portables. Perhaps a feeling of pride as there is more freedom of movement and making of decisions on a basic level. SECOND GRADE is really the third step in the school ladder and at this point we often find the children taking the initiative and getting less shy .. but yet having the love and respect for their teachers that help mold their habit which they will carry through life. THIRD GRADERS are at the stage of girls being sugar and spice and everything nice and boys, well, boys will be boys! FOURTH GRADERS are at the end of their elmentary career. It is an age of exploration, of often rapid advancement in terms of school interest. Student in the elementary do not spend all their time just in the classroom. When they can they visit the media center, the art room, the reading room, or the resource room just to mention a few. Are these special areas of concentrated learning a help. The last photo on the right gives a reply! FIFTH GRADERS are at an age of pranks and fun and just excitement and comradeship in learning together in the classroom. It is a time of enjoyment in school where each day can be a Saturday when the attitudes are right. SIXTH GRADE and the awkward age hits. Not quite what in the old days was called Junior High and not Elementary either .. but alive, and active and well! SEVENTH GRADERS are at the beginning of the final stage of school life. That is, they are learning to experience classes with a variety of subjects; and most often a different teacher handling each class .. . just like they will do for the rest of their school career. No more one room teacher handling all subjects, the 3 r s and so on. Also they learn that studying is a serious matter and that indeed independent study is a must if they are really going to learn. They also now have to face decision making and the use of logic, wise use of time and just plain hard work. EIGHTH GRADE and the end of Middle School . . . but not the end of friendship ... in fact it is the age of trust and true friendship. With high school itself classes cross over all lines. In some classes we find freshmen and sophomores or even freshmen and seniors. Although most of the time seniors are with seniors ... in class or out, there is a general mixture covering 9-12 students. Perhaps that is a uniqueness that makes high school such a challenge, to overcome shyness, to try to gain rapport with one another and to be in with all the people you come in daily contact with. The annual senior trip has been a tradition longer than any of the current senior class have been alive. Our parents have posed where the Senior Class did. It is a time of true comradeship and fun and togetherness that will truly be moments to treasure and remember. It is something that students begin looking forward to as soon as they hit the hallowed halls as ninth graders. The trip has always included Washington but also many other nearby areas. CAN DRIVE A SUCCESS Miss Jeanne Morristell was the Queen of Cans as all high school students competed class against class in bringing in canned goods to be distributed to needy families. Just prior to the Christmas break the cans were laid end to end beginning at Mr. Zimmerman's room and stretched down the hallway. This year the sopho- more class won with the largest number of cans brought into the school. The freshman class was in second place. It was all for a good cause and the cans were later distributed to numerous families in the school district who otherwise would not have had as happy a holiday. LUGE ASSEMBLY December 14 students and teachers took an active part in the year's first paid assembly as two experts who have placed fifth as doubles team in the United States visited the school to talk about the luge event. The luge is a small sled which was one of the Olympic events. During the assembly students learned how to use the sled for opti- mum speed. Joe Haas and Helen Hughes headed up a group of about 12 students who coordinated the annual Bloodmobile drive for the American Red Cross which was held in the gymnasium of the high school. Seventy three pints of blood were collected with only about 5 people turned down from donating for various reasons. About 10 area nurses volunteered their time to help in the drive. 89 ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CONCERT SCHOOL (I,'.', I 1 iS8S8®8 Although the yearbook is distributed in early May, it is completed and mailed to the yearbook company before February. Thus the school play, Seventeenth Sur imer for the 1981-82 school year, the Junior Prom for 1982, the Spring Sports for the 1981-82 school yeai and other Spring activities are not in this edition but hopefully would appear in the 1982-83 book. So many activities take place that even if we had another 100 pages to show, which we don't! ... we couldn't give adequate coverage. Know that as always Hadley Luzerne Central School always has a lot going on ana that innovations in education are the norm not the 94 exception in our hallowed halls. N GIRLS BASKETBALL VARSITY Kneeling, Diane Quirion, Michelle Young, Val Stone, Elaine Lama; Standing, Cathy Page, Linda Keeler, Chris Skoglund, Shelly Baine, Gail Ghent, Chris Vasiliou, Coach Derry Hagadorn Under the able leadership of Coach Hagadorn, the girl's basketball team with spirit and desire plunged into a season of very competitive basketball. As we go to press the season was only underway and regardless of the final outcome, what is important are the fundamentals of team spirit, playing well, and improving that each of the team members attained. 96 GIRLS BASKETBALL JUNIOR VARSITY Learning the tricks of the trade and getting the initial feel of competition falls upon Coach Marconton- jo's charges as the girls in the Junior Varsity learn the basics and put them into competition.
